One thing our editorial team shares in common: we’re obsessed with morning routines (hence our dedicated Wake Up Call series.) A morning ritual is grounding, helping to center yourself before the busyness of the day ahead. But a nighttime routine can be harder to curate, as this is the part of your day when you’re likely the least energetic—and therefore unlikely to commit to a 12-step skincare ritual. Because really, when all you want to do is go to bed, is it worth it to layer on your overnight skincare products?

Turns out, the answer is yes. We all know that sleeping in your makeup is the biggest skincare faux pas, but some nights, you can barely manage more than a makeup wipe. Well… you might be sabotaging your skin more than you think. Your overnight skincare products take advantage of your skin’s prime repair hours, concentrating their effectiveness. By curating an effective nighttime routine—which can be as short or long as you need—you can supercharge your skincare. And create a ritual you’ll be just as excited for as your morning matcha.

How do overnight skincare products work?

Everyone loves talking about biohacking—the current wellness trend du jour. From cold plunges to cycle syncing, optimizing your health is no longer just for billionaires or bros. I’ve started thinking of my nighttime skincare routine as beauty biohacking. By aligning your overnight skincare products with your goals, you can take advantage of your skin’s nighttime healing process.

For further insights into the topic, I spoke with Agatha Relota Luczo, founder & CEO of Furtuna Skin. Ahead, we discuss how overnight skincare products work and how to make the most of your beauty sleep.

“A comprehensive nighttime routine is just as important as a daytime skincare routine,” says Luczo. “You need both to achieve every type of skincare goal, whether that’s preventing breakouts, slowing down the aging process, or achieving a healthy glow.”

Keep reading for Luczo’s expert insights into using overnight skincare products to wake up with your best-ever skin.

Overnight Versus Morning Skincare

Just like our bodies, our skin has its own 24-hour biological clock ruled by the earth’s day and night cycles called the skin circadian rhythm. The skin’s circadian rhythm regulates dermal functions, so it’s important that your daytime and nighttime skincare is in sync with these functions. If not, the skin’s biological clock is disrupted, causing dehydration, breakouts, diminished radiance, and more pronounced dark spots, lines, wrinkles, and sagging.

What should a nighttime skincare routine consist of?

During the day, our skin enters “protect mode.” As the skin fights environmental stressors like sun radiation and air pollution, it thickens to prevent moisture loss and elevates its acid mantle, protecting it from bacteria and inflammation. In the morning, you want to apply antioxidants like vitamin C and niacinamide to boost the skin’s defenses.

At night, when our skin is in “repair mode,” it naturally increases cell turnover to rid itself of toxins. This decreases the layer of natural oils and causes moisture loss, so look for products made with ingredients to help stimulate turnover and replenish moisture.

How to Perfect Your Overnight Skincare Routine

1. Start With a Clean Slate

In terms of where to start, focus on cleansing the skin and getting rid of all impurities without depleting the skin of its natural oils. For this step, I love a cleansing balm, which is an oil-based cleanser that has more of a solid consistency that breaks down makeup but also helps with cleaning away dirt, sunscreen, and other products from the day.

Furtuna Skin Cleansing Oil Balm

“Our Cleansing Oil Balm provides a comforting double cleanse in one wash: olive oil dissolves makeup, sunscreen, and debris, while olive leaf water provides a second level of cleansing by rinsing away water-soluble particles, such as dirt, dead skin, and pollution. It also contains olive squalane—a nutrient-rich emollient oil that helps boost hydration, seal moisture, and alleviate dryness to leave the complexion glowing and rejuvenated with no greasy finish.” — Agatha Relota Luczo

Dew Dream Hydrating Cleansing Balm

This gel-to-oil cleanser contains nourishing ingredients to feed your skin as it cleans debris.

Overnight Skincare Products for Uneven Texture and Hyperpigmentation

To tackle texture and pigmentation, I love using an exfoliator at night. Historically, we as consumers have had to choose between chemical or physical exfoliants when what’s really needed is a multifaceted product that targets the skin’s complex layers. I love how it lets my moisturizer absorb better, so I can truly reap the benefits of the powerful active ingredients while my skin is repairing itself at night.

Indie Lee AHA Exfoliating Solution

This blend of exfoliants includes lactic acid, glycolic acid, and prickly pear to sweep off dead skin cells overnight.

Mara Plankton + PHA™ Flower Acid Algae Serum

This 3-in-1 resurfacing serum uses lactic acid, three bioactive flower acids, and PHAs to brighten and stimulate cell renewal overnight.

