Serene wall colors certainly evoke calm, but the true pillar of a healthy bedroom is the mattress—one that encourages quality sleep and well-being. In our Zuma Beach House, I looked to Avocado Green Mattress to anchor the bedrooms in our renovation with mattresses that support restorative rest and, ultimately, better health.

Making the bed.

Sleep Matters

As someone who has struggled with insomnia, I take my sleep very seriously. Sleep is a true pillar of health—so much depends on it! Between shutting down my phone hours before bedtime to wearing breathable pajamas, I’ve gotten my wind-down routine on lock. But one of the most critical parts of inducing calm sleep is to reduce the harmful toxins that come into the bedroom.

Made of certified organic materials, including GOLS-certified organic latex and GOTS-certified organic wool and cotton, Avocado’s mattresses are more durable, breathable, and supportive than those made with synthetic materials, says Jessica Hann, Avocado’s Senior Vice President of Brand Marketing and Sustainability. “Polyurethane foams can emit volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, harmful chemicals that can cause respiratory irritation or other health problems,” she adds, pointing out that Avocado avoids chemical flame retardants and adhesives.

While I’ve also been a long-time lover of Avocado’s certified organic pillows and mattress toppers, I’ve really noticed the difference in my sleep quality since switching to an Avocado Green Mattress in my Austin home. We sleep better at night and wake up feeling great, knowing we’ve spent the last eight hours in a bed free of VOCs, formaldehyde, and phthalates.

Bedsheets.

Optimizing Comfort

In addition to its certified organic materials, Avocado makes body support paramount. According to Hann, there are up to 1,438 pocketed support coils made of recycled steel throughout five strategic zones in each mattress, offering pressure-point relief, improved weight distribution, and spinal alignment. Additionally, Avocado’s team members needle-tuft each one by hand at the company’s Los Angeles factory. Such attention to detail proves that comfort and sustainability can co-exist.

Honestly Natural

Today, countless companies claim to deliver a product aligned with nature and wellness. But how can you know? I highly encourage consulting with the GOTS Public Database. If a company is truly organic, the brand and its products will be listed here. Avocado obtained a GREENGUARD Gold certification, which focuses on indoor air quality and low chemical emissions, and the Formaldehyde-Free Claim Verification, “which confirms that our products do not contain formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasing substances,” says Hann.

Because of its integrity and purity, Avocado is an ideal complement to our coastal beach house. Choosing incredibly comfortable beds that support our health and earth is a no-brainer. That’s my kind of luxury.

The post A Professional Organizer’s 4 Best Tips for Your Cleanest Year Ever appeared first on Camille Styles.

At the start of the year, like clockwork, I feel a sudden impulse to get organized. There’s a desire to streamline everything before the madness of work and life take over once again. Plus, there’s something weirdly satisfying about a Kondo-level closet, a carefully edited coffee table, and starting the week meal prepped. But one space that often gets neglected is the one that’s purely for you: the bedroom. So today, we turn to a master of living intentionally, Shira Gill to not only share her top bedroom organization ideas, but how to elevate the start to every day.

An organization expert, lifestyle blogger, and author of two books, Gill transforms the action of getting rid of clutter into an almost meditative act of self-care. Seemingly endless scientific studies have found a correlation between a clean space and productivity (plus: less stress and better sleep). But to the Berkeley, California-based mother, it’s not just about getting rid of stuff, it’s about empowering yourself in your space.

Game-Changing Bedroom Organization Ideas

Before we dive into an exclusive excerpt from Gill’s book, here’s an overview of the bedroom organization ideas that keep our spaces clean—and, in turn, our energy calm.

 • Consider visual and mental clutter. It’s not only what you see, but also how clutter may impact you mentally and even emotionally. Are there piles of papers keeping you from using your desk productively? Sort them out. Do you have tons of unread books stacked up on your nightstand? Select one read you’ll reach for each night. By working through our clutter, we can use our space in a more aligned and productive way.
 • Organize around your routine. Are there pieces of furniture in your bedroom that are part of your everyday? Give them priority. If there are other items that belong to your weekly or monthly routines, they don’t need to be within reach. For example, keep the hamper in your closet, as you likely only do laundry on a weekly basis.
 • Purchase storage furniture. We love stylish and functional pieces. Opt for storage furniture (such as a headboard, under-bed storage, or a mirror) that lets you stow away the clutter for a streamlined space.
 • Create an open closet. You’ve likely seen many style creators showcase their outfits with the help of a portable clothing rack. If you have the space, take their cue and create one of your own. This allows you to lay out all your outfits for the week, so you’re not constantly rifling through your entire closet.

Ahead, discover Gill’s bedroom organization ideas to give your most intimate space the dreamy, mood-lifting atmosphere it deserves. She outlines a few easy habit shifts, as well as five things to banish from your bedroom forever. (Hint: don’t neglect your morning coffee mug.) Prepare to wake up in your own personal sanctuary.

Nightstand bedroom organization ideas.

Tip #1: Don’t Put It Down; Put It Away

I think of clutter simply as delayed action or decision-making. If you have a pile of clean laundry on a chair in your bedroom, it just means you haven’t yet folded it or put it away. If you have a massive stack of dust-covered books on the floor, it just means you forgot to put them back on the bookshelf in the living room. Start noticing when you walk into your home if you dump things on any available surface. Do you empty your bag or pockets? Do you toss and run? Awareness of your current habits is always the first step.

When you enter your bedroom today, pay attention. If you have something in your hands, think twice before you put it down. Practice putting every item you bring into your bedroom back in its designated home instead of dumping or dropping it on any convenient surface. This may sound like a stretch, but once you start getting the hang of this habit, it can feel like a moving meditation. Treating your belongings and your space with respect feels good, and waking up to a space that feels curated and cared for is dreamy.

Tip #2: Put Your Clothes Away

Want to know a secret from the inside? Most people don’t put their clothing away at the end of the day. Putting your clothes away takes about two minutes or less, and I promise it is well worth the effort. This little tidying effort each night will have a massive compound effect. Either you’ll be facing massive piles of clothing when you wake up, or you’ll have a clean and comforting space. Which would you prefer?

Tonight, when you get ready to go to bed, decide which clothes are dirty and which can be put away. I know that many of you have concocted a new category composed of “half-clean, half-dirty clothes” that you’re not sure what to do with. Warning: This kind of gray-area thinking will get you nowhere fast. If an item is clean enough for you to wear again, it’s clean. If it’s visibly dirty or soiled, let’s call it dirty! Deal?

Toss the dirty items into your laundry bin; hang or fold the ones that can be worn again and return them to your dresser or closet. If you have a watch or jewelry or other accessories, make sure to put them back in their designated homes. This seems fairly simple and obvious, but I promise that the payoff will be profound.

Tip #3: Relocate and Reset

Bedrooms do tend to be a magnet for clutter, and it’s not uncommon for bills or mail, magazines, coffee cups, and breakfast dishes to accumulate. Take a few minutes during your day, or before you turn in for bed, to relocate the random items and reset the space to its former glory. Remember the rules and guidelines you created and stick with them. What is your bedroom for? How do you want it to feel? I’m guessing dirty dishes and work papers don’t create the mood you’re going for.

Practice the five-minute relocate shuffle. Grab a bin, box, or basket and load it up with anything that landed in your bedroom and needs to see its way out. Take a few minutes to return bills and mail to your home “office,” dirty dishes to the kitchen sink, etc. This is like a quick reset for your bedroom, and a few minutes a day are all that’s required to prevent an avalanche and a weekend of cleaning and tidying. Do it for your future self!

Airy bedroom organization ideas.

Tip #4: Create Clear Boundaries for Other People’s Stuff

Do you have a partner or spouse, kids or furry friends, or an Italian lover who visits every third Thursday? If other people are frequently dumping stuff in your bedroom, it’s best to create clear and consistent guidelines and rules.

I know this is the part where you want me to tell you how to get other people to change. Believe me, as a control enthusiast myself, I would love nothing more than to provide you with that secret formula. But the truth is that other people generally do what they want . . . even if you ask politely. Even if you remind them. Even if you threaten them or pout or get mad.

The good news? You always get to decide how you want to think, feel, act, and react in any situation, so that’s what we will deal with here.

Create a plan for how you will handle it when other people leave stuff in your bedroom. Write down exactly how you want to react and what actions you want to take. It’s important to think this through from a calm place in advance. Make sure to communicate it in a clear, respectful, and nonthreatening way to the others in your life. Use “if/then” statements. For example, you could say to your kids, “If you leave your belongings in my bedroom, then I will always put them in a pile on your bed because they don’t belong in my space.” Make sure whatever you decide feels good to you and is fueled by a positive emotion—i.e., “I’m excited to create a space that feels good” as opposed to “Anyone who touches my masterpiece is going DOWN!”