Mandelic Clearing Serum

This gentle mandelic acid serum helps treat everything from pigmentation to active acne while nourishing your skin with hyaluronic acid.

Overnight Skincare Products for Fine Lines

To help with turnover and improve fine lines and texture, I turn to bakuchiol, also known as nature’s retinol. Bakuchiol is generally more tolerable than retinol or tretinoin, so you are less likely to experience side effects like redness or flaking.

0.3% Retinol + 2% Bakuchiol Treatment

This unique serum combines bakuchiol and retinol to strengthen skin without increasing irritation.

iS Clinical Retinol + Emulsion .03

Retinol is combined with botanical ingredients like antioxidant-rich vitamin C to smooth and brighten while protecting against free radicals.

Shani Darden Retinol Reform

From celebrity esthetician Shani Darden, this serum combines retinol with lactic acid to smooth fine lines.

Overnight Skincare Products for Dry Skin

Whenever I’m feeling particularly dry, I apply an occlusive balm as the final step in my skincare routine at night, especially during the winter or after a long day in the sun. It creates a cocoon-like environment for the skin to repair itself by preventing water loss.

Furtuna Skin Replenishing Balm

“Our Replenishing Balm gently envelops the skin in a protective, occlusive layer of sound bath-infused extra-virgin olive oil and a unique combination of medicinal herbs that have been used for centuries to heal and rejuvenate suffering or prematurely aging skin.” — Agatha Relota Luczo

COSRX Ultimate Nourishing Rice Overnight Spa Mask

This lightweight mask can be used as a moisturizer or overnight sleeping mask. Rice extract moisturizes while niacinamide brightens and arginine stimulates collagen production.

PCA Skin Hyaluronic Acid Overnight Mask

Slug your skin with hyaluronic acid for overnight hydration without clogging your pores.

More Overnight Skin-Boosting Products

I’m a huge fan of facial massage. It helps release the day’s tension in my facial muscles and assists in the lymphatic draining process. Over time, facial massage can help rebuild the elastin and collagen in our connective tissue. Increasing blood flow, especially when I can’t get in a workout, is a daily priority for me.

I alternate between using our Gua Sha and Jillian Dempsey’s gold-plated vibrating bar. I also recommend using a Canopy humidifier in the bedroom overnight in dry weather to decrease the amount of transepidermal water loss.

Furtuna Skin Gua Sha

Craving a natural contour? Gua shas promote blood flow, lymphatic drainage, and mindfulness while sculpting your face.

Jilian Dempsey Gold Bar

This 24K gold vibrating bar promotes facial toning and natural contouring through intense facial massage.

Bedside Humidifier

A humidifier isn’t just for when you’re sick. This aesthetically pleasing humidifier keeps your skin dewy and glowing.

The year is 2020. You haven’t showered in +/- three days. You’re wearing the same sweatpants you slept in. That top knot is still holding strong and the Amazon boxes full of cozy socks, craft kits, and elderberry gummies are collecting on your doorstep. You feed your sourdough starter, eat a slice of banana bread, and hop on Zoom for your morning meetings.

Perhaps that paragraph should have come with a trigger warning. But isn’t it great to know how far we’ve come?! We went HARD with the sweats and swung the pendulum over to donning black-tie gowns in grocery stores just to feel something. Then, we found a new work-from-home rhythm as many of us stayed remote or hybrid. Now in the year 2024, we wear sweatpants when we want to, thankyouverymuch. And for the most part, we get dressed. Still, no matter which way we get the job done, we all face the same question every morning. What am I going to wear?

Woman working at desk in comfortable work from home clothes.

I can help you with that. I’ve worked fully from home for five-plus years before moving to the hybrid model two years ago. As a “professional” WFH-er I’ve collected a few rules and standards for work-from-home clothes. Let’s review.

The Rules of Work-From-Home Clothes

 1. No Hard Pants. There must be room for easy movement and therefore this COVID-era rule remains. Urban Dictionary defines hard pants to perfection: “Pants that don’t have a stretchy, elastic waistband. During any pandemic, the desire to wear only elastic waistband pants instead of pants like jeans. During the pandemic, Victoria refused to wear hard pants.
 2. Wear Easy Layers. The thermostat does not care that you set it to the same temperature every single day. It will always be colder in one room and warmer in the next. Layers are key for comfort.
 3. Clothes Must Be Versatile. Your clothes need to take you seamlessly from Zooms to coffee dates to errands to lunches. From sitting to standing and sitting again. A solid collection of basics mixed with fun items makes for a closet full of options.
 4. Opt For Casual Yet Professional. This one should be pretty obvious—no need to wear a pair of heels down the hall to your home office—but we can also try a smidge harder than three-day-old pants.
 5. Clothes Should Make You Feel Like You. It’s at the bottom of this list but consider it rule number one.