5 Things to Banish From the Bedroom

 • Excess Furniture. The bed already takes up most of your prime real estate. If you have random side tables, end tables, stools, or benches, considering relocating them or donating them. Give your bedroom room to breathe, unless you have a huge bedroom and have created some type of suite.
 • Luggage. Unpack immediately when you come home from a trip. Put your things away and then put away your suitcase (in its designated home, of course). Please.
 • Dirty Dishes. One question. Why? Slow down and take a minute to bring your dirty dishes and neglected coffee mugs back to the kitchen. You can earn bonus points by immediately washing them and putting them away.
 • Trash. I’m saying it because it’s more common than you might think. Trash should go in the trash. Not on your nightstand, not under your bed, not on top of your dresser. Not on your bedroom floor! I think we’re on the same page here. Throw your trash away. Do it now. Like, right now.
 • Technology. Ultimately, no matter what else you decide to do, your bedroom needs to be a place where you can rest. Going to bed with a buzz of computers or phones does not a good night’s sleep make. Relocate your computers, phones, tablets, and anything else that prevents you from going to bed and staying asleep.

Any real estate agent will tell you it’s worth investing in your kitchen, but beyond modern appliances and luxe touches (forever dreaming of a warming drawer) creating a beautiful space to serve as the heart of your home will reap intangible rewards. Thankfully, 2024 kitchen decor trends are skewing much warmer and cozier than the bright, white kitchens that have dominated for years. The heart of the home should be a reflection of you.

If you’re planning on making any culinary-adjacent updates (big or small) in the coming year, we’ve tapped a stable of talented designers to discuss the 2024 kitchen decor trends worth investing in.

Featured image from our interview with Kate Arends by Suruchi Avasthi.

Renovations are stressful. We asked the experts so you can remodel with confidence. The following trends—from moody marble to “kitschens”—are well worth the investment.

Statement-Making Marble

“We predict Viola marble will become a popular choice for countertops and backsplashes. The all-white kitchen trend is waning, and we’re seeing an increase in the use of white oak and walnut, cut in a less grainy style.” — Amy Mobley of City Hill Design

Soft Checkered Patterns

“While checkerboard in contrasting color schemes and inverse color palettes were on the rise recently, we’re seeing a more scaled-down version of the traditional marbled checkerboard floor through incorporating a softer color palette in the same tone family that go beyond the traditional black and white.” — Munir Turunc, president of Country Floors

Individualistic Kitchens

“2024 will spell the end of the ‘all white everything, all the time’ trend in kitchens. ‘All white and bright’ has a time and a place, but moving into the New Year we’re going to see a more individualistic take on the kitchen. The kitchen wasn’t always thought to be the place where people considered choice in material or texture or even giving it personality. I guarantee if you walked into 10 different kitchens right now, nine out of 10 would be pretty similar. But, I’m here to tell you—you don’t have to have the same kitchen as your neighbor! Whether boldly stepping out of their comfort zone with a stand-out marble or opting to go moody with dark blue, and grey cabinets—homeowners are wanting to show their true colors through their kitchens, quite literally!” – Lauren Meichtry of Elsie Home

Unique Hardware

“While I will always love black and gold hardware options, the upcoming trend is all about the shift toward more unique hardware options. Personally, I’m drawn to eye-catching textures, such as knurled, reeded, or wooden finishes.” — Shaolin Low of Studio Shaolin

Image of Claire Zinnecker’s kitchen

Organic Kitchens

“Warm wood tones, especially in contemporary or Scandinavian-inspired designs, will be warmly welcomed into kitchens. One of my favorites is using oak wood, as it brings an organic air to the kitchen.” — Shaolin Low of Studio Shaolin

Kitchen Metalwork

“In 2024, I think we’re going to be seeing a lot of metalwork in kitchens. Designers have been loving custom cabinetry and range hoods over the last few years, but I still think we’re still in the early days of this trend. There are so many ways to incorporate metal into a kitchen while still creating a warm and refined space. I can’t wait to watch this design develop!” — Tess Twiehaus of Tess Interiors

Tile X Design, photographed by Alyssa Lee

Y2K Kitchens

“In 2024, we’ll continue to look to the past for future design inspiration, and the Y2k period is no exception. Integrating elements such as metallic finishes (whether through fixtures and accents) or high-gloss ones including reflective tiles and shiny surfaces are also a more modern way of integrating the design elements commonly found in the Y2K period.” — Munir Turunc, president of Country Floors

Bright pink kitchen.

Kitchens With Personality

“When it comes to design, personality is key! That’s why I absolutely adore incorporating pops of color through wallpaper, backsplashes, and playful floor patterns with colorful ranges. This addition is the perfect way to infuse a fun and vibrant touch into any kitchen, making it truly unique and reflective of your individual style.” — Shaolin Low of Studio Shaolin

“Kitschens”

And finally, the good folks at Pinterest have released their 2024 “Pinterest Predicts” home trends, with eclectic kitchens (AKA “Kitschens”) front and center.

“Gen X and Boomers will quirk up their cooking areas with thrifted finds, vintage appliances and eye-jarring pops of paint. No minimalist aesthetic is safe.”

Steal an Expert’s Tips for Designing Your Dream Outdoor Entertaining Space https://camillestyles.com/design/outdoor-entertaining-design/ https://camillestyles.com/design/outdoor-entertaining-design/#respond Tue, 12 Dec 2023 11:30:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=251289 You can never be too ready for summer.

I’m writing to you during the middle of fall (in the northeast, of all places), and there’s one thing on my mind. It’s not what I’m buying my family for Christmas, nor does it involve the sweaters I’ll be stocking in my closet this season. Sure, all of those things live rent-free in my head, but I’m proud to say that I’m more prepped for the summer than I’ve been in years passed. Believe it or not, I’m talking about outdoor entertaining design. And with the temps being in the 40’s in New England, I’m sure you think I’m being a little overzealous. But no, I’m simply ahead of the game.

Let me explain. When I learned that Camille would be lending her expertise to the Living by Design Virtual Showhouse, I knew I needed to steal her tips and approach—asap. The Embello team invited Camille to join a roster of top-tier designers (Bobby Berk and Brigette Romanek, among them) to create a virtual, shoppable experience that highlights innovative, inspiring design.

Woman selecting design products.

To dive in even further, I spoke with Ana Maria Bernal, an Austin-based design consultant for Summer Classics, the brand behind the stunning outdoor furniture that Camille chose for the Showhouse. Today, she’s sharing her game-changing approach to outdoor entertaining design. Because as we all know: you can never be too prepared for warm-weather gatherings.

Any furniture used for an outdoor dining area will have to withstand the elements. What are the best materials with consideration to both functionality and aesthetics?

All materials offered as options in our Summer Classics line are suitable for outdoor. These are a few questions that can determine what is best for our clients:

 • Is your outdoor area covered, screened in, or open?
 • What is your style preference?
 • What is the color scheme of the architectural components, such as paint and flooring, countertops, cabinetry, etc?
Outdoor living room.

For a seamless alfresco dining experience, the furniture should blend cohesively with the surrounding nature. How can buyers get inspired by their environment and select pieces that pair well?

Second to good food and great drink, comfortable furniture is everything when enjoying a wonderful al fresco dinner. When working with families, I like to have them test the furniture to make sure it’s comfortable. If they have a great view of a patio, pool, lake, or golf course, I like to make sure the furniture enhances those features rather than blocking them.

In terms of placement and creating the greatest sense of flow from the home into the outdoors, how should the dining area be positioned?

Space planning is as critical to a space as the furniture you implement. Most outdoor areas tend to mix dining with seating, and many have architectural components that determine the layout.

A good space is easy to navigate, safe if you are carrying trays or other objects, allows for both activities to occur comfortably, and honors the natural surroundings.

Outdoor entertaining space.

How do you approach designating between the dining area and the entertaining areas of the outdoor space?

There are several basic measurements that are good to keep in mind, like giving a 3-foot distance between a dining table and a wall or other objects for easy accessibility. The following questions can be helpful to consider when designing the space:

 • If you are watching TV, how far and how high is the seating from the TV?
 • Do you need or have end tables, side tables, or a fire pit, that needs extra space? These considerations will affect size or degree of inclination of your furniture pieces.
 • Is the lighting reflecting on the TV screen?

The pieces from the Summer Classics collection exude a mid-century modern, California-cool vibe. How can homeowners with more eclectic tastes still incorporate these furnishings into their outdoor dining space?

Although our line is often shown or perceived as cool California, it is actually one of the most versatile outdoor lines I have ever known. From our traditional Provance cast iron pieces to our Majorca neoclassical swivel rockers to our Rustic weave sectionals to our clean line, minimalist Seashore Endura chaises. There is enough variety in style and finishes to create one of a kind spaces for all.

After all, it’s the part of your home you present to the world—like a holiday style thesis statement. To help you nail the art of the chic, festive front porch (and hopefully save you a bit of money), we’ve gathered top-tier inspiration and expert input to guide you on your merry way.

Craving more holiday decor inspo? Take a peek inside Camille’s cozy winter holiday haven. We’re stealing all of her ideas.