Work-From-Home Clothes IRL

Everlane trousers work from home outfit

I have a few essentials that I’ll recommend, all of which check off all the rules. I still LOVE my nap dress, for example, and I’m obsessed with these tailored pants. But there is a particular pair of pants I see on just about every WFH outfit list that I had to go try for myself.

I went to the store to try them on and… yeah. They were not as dreamy (pun intended) on my particular body as I hoped they’d be. However, I did discover these incredibly comfortable and versatile trousers (above!) that I immediately loved. They only had petite in the store so I’m planning on ordering the 32″ inseams, but I also don’t totally mind the shorter length. (I’m 5’8″ for reference.)

Work-From-Home and Office Capsule Collection

Behold the ultimate collection of work-from-home clothes for the modern gal. I gathered my personal favorites alongside some everyday essentials, then polled my very fashionable and amazing colleagues via Slack to share any pieces they swear by. I’d first encourage you to shop your own closet for items in these particular categories and then decide what’s missing. (P.S. Don’t sleep on a red power dress. In a sea of neutrals sometimes you need to opt for something fiery and strong!)

Check out the entire collection below and scroll on for three great outfits to get you started.

Outfit 4: The Day You Go From Home to Happy Hour

Soft Lounge Slip Dress / Sézane Max Shirt / Chuck Taylor All Star Classic

Scoop-Neck Rib-Knit First Layer Tank Top

I have this tank in black and white and truly, I could build an entire wardrobe around these two pieces. The fit is snug but cozy and the soft fabric holds up over several washes. However, I’ve learned that my basics take the most heat when it comes to spills and stains. This price point makes it easy to grab a new one when those days inevitably come.

Pima Boxy Crew

My Buck Mason tees are some of the hardest working pieces in my closet because I just can’t stop wearing them. I love this boxy fit that’s sporty and feminine at the same time.

Valencia Blouse

I’ve had my eye on this blouse for years and I finally own her for myself. It instantly elevates a pair of worn-in jeans—so chic and yet so comfortable. UGH, j’adore.

Max Shirt

You might call this classic button-up the Camille Styles office uniform. As Camille quipped on set just last week, “I could literally wear this shirt every day.”

Valerio Jacket

We’re still rocking blazers but lately, it’s the chic cardigan jacket that brings an outfit together in a snap. (And it’s a bit cozier for WFH wear.)

Unisex Oversized Crew

The oversized sweatshirt is a must for those days when you’re craving cozy productivity.

Kara Wrap Cardigan

It’s a blanket disguised as clothes, what more do you need?

Soft Lounge Slip Dress

The Internet-famous dress is just as soft and comfortable as it claims to be.

The Scarlet Dress

Take it from me, a Christy Dawn dress doesn’t go out of style. Expect this to take a starring role in your wardrobe for years to come.

The Easy Pant

It’s all in the name. Comfortable, easy to pull on, and look great with a tee, or a button-up, or a cardigan…

High-Waist Airlift Leggings

IYKYK. The only black leggings, as far as we’re concerned.

The Way-High® Drape Pant

The aforementioned pants, these trousers are easy to dress up with a blouse and a flat after working from home in a tee and sneakers.

Lounge Waffle Mockneck Top

The lounge set is the essential piece of a WFH-er. This top has matching pants (and honestly, all A&F’s loungewear is on point these days).

Grove Short Sleeve Field Suit

Yes, Barbiecore is out, but if Greta Gerwig can rock this exact jumpsuit on set day after day then you better believe it belongs in a solid working-girl wardrobe well beyond trends.

Villa Jogger

These are joggers you can wear outside the house and no one will even know you’ve lived in them for two days straight.

Tencel Jersey Fit and Flare Dress

I’m of the opinion that the right dress is more comfortable than any sweat suit you throw at me. This dress proves me right.

The Ellie Nap Dress

Speaking of comfortable dresses, this one was literally (okay, kind of literally) made for napping. I’ve had one for three years and it’s the easiest choice when I can’t put any effort into what to wear.

Adelaide Sweater Set

It’s a sweat suit, but it’s elevated. You’ll be more productive because it’s cute. It’s science!