6 Front Porch Christmas Decor Ideas For a Festive Exterior

When it comes to front porch Christmas decor ideas, the vibe in 2023 is less is more. And in keeping with our natural, earthy vibe here at Camille Styles, we’ll be opting for an organic and understated approach. From the designers we spoke with—Samantha Stathis-Lynch of Hoboken-based Samantha Ware Designs and Olivia Wahler of Santa Barbara-based Hearth Homes Interiors—it seems we’re all in agreement. This year, we’re all decking the halls with an aesthetic that puts natural elements front and center.

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Ditch Bright Lights for More Natural Holiday Decor

For Samantha Stathis-Lynch, the 2023 festive season is all about “natural holiday decor.”

“Instead of bright lights and figurines, consider lacing your front porch or stoop rail with a mixture of pine, magnolia, and berry garlands,” Stathis-Lynch explains. “Add crushed velvet ribbons in soft sage, greens, and burnt golds for that wow factor.”

Add an Earthy Pop of Color

If you want to go beyond evergreen, consider adding a pop of color. Last year, Camille enlisted Elle Worsham, owner of Gracious Garlands, to craft something unique for her front porch. Worsham’s answer: winterberry. The bright red berry still felt organic and natural, but added a bit more visual interest for a head-turning holiday look.

Mix Metals and Textures

Metallic, gold, velvet, greenery, twinkle lights, lanterns… it can all be in play according to Olivia Wahler of Santa Barbara-based Hearth Homes Interiors.

Get Real

’Tis the season after all. “Real garland, pinecones, and small trees add a very welcoming feel, and they smell amazing as you walk up to the front door,” says Wahler.

Achieve the Effortless Look

“For a simple and effortless front door, match your wreath with your rail by incorporating the same types of greenery, but add dried orange and lemon slices and top it off with a beautiful and floppy bow,” shares Stathis-Lynch.

“If you want to elevate it a step further, use your remaining foliage and add simple swags underneath your windows. You’ll have a show-stopping yet elegant facade where nature’s beauty shines!”

Streamline Your Scene

If you’re dealing with a larger porch or front door, like Camille, it can be difficult to make an impact.

“I’ve found that little knick knacks often get lost,” Styles notes. “But when I can streamline it to just a few elements and go really big with them, that’s what makes the most impact. It’s really about leaning into that scale.”

A Vintage Touch

Craft an old-world feel with antique accents. Inherited some glittery baubles or a stately Nutcracker? Now’s the time to let them shine.

“We love tying vintage brass bells into our wreaths or onto stair rails for a festive flair,” addes Wahler.

Less Is More

In keeping with Styles’ idea to streamline your décor, Wahler warns not to overdo it. “While it can be fun to deck the halls, you don’t want to overwhelm the space,” the designer notes.

Choosing the perfect gift for loved ones, co-workers, and even those trickier recipients on our lists is a challenge we’re always happy to take on. But during a season packed with parties, travel, and baking marathons, presents can become a forgotten priority. In an effort to save you from the dreaded mall dash (looking at you dad), we put together this curated guide of thoughtful, last-minute gift ideas that are sure to be safely tucked beneath the tree come Christmas Eve.

“Last-minute” often connotes rushed, resulting in gifts that seem more like an obligation than a kind, loving gesture. But as someone whose love language includes giving cherished gifts, it was my pleasure and joy to shake the internet upside down and find the best last-minute gift ideas for your down-to-the-wire shopping needs.

Camille Styles Christmas presents.

15 Last-Minute Gift Ideas for the Procrastinator in All of Us

So let’s get to it—these are the foolproof last-minute gift ideas that everyone on your list will love.

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Casa Zuma E-Gift Card

I know gift cards can sometimes seem like a lazy-girl gift. But when it’s from a small business you love to support, the intention is clear. Plus, who doesn’t love a gift that comes with a built-in shopping trip?

Gourmia 2qt Digital Air Fryer

An air fryer is never a bad gift. It can be used for practically any food you could imagine and won’t leave your wallet shedding a tear. And because they’re bound to use it on the reg, it earns prime real estate on the kitchen counter. Minimalists, rejoice.

Casa Zuma Recycled Stemless Wine Glasses

A quality set of wine glasses is the perfect gift for anyone looking to upgrade their kitchen inventory or who may have hosting plans on the horizon. We love their organic shape that adds a nice touch of wabi-sabi to the table. They’re satisfying to hold and safe for the dishwasher. Repeat after me: win-win.

Casa Zuma Linen Apron

We all know an aspiring chef in our lives, and for the kitchen connoisseurs among us, this linen apron is an aesthetic must-have. Both the marine and natural sand colors are equally beautiful for any neutral-themed kitchen.

Sézane Lurex Socks

What’s one gift no one will ever complain about receiving? Comfy socks. Bonus points if they’re as stunning as these ribbed pairs from Sézane. They’re a small touch of French style that anyone will be happy to keep in their dresser (and wear on the reg).

Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 3 Bluetooth Speakers

This is one of the best speakers when it comes to portability and quality of sound. With a 14-hour charge, your backyard barbecue, kayaking trips, or low-key dinner parties will never be without a solid playlist.

Casa Zuma Coffee Ritual Bundle

A true tragedy in any house is running out of coffee just when you need it most. A coffee subscription is an easy way to ensure you’re never lacking caffeine (and it typically ends up being cheaper, too!).

Milo Classic Bag

Everything about this bag is the classy, timeless aesthetic I’m always striving for. As Sézane says, it’s the “pièce de resistance your wardrobe has been waiting for.”

Casa Zuma Handcrafted Wood Salad Bowl

From buttery popcorn to a crunchy table salad, this handcrafted wood bowl is the perfect vessel. With its understated style, it’s sure to blend beautifully with your current kitchen staples. Handmade in Michigan, this bowl is made for sharing good food with great friends.

Figmint 6″ Enameled Cast Iron Skillet

A full-size cast iron skillet is a great staple kitchen item, but a smaller version is an easier entry for those just getting into the art of cast-iron cooking. As someone who passionately loves to send the invite, make dinner for a crowd, and gather people around my table, this was a very fun list to put together. Yes, I basically curated my very own wishlist of all the kitchen and home items I’m coveting. And since we’re on the cusp of holiday party season, it’s the perfect time to get a head start by thoughtfully choosing a few gifts for the hosts in your life.

Here you’ll find gifts that range from small to splurge-y: a bottle of hot honey is a sweet gesture for the host of the annual holiday potluck, whereas a beautiful linen table throw is a gift that will make your mom or bestie feel like the host with the most for years to come. And while you’re sure to get invited back regardless, it’s always a thoughtful gesture to prioritize the hosts in your life on your gift-giving list.

So scroll through and shop the best hostess gifts. Who knows, they might inspire you to host a gathering yourself—yep, they’re that good.

Casa Zuma Linen Table Throw

This is my absolute go-to linen tablecloth for my table, and I love sharing it with my fellow dinner party hosts! Here’s what I love about this throw: it’s casual and adds textural warmth to the table. It’s ethically made in Lithuania. And it’s the right size for any table—since it’s made to reveal the edges of what’s underneath, you can use it on square, round, and rectangular shaped tables.

Casa Zuma Handcrafted Wood Salad Bowl

This beautiful wood salad bowl will be on her dinner table almost every night, filled with whatever greens and veggies are in season topped with a drizzle of quality olive oil. Handmade in Michigan, these are heirloom-quality bowls that are made for sharing good food with great friends. You can choose your own adventure from multiple sizes: the 12″ is sized for 2-4 people, the 17″ is made for larger groups, and the 20″ is made for family-style feasting.

Flamingo Estate Candle in Roma Tomato

This next-level candle is always on my wishlist (since I tend to burn through them faster than I probably should!). With the lush scent of the garden, it celebrates the ripe, supple aroma of heirloom tomatoes—and transports you to a late summer dinner party in a Sicilian garden.

Figmint Granite Molcajete & Pestle

I went down the rabbit hole of Target’s fab new kitchenware line and came up with all kinds of goodies for the home—including this extremely well-priced molcajete. If the host in your life happens to be a taco night lover, she’ll love this much chicer way to make (and serve) her signature guacamole.

Mike’s Hot Honey

When I got my first bottle of Mike’s Hot Honey, I asked you guys on Instagram what I should put it on… and your answers ranged from pizza to ice cream to biscuits. I can attest—it’s outrageously delicious on all, and any good host will love this instant way to level up her recipes.

Casa Zuma Linen Apron

If she spends a lot of time in the kitchen, she’ll want an apron that’s both hardworking and cool enough to wear when the gang’s gathered around the island helping her prep. Our signature Casa Zuma linen apron checks all the boxes. (I should know—I basically live in it.) Oversized front pockets house tongs and towels, and the Japanese-style crossback keeps it simple—no ties or buckles to deal with.

Pottery Barn Artisan Studio Handcrafted Ceramic Serving Bowl

I’m a big believer that you can’t beat the organic beauty of handcrafted ceramics. Each of these bowls is sculpted and painted by hand, ensuring no two are exactly alike. These can hold decor objects like dried flowers or holiday ornaments. They can also stand artfully empty, like a collected and much-loved object.

Dried Autumn Banksia Bunch

Real blooms that never die—it’s the promise of dried flowers. I love the striking, sculptural silhouette of the many banksia branches that I have around my home. This beautiful bunch does the work for her, giving long-lasting color and texture to dried arrangements or displayed simply on their own.

Casa Zuma Large Vintage Wood Board

This one’s for the cheese board queen, the one who always has a spread of delicious bites laid out when guests arrive. Our extra-large cheese boards are collected from across the European countryside. These are true vintage pieces, some dating over 100 years old, so they make a major statement in any well-designed kitchen.

Koala Eco Home Gift Collection

Nothing’s more luxurious than beautifully-scented natural home cleaning supplies (or is it just me?). Made with Australian essential oils, this aromatic set includes a Lemon Myrtle and Mandarin Dish Soap, Multi-Purpose Kitchen Cleaner, and Lemon Scented Eucalyptus and Rosemary Hand Wash.

Wonder Valley Olive Oil

I love a luxurious olive oil, and it’s hard to beat the level of high design and flavor of Wonder Valley. This gift is a quick way for your favorite hostess to elevate her meals through its bright, herbaceous, peppery flavor and delicious dose of polyphenols, the powerful antioxidant associated with longevity of life. And of course, that matte black bottle will look sooo chic on her kitchen counter.

Casa Zuma Sharing Platter

This versatile ceramic serving platter is what I use to dish up the main course nearly every night at dinner—that is, if we haven’t already used it for appetizers. Handmade in Los Angeles LA Clay, it’s perfectly sized for roast chicken and grilled fish. It also happens to make a great platter for warm chocolate chip cookies. This is a really special, one-of-a-kind piece to elevate the everyday.

Old Havana Pitcher

A beautiful pitcher for serving water or iced tea is a hostess gift classic. And this one is really gorgeous, made by artisans in Portugal. The crackle finish brings a rustic, old-world charm to the table.

Cloudy Bouclé Throw Blanket

Pave the way for cozy nights in front of the fire with this luxurious throw blanket—a gift that just about anyone will embrace. Made from soft bouclé with fringed trim detailing, this throw adds texture and softness to her space and looks fab draped over the arm of her comfiest chair.

Seed + Mill Tahini and Halva Set

A creamy, dreamy sampler set with two of favorite things made with organic sesame seeds: halva and tahini. Treat her to the pistachio and sea salt dark chocolate candy, and inspire her to drizzle the tahini over all her recipes for an instant upgrade.

Old World Italian, by Mimi Thorisson

If you haven’t yet encountered the dreamy world of French cookbook author Mimi Thorisson… let me introduce you to your new favorite follow. In her newest cookbook, Mimi explores the beautiful coasts and countrysides of Italy through lavish photos and simple, authentic recipes inspired by the country’s devoted producers and rich food heritage.

Rishi Ceremonial Matcha Set

This girls who know, know: while I love my coffee, matcha is one of the best ways to experience sustained, long-lasting energy. And its preparation becomes a ritual, you boost the benefits of the wellness practice all the more. This gorgeous matcha set is my favorite way to elevate my morning routine. With a matcha bowl, bamboo whisk and scoop, sifter, and guide to preparing matcha that eclipses your coffee shop fave (not to mention high-quality, ceremonial-grade matcha), it’s complete with everything you need to kickstart the healthy habit yourself.

At the start of the spring cleaning season, most of us leap at the chance to clear out our closets, donate unused items, and scrub down those overlooked areas of our homes. But for me, nothing inspires a refresh quite like the coziness of fall. With the chillier temps, we retreat to the warmth of the indoors and curate a touch of hygge at every turn. During these months, we spend more time than ever inside. So why not make it a relaxing and inspiring space to be? Thankfully, Shira Gill has endless tips when it comes to designing an organized home and life.

So many tips, in fact, that she centered her latest book, Organized Living, on this very topic. It’s a personal and intimate deep dive into the world of professional organizers. (One that we have many assumptions about, but know little of.) The interviews, organizing secrets, and 250 pages of visual inspiration are compiled to help you organize a home that supports the rhythms and rituals of your life best. It’s clear that following the success of her debut book, Minimalista, Shira Gill is back—with more inspiration than ever to share.

Shira Gill’s Top Organizing Tips

If you’ve ever found yourself overwhelmed at the thought of organizing, you’re not alone. It’s a truth that Shira knows well—and a narrative she’s trying to change. Rather than leaving the feelings of satisfaction and calm until the final result is reached, she believes that every part of the process can be an opportunity for self-care.

Getting organized, as we’ve learned from the expert in the past, requires a shift in mindset and an overhaul of our habits. Creating the organized home of your dreams isn’t solely about the stuff. Instead, it asks us to approach our spaces with purpose—asking how our homes can be not simply an extension of our lives, but a center point upon which we build our days with intention.

We sat down with Shira to learn more about her latest book and the routines she prioritizes to design an organized home. Be sure to read until the end, where Shira shares an exclusive excerpt detailing the nine habits every professional organizer prioritizes.

Shira Gill

Shira Gill is a globally recognized home-organizing expert, bestselling author, and speaker. Shira is the author of Minimalista and Organized Living, and has been featured in 100+ print and media outlets including Vogue, Dwell, Better Homes & Gardens, House Beautiful, Architectural Digest, Domino, Forbes, Goop, Harper’s Bazaar, HGTV, Today, InStyle, Parents, Real Simple, and The New York Times.

What does an organized home feel and look like for you?

My method of home organizing is about setting up a home that supports your goals and values and cutting the clutter, excess, and distraction that stand in the way.

I believe an organized home is less about achieving a prescribed aesthetic (you do you!), and more about creating more spaciousness, ease, and joy in your life. It’s about owning only things you love, use, and value, and having a designated place for each thing. You’ll know you’ve nailed it when you can find what you need in an instant and spend more time pursuing the things you love and enjoy, and less time sorting through the piles.

I wrote Organized Living to promote my belief that organizing can (and should) look different for everyone. There is no one-size-fits-all way of organizing or being organized, and I knew it would be illuminating to go behind the scenes and showcase the actual homes of my colleagues from around the world – ranging from minimalists to maximalists, zero-wasters, nomads, and everything in between. By featuring 25 organizers, sharing their home tours, and highlighting their tips, tools, and ideas, my intention is both to inspire people to make positive changes in their homes and lives, and to show that not only are there many different paths to get there, but many different versions of what there looks like.

Coffee table - Shira Gill Organized Living tips.

What routines do you maintain throughout the week to stay tidy and organized?

The number one thing I do to maintain a streamlined and organized home is to stop clutter at the front door. This means being as intentional as possible about the things I purchase and reminding myself that anything I buy will be my responsibility to care for, clean, maintain, organize, and eventually dispose of. I always ask myself “is it worth it?” before pulling the trigger on buying a new item for my home, life, or wardrobe.

In addition to managing volume, I integrate simple practices into my day to ensure things stay tidy with minimal effort:

 • Put things away right away when I get home. (Bag on hook, shoes in shoe bin, mail in basket.)
 • Commit to a five-minute tidy before bed to reset the space. This means wiping down counters and tabletops and relocating any household items that have lost their way.
 • Getting shop returns, donations, and borrowed items out the door ASAP!
 • Recycling junk mail and cardboard boxes from packages immediately.
 • My teens are tasked with washing and putting away dishes right after dinner so we wake up to a clean kitchen.
 • Laundry every Sunday. (Everyone folds and puts away their own load.)
Camille Styles organized desk.

What’s the hardest area of your home to keep organized—and how do you do it?

I share a 100-year-old bungalow with my family of four, and we share one tiny bathroom with minimal storage (who’s jealous!). Since storage is at a premium, we reserve the two small bathroom drawers for daily-use items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, face wash, and floss and share a single bodywash, shampoo, and conditioner.

I’ve set up drawer organizers to create clear boundaries within each drawer, so each family member has a (tiny) clearly designated zone for their personal care items. Since we have almost zero storage in our shared bathroom, my teenage girls and I store our makeup, toiletries, and products that don’t fit into the bathroom in our bedrooms. It’s a real challenge, but we’re making it work!

If someone wants an organized home but is feeling overwhelmed, where should they start?

Great news: there is no need to take off weeks of work or halt your life to organize your home and life. I created a tool for my clients who feel overwhelmed called the 15-minute win. Just pick any bite-sized project, set a timer for 15 minutes, roll up your sleeves, and go! It’s best to start with something small like decluttering your junk drawer, clearing off a countertop, or just getting all the trash and receipts out of your daily handbag.

Tiny, incremental changes help create momentum and the confidence to keep plugging away. Little by little adds up to a lot, and the key is just to get started.

Moody bedroom.

We have to imagine you’re not only organized in your home but in your everyday life. What tools or strategies do you use to keep it all running smoothly?