New Balance 574 Core

A pair of New Balance sneakers belongs is any collection for the sheer comfort. They look good with leggings, trousers, and dresses alike.

Minnetonka Chesney Slippers

Avoid those cold floors AND putting on Big Girl shoes. We’re in our slipper era.

Chuck Taylor All Star Classics

White sneakers for under $100? Done.

Why are we so drawn to the idea of a detox? From digital detoxes to Dry January, there’s just something so compelling about a clean slate. There’s a mindset component that reminds you that you can do hard things and trains your discipline muscle. There are also the material rewards: a faster computer after a digital detox, a replenished savings account after a “no-spend” challenge, or the promise of a clearer complexion when you do a skin detox.

But “detox” has become a buzzword in the wellness community. These days, I’m skeptical when I hear about the powers of the latest trendy cleanse. While some big changes can yield big results—like quitting caffeine or going grain-free—I’ve found the most sustainable change comes by sticking with the basics. But after the holidays, when I’ve neglected my routines and my skin is paying for it, I inevitably begin a skin reset.

Featured image from our interview with Megan O’Neill by Belathée Photography.

What is a skin detox?

A skin detox is an attempt to purge the toxins from your skin by changing your diet or switching up your skincare products. There are some short-term solutions to purge the toxins from your skin, like sweating them out in a sauna or getting a detox facial treatment. But for a more effective, long-term skin detox, the answers are found in your gut or skincare routine.

When you detox your skin through food, you go back to basics. We know that what we eat affects our gut health, but do you know the connection between gut health and skin? It explains why you break out after indulging in sugar and why your face is puffy after too much salt. Food allergies, poor diet, and a lack of good gut bacteria can show up on your face. So, doing a skin detox often goes hand in hand with a food detox.

The Power of a Skincare Reset

The other option is a skincare reset. If food isn’t contributing to a duller complexion, it might be external toxins like pollutants, harsh chemicals, substances (like alcohol or smoking), or even using the wrong skincare for your skin type.

With the right products and tools, you can indulge in a professional-level detox to give your skin a clean slate. But don’t go rushing to buy pore strips and abrasive scrubs. A detox shouldn’t be a quick fix. Instead, it should help you clear away dead skin cells, sebum, and clogged pores—while also detoxing your skin long-term.

To unravel toxic detox myths from the facts, I spoke with Kylie Bensley, MS, RD and clinical dietician at Sulinu Nutrition and Athena Hewett, celebrity esthetician and founder of the clean beauty brand Monastery. Ahead, our experts uncover the truth: can you really detox your skin?

Would you recommend a skin detox?

Insights shared by Kylie Bensley, MS, RD

I regularly do them and recommend them. As we are exposed to more pollutants every day, a detox is a way to ‘reset’ our bodies, lower our toxin threshold, and become more mindful of our surrounding pollutants. The detox should not feel like you are depriving yourself, starving yourself, or feeling unhealthy in any way.

I highly recommend making it a holistic experience: Drinking hibiscus tea while detoxing in a dry sauna, deep breathing while giving yourself a lymphatic massage, and supplementing your drinks with psyllium husk to cleanse the colon.

Skin Detox Foods

Foods that are good for detoxing skin have the ability to bind to toxins and remove them from the body. Also look for glutathione producers. Glutathione is a nutrient that binds to mycotoxin—a toxin that wreaks havoc on the skin—and carries it out of the body.

By eating foods that support more glutathione production, we improve toxin removal in our skin. Foods that do this are:

 • Broccoli
 • Bell Peppers
 • Cauliflower
 • Beets
 • Cranberries
 • Garlic
 • Kale
 • Arugula
 • Radishes
 • Cranberries

Each food has a function. Look for foods rich in zinc, copper, and manganese—the three cofactors for collagen production, such as, Brazil nuts, pistachios, bone broth, and pumpkin seeds.

The Best Beverages to Detox Your Skin

Hibiscus tea. This tea is used in Ayurvedic medicine due to its cooling effect on the skin and its ability to decrease skin pollutants. The brews are rich in an antioxidant called myricetin that can help reduce collagen breakdown.

Chlorophyll drinks. Chlorophyll powdered drinks have been shown to prevent the accumulation of the persistent organic pollutant dioxin.

Cranberry juice. Cranberry juice works to cleanse the lymphatic system, which neutralizes waste products from the body’s tissues. (Try adding a sleepy girl mocktail in your nighttime routine!)

Green tea. Green tea contains polyphenols that are associated with reduced inflammation and lowered sebum production.

Nourish bowl recipe for skin detox.