Yes! I apply the same toolkit I use for home organizing to keep my life and career running smoothly. My overall philosophy is anchored in minimalism. Clarify what’s most important and cut the clutter and distraction that stands in the way. In my life, this translates into focusing on one big goal at a time and paring way back on other plans and activities.

I typically have a singular goal for the year (i.e., write a book) and I also like to have smaller goals for each season, both personal and professional. To keep it all in order, I make sure my goals are specific and measurable. Then, I work backwards from the result I want to plan and schedule each necessary step to get there. I schedule research time, phone calls, and focused work time. Everything goes in my Google calendar—social plans, workouts, even things like “buy milk” or “drop of donations.”

My biggest life hack is spending five minutes before bed mapping out the day ahead. I like to jot down all meetings, plans, and to-dos on an index card which I can pop in my bag and use as a “cheat sheet” for my day so nothing gets lost in the shuffle!

Things Organizers Do

Excerpted from Organized Living, by Shira Gill.

Across the board, there were many overlaps in the habits, practices, and philosophies of the professional organizers I interviewed for this book. Read on for a roundup of easy, actionable tips you can employ to organize your home like a pro.

Own Fewer Linens

One of the things that shocked me the most was how minimal most organizers are when it comes to the quantity of linens they own. We’re talking one to two sets per bed max. Owning less means less to launder, fold, and store. If you’re short on storage space, this is a major victory. Ditto for the towels. Toss ’em. And by “toss,” I mean keep your favorites and donate the rest to your local animal shelter or textile recycling center.

Ditch the Packaging

Fast track to making your home look like it was touched by a professional organizer? Ditch the packaging! Get that toilet paper out of its plastic wrap. Remove printer ink from its cardboard packaging. Shop the bulk bins, and pour pantry staples into airtight glass jars. Less is always more when it comes to plastic and cardboard packaging.

Make It a Station

If there’s one thing that is guaranteed to make an organizer giddy, it’s centralizing frequently used items into a dedicated zone or “station.” Think breakfast station, smoothie station, pet station, homework station, work-from-home station—the possibilities are endless

Move It, Shake It

Organizers love to get creative when it comes to redesigning spaces: moving furniture around; repurposing bookshelves, dressers, or credenzas; adding, subtracting, or adjusting shelves; installing wall-mounted or over-the-door solutions. Customize your space to fit your needs.

The Display and Conceal Rule

Organizers love to display items that are lovely to look at, like vases, ceramics, framed photos, plants, and art, on open shelves. We love to conceal utilitarian items, like charging cords, tools, house paint, vitamins, and first-aid supplies, in bins, drawers, or deep storage.

Stylish Storage

Whether repurposing or sourcing new products, the pros like to be highly intentional when it comes to storage vessels. Choose bins, baskets, boxes, and organizers that create a cohesive aesthetic throughout your home and reflect your personal taste and style preferences.

Shop Your Home First

Most pros like to “shop” their client’s homes before hitting the stores. Most people have an assortment of bins, baskets, boxes, pouches, and other vessels that can be repurposed for all sorts of organizing and storage needs. If you do need to fill in some gaps, make sure to shop with a specific list and a plan (note quantities and measurements) before you hit the shops.

Elevate the Most Neglected Spaces

It’s easy to overlook styling in the tucked away areas of your home, like your linen closet or laundry room, but pro organizers take great pride in sprucing up the hidden spaces behind closed doors. Elevate your own utilitarian spaces by adding plants, art, textiles, stick-on patterned wallpaper, or even just a coat of fresh paint. Organizers also love styling closets with design books, candles, and pretty objects found elsewhere in the home. Get creative and give the spaces behind closed doors a little love.

Put Things Away, Right Away

If there’s one habit all organizers can agree on, it’s simply to make it a routine to put things back after use to prevent a massive pileup (and headache) later. A five-minute tidy before bed is another common practice of the pros.

Respect the Physical Boundaries of Your Space

As Ryan from Home + Sort says, “Don’t shop for a mansion if you live in a cottage.” Organizers like to embrace and celebrate the space they have.

The post My Best Bookshelf Styling Tips Ever—Just in Time for Fall appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>
When it comes to decorating the bookshelves in my home, my philosophy could be summed up as—less is more. It’s so easy for open shelves to become catch-alls for all kinds of random tchotchkes and way more books than I actually need to have out on display. We have a lot of built-ins in our home, and I want to genuinely love everything on them rather than blindly following trends or design rules. So, the onset of a new season is always the perfect opportunity to take a fresh approach to my shelves by adding some beautiful new finds—and removing some things in the process!

For today’s shelf restyling session, everything I used is from our partner Target, proving once again that a beautiful home does not have to be expensive or complicated. Read on to see how I transformed my shelves for fall, and shop everything below.

Neutral, Minimal Shelf Styling for Fall

Whenever I redesign my bookshelves to welcome a new season, I take a somewhat minimalist approach to spotlight the items I really love. The more clutter, the more my personal style gets lost in the mix! I want to achieve that feeling of abundance but with less stuff, and for my spaces to feel open, simple, and expansive. That means that every time I add something to my shelves, I also try to take away one item and stash it, donate it, or move it to somewhere else in my home.

Warm Minimalism

A minimalist aesthetic sometimes gets a bad rap as feeling cold or spare—and it absolutely doesn’t have to! My design approach is based on “warm minimalism,” meaning it incorporates lots of texture and materiality to make my home feel cozy. I’ve found that when I have less stuff, I often discover more joy in the things I do have. It’s an approach that doesn’t rely on trends; rather it’s slowly building a collection of pieces that speak to you, being thoughtful about each of your purchases.

how to style a bookshelf, camille's living room shelves, fall decor, target, art

Embrace the Seasons

Your bookshelves are a really great place to transition your home with the seasons, whether you want to make them feel lighter and brighter in the springtime or cozy them up for fall and winter. Today, I’m restyling my shelves for fall, bringing in some darker, moodier tones and lots of texture, while leaning into the minimal neutral color palette I love.

how to style a bookshelf, camille's living room coffee table, fall decor, target, dried flowers
how to style a bookshelf, camille's living room coffee table, fall decor, target

First, Lay It All Out

The first thing I do is take every single item off my shelves. Before we add anything back on, we’re going to lay all of my pieces on the ground or a table so I can see what I want to add back in, what needs to go, and then which new items I want to add to the mix.

how to style a bookshelf, camille's living room shelves, fall decor, target

Then, Move Things Around

I want to reshuffle and try different items together to get a visual sense of which pieces pair well together before I start putting them back on the shelf. Once I’ve got my favorite groupings together, I start adding them to the shelves and experimenting. The key here is to move, arrange, shift, and play with the pieces until you feel good about the arrangement. There are no rules here, just tap into your gut and let your heart lead the way.

If you start second-guessing yourself, one strategy that never lets me down is to step back and take a photo to see it all together. Something about seeing an image gives me a new perspective that shows me those pieces I want to rearrange for the final look.

Create a Focal Point

On at least a couple shelves, use one larger statement object that draws the eye to it. This will anchor the entire scene and give the eye something to hold onto.

how to style a bookshelf, camille's living room coffee table, fall decor, target

Create Interest Through Height and Movement

My biggest tip is to play with varying heights and shapes for balance and asymmetry. If one shelf has a stack of books, on another shelf, you can lean them vertically. Make sure that the shelves next to each other aren’t too matchy. And while you definitely want those bigger statement pieces, you don’t want too many large objects or your shelves can quickly become heavy. The goal is to create lines of movement that keep the eye exploring, instead of becoming stagnant and stopping on just one shelf.

Think Outside the Books

Yes, bookshelves house books, but they’re also a place for decor and expressing your personal style. Wander around your house and collect a sculpture or art piece that you can lean on a shelf. Grab a beautiful ceramic bowl from the kitchen. Pull in a mirror from the bedroom. Get creative and balance form with function by adding items to your shelves for no other purpose than the fact that you love them.

how to style a bookshelf, camille's living room coffee table, fall decor, target

Bring in Natural Materials

We all instinctively respond to the beauty of nature. The sound of the ocean or a river has been proven to change our brain waves’ frequency and put us in a more meditative state. At home, I’m always looking for ways to harness these wellness-boosting cues by choosing pieces for the house that bring the outside in. I usually stick to an earthy color palette, and I incorporate as many natural materials as possible–terra cotta ceramics, woven baskets, and wood furniture create a beautifully textured effect.

When You Think It’s Done—Remove Something!

A little restraint goes a long way to achieve a calming, minimalist aesthetic. It can be tempting to layer on all the family photos, books, and trinkets, but as Coco Chanel always said, ““Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take at least one thing off” and I think the same holds true for your shelves. Don’t overcomplicate it—trust your aesthetic and allow the pieces you most love to really shine. Simple is often best.

how to style a bookshelf, camille's living room shelves, fall decor, target

Let Them Evolve

Embracing the fact that our homes are ever-changing and never “done” relieves the pressure of making everything perfect from day one. I’d rather slowly choose the pieces that speak to me, even if that means leaving a little breathing space on my shelves until I find that just-right vase or piece of art. It’s not about impressing anyone, it’s about connecting with our authentic selves and letting our homes evolve right along with us.

When I first heard the concept behind the Living by Design Virtual Showhouse, I’ll admit—I was equal parts intrigued and confused. But when I fully wrapped my head around the innovative idea and the Embello team invited me to come on board as one of the designers—I jumped on board. Here’s the scoop:

The Living by Design Showhouse is a virtual, interactive and fully shoppable experience that is created to inspire with fresh, original ideas and new products from an incredible roster of brands. Since the house is virtual, there are no practical constraints, meaning designers have free reign to design what’s new and next in home design. I was thrilled to join designers like Bobby Berk and Brigette Romanek, and thankfully I was tasked with a “room” that is right up my alley: the outdoor dining area.

I drew my inspiration for this virtual design from the home’s west coast setting in Brentwood, California. I leaned into materials that reflect the California-meets-Mediterranean aesthetic that I’m always drawn to, using terra cotta, textural stucco, warm wood, and tile throughout the space. And of course, I designed it all to be a space intended for intimate gatherings and bringing people together around a table filled with delicious food. I’m so excited to share the final renderings of this space with you, and be sure to head over to the Living By Design Showhouse site to take the virtual tour of the entire home. And be sure to enter for a chance to win $5,000 to upgrade your own home.

The dining table

The dining table is the heart of this room, so I chose a large farmhouse-style table that’s meant for gathering and will never go out of style.

Setting the table

Of course, I set the table with earthy, casual pieces from Casa Zuma. I skipped the linen tablecloth so the beauty of the wood table could take center stage, but added texture with woven placemats and handmade ceramic dinnerware.

The lounge

There was plenty of space for a casual living area off the dining room, so I designed a cozy lounge that’s centered around a stucco fireplace. Built-in seating and low, lounge-y chairs create a zone for reading, talking, and chilling outside.

The pizza oven

You guys know that if there’s any way possible to add a pizza oven to an outdoor space, I’m gonna go for it! This luxurious version is definitely for my fellow pizza lovers, turning out authentic wood-fired pizzas like an Italian chef. The beautiful tile makes it feel a bit more polished, and concrete counters hold toppings, tools, and fresh herbs for garnish.

If there’s one room in the house that tends to slip into disarray, it’s the bathroom. As one of the most frequented rooms in the house outside of the kitchen, a clean and coordinated bathroom can quickly turn into a disorganized one. It’s for those reasons that many of us are searching for the best tips on how to organize your bathroom.

So, in our desperation to remedy the chaos, we turned to organizing expert and owner of Rachel and CompanyRachel Rosenthal, for tips on how to organize your bathroom. Let me tell you, she’s serious about organization. After law school, Rosenthal gave up the security and stability of a 9 to 5 career to build a professional organizing firm instead. All of us here, plus Rosenthal’s clients, can say with certainty: we’re so glad she did. Take a glimpse at Rosenthal’s Instagram, and you’ll see why.

Ahead, we share her tips for how to organize your bathroom, from the bathroom drawers to the bathroom cabinets and so much more!

Tackle Your Bathroom (Or Any Space) Mentally First

How many times have you said to yourself mid-week I’ll clean out the bathroom this weekend and then come said weekend, you somehow find a million other things to do? The result—nothing gets done. This could go on for weeks, months, years… you get the picture. Want to know why we keep putting it off? Rosenthal says being in the right mindset for organizing is so important before you jump into tackling any space (the bathroom included).

“Getting yourself mentally ready to declutter as well as ready to change your systems is crucial to making any organization project stick,” she tells me. “If you try to conquer a space without the right mindset or motivation you are less likely to maintain the systems in the long run.”

If you’re struggling with the mental side of organization, Rosenthal reminds me that you don’t have to organize room by room. “You don’t have to declutter and organize your whole bathroom in one sitting,” she adds. “You can start small with just a drawer or just the space under your sink. Organizing one small space well will have a much greater impact than organizing a larger space without the right headspace behind it.”

First Things First: Declutter, Declutter, Declutter

Before you do any organizing, Rosenthal urges all of us to declutter first—”it’s the most crucial step.” You need to start by taking everything (yes, everything) out of the space you are organizing and then follow her steps for decluttering below:

1. Take everything out of the space and lay it out in one spot.

2. Do a quick initial sweep of the items to pull out any trash. Think empty toiletries—such as containers of floss or stray cotton balls.

3. Review products for expiration dates. Even in the bathroom, products have expiration dates (especially those miscellaneous medications). Rosenthal uses this guide here for makeup products, but be sure to check the dates on your specific items.

4. Create categories of products and items. This will be slightly different for each person and their routines in the bathroom. Make categories that make sense for you, like hair care, skincare products, medicines, etc.

5. Review categories for duplicates and declutter where possible. Do you really need 12 mascaras? Are you ever going to use that clarifying shampoo that you can’t stand the smell of? Having like with like will allow you to see what you have more easily to be able to part with the items you don’t need.

6. Take notes of the items you need to restock. The organizing and decluttering process is mostly focused on parting with items but can also be a great way to set you up for success down the line by evaluating what essentials you might be running low on and need to pick up at the store.

Create Product Categories to Streamline Your Bathroom Routine

This might be a new concept for many of you reading this, but if you want to streamline your morning and evening bathroom routine, think of your bathroom products in terms of categories. Be sure to keep your bathroom routines in mind when creating them to streamline your mornings or evenings in the bathroom, aka not spending a lot of time searching for the right products.

“This might mean you are categorizing morning routine together and nightly routine together vs. all cleansers in one spot,” says Rosenthal. “Your bathroom routine is personal and your organization of the space should be no different.” Hear, hear.

Invest in Bathroom Storage

Once you have those categories in place, Rosenthal says it’s important to keep them together and organized. Below, she outlines some of her favorite products for organizing bathroom categories.

To organize a drawer:

These deep bins are perfect drawer organizers and create multiple categories within one drawer. Whether your bathroom vanity drawers are deep or shallow, these offer ample sectioning for all of your necessities.

To organize a cabinet:

These multi-purpose bins work great in a cabinet or under the sink space to create definition between different categories.

To organize a shelf:

These pantry bins are wonderful on a shelf. I use these for everything from organizing sunscreen to keeping extra makeup that is not in my daily routine.

When you need storage out on the bathroom counter:

Not all of us are blessed with lots of hidden storage spaces in our bathrooms. These clear stackable drawers and space-saver hair and makeup station are great for creating a system on your counter that looks good enough to stay out all the time.

makeup drawer organization_how to organize your bathroom

So, what about really tiny bathrooms?

If you live in a small apartment like me, then you’ll know the struggle is real. But fear not, Rosenthal has a solution for how to organize your bathroom when it’s small, too. She recommends turntables (like this lazy Susan or this two-tier pick) as fantastic options for small bathrooms. “Turntables allow you to really maximize space efficiently by allowing you to easily access items that would otherwise be hidden in a corner or only accessible by moving a number of other products,” she says. These spaces are great for storing bigger items, such as extra toilet paper and hand towels.

If you don’t have any counter space and limited square footage, then Rosenthal says to go up. “Utilizing height is a great way to maximize storage in any bathroom,” she recommends. “This might mean using a multilevel drawer system under your sink or getting stackable bins on taller shelves to store items you don’t use as often.

bathroom haircare supplies

Separate Your Backstock From Your Day-To-Day Items

If there is one organizational hack Rosenthal wants to stress, it’s to separate your backstock from everyday items to allow your bathroom to function better on a daily basis. “No one wants to run out of toothpaste or be scrambling when you have just a tiny sliver of soap left, but all of those extras can create clutter in your bathroom,” she stresses.

“Backstock can be stored somewhere out the way (a laundry room, linen closet, or even under your bed if you live in a small space). Use bins to keep your backstock contained and organized.” This is also a great way to store first aid products in your bathroom (something we all don’t think we need until we definitely need it).

Rosenthal’s Top 5 Tips for How to Keep Your Bathroom Organized All Year Long

1. Start Labeling

Labeling is key to maintaining an organized space. Having labels on bins, drawers, and cabinets will make it so much easier for you to put items away in the correct spot and continue the systems you put in place.

2. Schedule Monthly Refreshes

Organization is not a one-time event. Having an organized space requires maintenance and refreshes every so often. You don’t have to do a full deep declutter and organization each month but setting aside a little time to do a quick once-over of the space to put everything away and tidy up will help your bathroom from getting out of control.

3. Give Everything a Home

If you start off with everything in your bathroom having a home, you will be much more likely to keep the space clean and organized over time. This means deciding where each category you created during decluttering goes in the space and perhaps investing in some bins or baskets to house those categories.

4. Be Mindful of What You Bring Into the Space

It can be easy to fall back into a disorganized mess if you are not careful with what you bring back into your space. You don’t have to be as ruthless as one in one out, but as you purchase new products, make sure you are thinking through if this can replace something you already have. (And if so, toss that duplicate item.) If not, is there a spot that it will fit within the organization system?

5. Don’t Forget About Laundry

Yesterday’s clothes or today’s dirty towel can be the culprit of a cluttered bathroom. Give yourself a space to pop laundry in the bathroom to keep the space looking neat and tidy.

It’s officially al fresco season, which means that, like many of you, I’m focused on transforming our outdoor space into a cozy retreat that feels like an extension of our home. My own backyard is so central to our family’s everyday life, and we’ve designed it for enjoying the things that capture the essence of summer: laid-back conversations, rosé pours on repeat, and chill vibes on hot nights.

But if you’ve ever designed an outdoor space, you know that costs can add up quickly—from hardscaping to landscaping to adding furniture and décor. Our own backyard has been a 12-year evolution (get caught up here), and our strategy has typically been to tackle one project a year. This “phased out” approach allows us to be more thoughtful with our design, plus it’s more realistic from a budgeting standpoint than trying to do it all at once.

Project 62™ Kaufmann Wood Patio Loveseat in Linen

The outdoor loveseat features a brown woodgrain frame and white cushioned seats and backrests for a stylish yet comfortable experience.

$500

This summer, we set our sights on the big wood deck overlooking our vegetable gardens. Adam and his dad built this deck last summer, and up until this point, it’s been an empty space that’s bursting with possibility. So, to show just how simple and affordable good outdoor design can be, I’m transforming the deck using my favorite finds from today’s partner, Target. There’s no doubt that when it comes to home décor (and most other things in life) Target is where I turn when I want high-quality and chic design—at a great price.

So, let’s dive in. I’ll show you the “before” so you can see the blank slate we were working with. Then, I’m spilling all the details on every beautiful and wallet-friendly find from Target that brought me to the final look. And of course, I’ll share all the affordable backyard design tips I used to get me there. Summer hangs have never felt (or looked) this good.

Make It Cozy and Inviting

Backyard design can be intimidating (and expensive) when you’re looking at the entire space at once. So, let’s break it down. Instead of trying to do it all at once, focus on one section or “room” at a time. Create a cozy nook where you can unwind and make memories on those balmy summer nights. You don’t need perfection around every corner—all it takes is one cozy, well-designed space for memorable summer nights outside.

Threshold™ Modular Coffee & Accent Tables

No need to compromise on style while adding extra space to your patio with the Modular Coffee and Accent Tables from Threshold™. Including two side tables and one coffee table, this set of three wicker tables adds a hint of traditional style to your outdoor space.

$275

Know Your Planting Zone

Potted plants are one of the quickest ways to add lushness to a space. But take it from me, if you want your plants to come back summer after summer, it’s important to know your planting zone. After losing our plants in the Texas freeze, we now only plant hearty plants that come back year after year. Time and money saved? Check. Trust me, it’s so worth the extra planning.

Opt for a mix of potted plants and garden beds to add greenery and vibrant colors. Bonus points if you select low-maintenance varieties that require minimal effort to keep them looking their best.

Opalhouse™ Britanna Oversized Patio Ottoman in Linen

Featuring a rectangular base in a woven, wicker-like construction, this beautiful oversized ottoman creates a welcoming vibe in your outdoor space, and it’s topped with a generously padded cushion that makes it just as comfy as it is stylish.

$200

Choose Multi-Tasking Furniture

Outdoor furniture can be a major investment. One way to maximize your space and budget is to select pieces that can play multiple roles. Tables that act as stools and vice versa are a great place to start. And while you’re at it, consider versatile décor items (like pitchers that double as a vase, citronella candles, etc.) for ultimate functionality.

And remember, outdoor furniture doesn’t have to be limited to traditional chairs and tables. Get creative with seating options to add personality and maximize space. Think cozy floor cushions, hammocks, or even repurposed wooden crates topped with cushions. These alternatives can be budget-friendly and create a relaxed and inviting atmosphere.

target-affordable-backyard-design-camille-styles-10

Know Your Sunny (And Shady) Spots

If you’re planting a vegetable garden, this tip is vital. But it’s also important to consider when you’re setting up a space that’s prime for summer hangs. Shade is ideal for obvious heat protection, but it’ll also prevent sun bleaching and make your furniture last longer. Install an umbrella over your dining area or invest in a retractable awning. You can also create natural shade with strategically placed pergolas, trellises, or even tall plants and trees. Your skin will thank you, and your furniture will last longer, too!

Threshold™ Wood/Iron Outdoor Lantern Candle Holder in Brown

Accent the outside of your home with this Wood/Iron Outdoor Lantern Candleholder from Threshold™. Place a pillar candle inside and keep the decorative candleholder near the entrance door or steps to greet guests with a warm, welcoming glow.

$50

Embrace the Power of Lighting

Lighting sets the mood and adds enchantment (and utility) to your outdoor space. Hang string lights or lanterns above your dining area for a cozy ambiance. Consider solar-powered pathway lights to illuminate your garden and create a magical nighttime experience. Don’t forget candles—they provide a warm and intimate glow for those memorable summer evenings.

Lighting is the finishing touch that makes a major impact. Whether you opt for café lights or candles and lanterns, create a magical glow that lights up the space after sunset.

Give Outdoor Spaces the Indoor Treatment

Don’t stop at large furniture items when decking out your outdoor space. A few easy décor touches go a long way in making the backyard feel as inviting as your living room. All-weather pillows, throws, and rugs add texture and color—and are the quickest way to transform your patio into a cozy sanctuary. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns and textures to create a visually appealing and inviting space.

Remember, designing your backyard should be a fun and creative process. With a little planning and some affordable furniture finds, you can create a stunning outdoor retreat that reflects your style and enhances your summer experience. It’s all about creating a cozy haven where you can unwind and enjoy the season to the fullest. You got this!

Wallpaper has always held design currency. In my years covering aesthetics and poring over people’s houses in architectural magazines, I’ve found the homes with the most regal touches and confidence to have modern wallpaper finishes. This décor staple has deep roots.

It also has transformative power. When I reached out to corral wallpaper insights and expertise, I was surprised by designers’ eagerness to share how they’re incorporating modern wallpaper into their current projects—from bedrooms to billiards rooms to kids’ rooms and beyond. Their following forecasts, tips, and predictions prove: Wallpaper continues to reign.

12 Designer Tips for Decorating With Modern Wallpaper

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

#1: Look to Large-Scale Natural Landscapes

“These patterns really allow our clients to feel surrounded by nature even when inside,” shares Jennifer Morrison of Morrison Design House. “Natural landscape wallpaper also stays a bit more timeless rather than bright graphics or patterns that might fall in and out of style.”

#2: Seek Quality

“Nothing beats handcrafted wallpaper,” says Hayley English of Hayley English Interiors. “Think block printing or roller methods. The texture is breathtaking in person.”

#3: Consider Guests’ Enjoyment

“Traditionally, public spaces in a home include those that are enjoyed not only by homeowners but also by family and friends, while private spaces, such as the office, are rarely seen by others,” explains English. “If you’re willing to splurge on wallpaper, we suggest installing it in a public space of your home.”

#4: Go for Fun

“We are using textured wallpaper and abstract and floral designs that bring a fun element to a space,” shares Sara Malek Barney of BANDD/DESIGN. “To incorporate these looks at home, start by selecting a room that could use a visual lift or a new focal point. Consider the existing color scheme and furnishings in the space to choose a wallpaper that complements the overall aesthetic.”

#5: Wallpaper the Kids’ Rooms

In children’s spaces, I love incorporating a mural via the ceiling or a wall to add a unique eye-catching moment,” says Jasmine Crockett, founder of JoyMeetsHome. “I love a mix of textured wallpapers and murals.”

#6: Create a Statement Wall

“If budget is a concern and the architecture feels right, one wall of wallpaper surrounded by a coordinating paint color can sometimes be just as effective,” suggests Morrison.

#7: Go Geometric

“We are currently partial to using wallpapers with subtle geometric patterns,” says Cameron Johnson, founder & CEO of Nickson Living. “Subtle geometric patterns softly say ‘hi’ to their observers versus scream ‘look at me.’ The wallpapers often have solid colored backdrops with textured feels that allow them to be used in any room.”

#8: Lean Into Moody and Textured

“I am currently working on a billiards room and am loving textured wallpapers,” shares Abby Gruman of Abby Leigh Designs. “Velvet and lacquer! Dark and moody is the vibe of this space.”

#9: Don’t Shy From Maximalism

“We can’t help but lean into moody maximalist-inspired prints,” says Katie Browning in tandem with Heather Lucas, both of Lucas Browning Designs. “This dramatic look is perfect specifically for powder rooms by instantly elevating the tone of the space and allowing you to make a bold choice in a small space.”

#10: Give Love to Windowless Walls

“Wallpaper can be great in rooms with large walls that do not have openings or windows—such as the bed wall in a bedroom, the couch wall in a living room, the only wall in a dining room, or one side of a hallway,” adds Johnson. “These walls are typically hard to carry with a single piece of artwork and make great candidates for wallpaper.”

This bright botanical prints is one of Katie Browning and Heather Lucas’ favorites.

#11: Non-Committal? Go for Stickers

“A lot of companies make peel-and-stick wallpapers. If the budget is tight, you can use these and get the same look,” says Gruman. “Decals are also great for children’s rooms.”

#12: Just Play!

“I encourage anyone interested in wallpaper to just play!” exclaims Jill Elliott of Color Kind Studio. “Order swatches of your favorite patterns and live with them in your space for a bit […] It’s such a great way to set the tone for the home!”

As a design lover with a passion for breathing new life into every space, I’ve learned this truth time and again: high-quality materials matter. The function, aesthetic beauty, and utilitarian ease they offer a home is absolutely game changing. And for more than a decade, I’ve used Caesarstone countertops in every one of my design projects. Below, I’m sharing more on why I continue to look to the quartz countertop pioneer.

A Beautiful Workhouse

In considering a home’s functionality, the countertops are the quiet heroes. Think of our daily acts, from meal prep to sipping coffee. It’s the foundational slabs that provide the canvas for whatever our time in the kitchen brings. Even more so, I see countertops as the key that brings a kitchen together—which is why it was one of the first decisions I made at the start of my Malibu home renovation.

Whether you choose a simple countertop that blends into the environment or one that makes a bold statement, it’s an element that impacts not only the look of the kitchen but also how you live day-to-day.

Superior Strength

It was these reasons—durability, aesthetics, and reliability—that led me to choose Caesarstone for my coastal California home. Caesarstone pioneered the Quartz surface more than 30 years ago. In the decades following, the company’s countertops, which more recently also include innovative porcelain, have caught the attention of countless design minds for their luxurious look and ability to last a lifetime.

“Not only are these surfaces design-forward with robust patterns with rich colors, but their superior strength also sets them apart,” says Lori Shapiro, Public Relations Manager for Caesarstone North America.

Honoring the Earth

With every decision I’ve made for the Malibu renovation, sustainability has been top of mind. How do this product and its maker consider the earth and all stakeholders? This question is at Caesarstone’s core. “It all starts with the earth’s raw minerals and keeping a focus on human responsibility,” says Shapiro.

“The journey begins with responsible sourcing to maximize our sustainable footprint. Then, throughout the production process, we make sure our factories meet strict environmental guidelines and recycling practices.”

Extending this ethos is the element of beauty. As I’ve honed in on all materials for my Malibu renovation, I’ve looked to tones and colors that complement the surrounding landscape. And Caesarstone’s wide assortment of calming, neutral hues works perfectly within my overall palette.

My Top Caesarstone Picks

As I considered various samples from Caesarstone, I laid them out next to other materials I’ll be incorporating into my home to see how each element plays against the others. Caesarstone’s Topus Concrete, a warm greige quartz, is the frontrunner, which complements the organic woods with concrete elements throughout the rest of the space. I love the movement and variation that gives this stone a very high design look.

The enduring beauty and strength of these countertops will undoubtedly provide an anchor in this house for all that’s to come.

Whether it’s a pristine white blouse, a pair of fresh white jeans, or luxurious white linens, there is an undeniably captivating allure to a flawlessly clean white ensemble. But let’s be honest, after a few washes, most garments can start to develop that dreaded grayish tinge. So if you’re like me, you must be wondering: how to keep white clothes white. It should be easy, right?

From my experience, not so much. When you add two toddlers to the equation, you can only imagine how much more challenging it becomes to keep white things clean. Any moms out there who can relate? It’s so difficult that many of my friends laugh at the idea of having white clothing or bedding during the parenting years.

Well, I’m here to assure you that it is possible. With Memorial Day behind us and the unofficial start of summer underway, I’m ready to share my secrets for maintaining that ethereal brightness without resorting to harsh chemicals that harm both our clothes and the environment. Let’s dive in.

How to Keep White Clothes White: Experts Share Their Tips

I like to refer to the laundry room as my office, and I take pride in excelling at one of my main mom duties. Because everyone in my family has sensitive, allergic skin, I have switched to non-toxic products to tackle the uphill battle of laundry.

Conventional laundry products often contain allergens and irritants that can trigger skin sensitivities, allergies, and dermatitis. By switching to non-toxic alternatives, we prioritize the health and well-being of our loved ones while still getting clean clothes. However, it’s important to note that non-toxic products may not always perform as effectively as their chemical-laden counterparts.

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Oxygen Booster > Bleach

When it comes to knowing how to keep white clothes white, my expertise only goes so far. For insights, I enlisted the help of some laundry experts. Corinna Williams, Co-CEO of Celsious, chimes in.

“The best way to keep whites bright without the use of harsh chemicals like chlorine bleach is to use an oxygen booster like our Supersalt consistently. I like to add a tablespoon of the powder, along with detergent or laundry powder, to each load of whites to prevent discoloration.

“For items that need immediate brightening, an overnight soak before machine washing can do the trick. Simply dissolve half a tablespoon of the oxygen booster in a bucket or sink of warm water and let your laundry soak to eliminate any greying or yellowing.”

Don’t Overlook Your Dish Soap

Some other fantastic tips come from the co-founders of L’Avant Collective, Lindsay Droz and Kristi Lord. The experts recommend a household favorite that could be your secret laundry weapon. “You can also use our high-performing dish soap to pre-treat stains. Additionally, it’s helpful always to carry a pocket-size stain treatment when you’re on the go. We carry our plant-based cleaning wipes with us everywhere for cleaning up small stains and even accidental makeup smudges on our collars.”

The Final Word on Bleach

Now, onto the million-dollar question: is bleach ever the solution to maintaining the whiteness of clothing and linens? According to Droz and Lord, it’s not recommended unless absolutely necessary. “Unless you need to disinfect, we do not recommend using bleach for your laundry. Continued use of bleach can deteriorate the fibers of your clothes over time, and natural cotton fibers are not naturally white. Cotton is dyed that bright white. When bleach is added, there is a risk of bleaching away the dye and bringing out the yellow tone of the natural cotton fibers.”

Achieving and maintaining impeccably white garments is not only about aesthetics but also an expression of our commitment to sustainable living. By embracing non-toxic products and the power of oxygen boosters, we can preserve the timeless elegance of our whites without compromising our eco-conscious values.

I can’t wait to see you all in your bright summer whites!

In the journey of designing our homes, it’s easy to overlook the beauty of those small, utilitarian features that bring a space together. These are the hardworking pieces, humble in size but brilliant in execution, that bring function and flow to everyday life. Paying careful attention to such design nuances includes choosing door handles that fit my aesthetic and needs—which is why I worked with lauded door hardware brand Emtek when designing our Malibu home.

How I’m Approaching Hardware in My Malibu Home

Our Emtek hardware makes for a “touch point” that brings consistency and essence throughout the home. This interconnection is a goal of the brand. Door and even cabinet hardware is something you touch more than most other things in your home—it should be something you love interacting with and using.

Spotlighting the beauty in the day-to-day is one of the most enjoyable aspects of what I do. No detail goes unnoticed in my world, particularly when it comes to home design. I viewed the handles, knobs, and pulls in the Emtek collection as essential pieces that will elevate even the simplest moments in my Malibu home.

Here, I’ll break down the beautiful functionality behind her design decisions. For Sunset’s next Idea House, good design is in the details. Here’s how I’m using Emtek door hardware to elevate the everyday!

Elevated Function

Door handles are like that perfect, subtle piece of jewelry you wear every day, adding a certain something that you might not be able to instantly put your finger on. Just as your favorite gold bracelet can make an outfit, the right door handles can add the finishing touch that pulls a home together.

Vivid Variety

Emtek offers seemingly endless options to allow customers to create tailored hardware looks for their homes. Biller Switzer highlights a few of the many ways hardware comes into play. An Emtek door-knob can complement the polished nickel of a bathroom faucet. Or a glass knob can elevate a room, same as a sleek Satin Brass lever. “You can select your preferred rosette or back plate style, your favorite knob or lever style, and each in any combination of finishes you like,” adds Biller Switzer.

The Personal Touch

For our Malibu home, I chose the Lariat Lever with #6 Bronze Rosette in the medium bronze patina finish, a part of Emtek’s Rustic Modern series.

A slightly beveled rosette and lever with a contemporary profile, the #6 Bronze Rosette Medium Bronze Patina is meant to be a “living finish” where the bronze will gracefully age over time. I’m drawn to the juxtaposition between modern, clean lines, and timeless materials—and these have both. We’re using other living finishes, like unlacquered brass, throughout the house, so the patina that these will develop over the years will lend the same, soulful quality.

Investing in a product that feels intentional and solid, particularly one that works tirelessly, can make a world of difference in a home’s overall aesthetic. Our Emtek hardware is neither loud nor brash but lends quiet confidence and beauty. It all makes a quiet statement that feels aligned with the rest of our home’s design.