What ingredients in food cause acne?

In general, factory-farmed dairy, sugar, and gluten are the major culprits of acne. Some estimates say that 75% of the world’s population is lactose intolerant. If you have any acne problems, the first step is to switch to dairy-free versions of products.

Sugar is now found in nearly all foods. Essentially, if the ingredient ends in “-ose” on the label, it is sugar. Sugar has the ability to cause insulin surges, increasing the risk of acne. Safer sugars are stevia, raw honey, or maple syrup.

Gluten can be another trigger. Instead of eating “gluten-free” foods with fillers, eat a diet that is naturally gluten-free. I recommend getting your carbs from gluten-free sources that also promote blood sugar balance, such as sweet potatoes, quinoa, and lentils.

You can also do some type of food sensitivity or food intolerance testing, as acne-causing ingredients are individualized. A food sensitivity test will give you the best sources for causing acne.

How long does it take to detox skin?

It depends upon the toxic load you are carrying. Some people notice a difference in six weeks while others take several years because the toxic load is so built up in the liver and the body is working hard to excrete it.

Skincare.

Can you detox your skin with products?

While a lifestyle shift can transform your skin from the inside out, a little help from the right products goes a long way. By doing a skin detox, you can cleanse the dirt and impurities from your skin for a glowing complexion. Whether you experience sensitive skin issues like psoriasis or eczema or you have oily skin prone to breakouts, a skin detox can help prevent irritation and flood your skin with nutrients.

But a detox is a detox. It often means forgoing makeup and abrasive products in favor of double cleansing and increased water intake. It also means engaging in skin-healthy habits like cleaning your makeup brushes and auditing your products for expired makeup. The detoxification process is not just clay masks and moisturizers.

“It can sound very daunting but don’t be afraid of it,” says Athena. “The rewards will be worth it. The next time you don’t have to wear makeup or sunblock for the next few days give it a try!”

Best Skincare Products to Support a Detox

Insights shared by Athena Hewett, esthetician

Often products that we use on our skin put it in reactive mode when it needs a chance to just be. For a skin detox, try something very mild that won’t tamper with the top layer of the skin (your microbiome or skin barrier). You need your natural good bacteria and oils to flourish. They are there to help fight off the bad bacteria, and if you remove the good bacteria, problems arise.

It can be as little as three days to a week [to detox your skin through skincare products]. But many years ago, when I was struggling with stage 3 acne, I did a detox for six weeks and it completely cleared my skin. I formulated the Rose Cleansing Oil at this time because I needed something that would only sit atop the skin—something that wouldn’t strip or change my skin at all. For the record, I’ve never broken out ever again.

How often should you detox your skin?

It just really depends. If you are using actives or brands that may have ingredients that are not the cleanest, then probably at least every few months.

Step 1: Cleanser

Double cleansing can remove impurities from your skin and clear excess sebum. Make sure to choose a cleanser that detoxes without stripping your skin of good oils or disrupting your microbiome.

Step 2: Gentle Exfoliation

Out: harsh, skin-stripping products. In: gentle chemical exfoliants that clear away dead skin cells without harming your microbiome.

Step 3: Detox Serum

Don’t overload your skin with too many serums. For a skin detox, look for pore-clearing ingredients like niacinamide and non-comedogenic hydrators like hyaluronic acid.

Step 4: Lightweight Moisturizer

Your moisturizer might be sabotaging your skin goals. We get it—in the colder months, we want to cocoon our skin with creams upon creams. Pare down to one lightweight moisturizer that clears your pores instead of clogging them.

Step 5: Detoxifying Mask

A mask can be your secret weapon in a skin reset. While some clay masks rupture your moisture barrier and irritate your skin, these masks refresh and reset your complexion.

To be or not to be… practical? That is the (ultimate beauty) question. The plight of all makeup wearers has always been the choice between practicality and aesthetics—especially when it comes to lipstick. We’ve adapted, of course. Carrying mini mirrors in our purses, constantly reapplying and blotting, and counting on our friends (the good ones) to tell us if we have any smudges on our teeth. But does it have to be this way? What if we could go out without digging for the right shade of lipstick to replace the coat now smudged on our coffee cup? Enter: the best lip stains that get the job done.

Lip stains are not new, but they’re increasingly becoming the lip product of choice. We’re entering a new age where the best makeup is made to suit our lifestyles, not get in the way of them. From multi-tasking products to trends that celebrate what we actually look like, it was only a matter of time before we swapped out smudgy lipsticks for long-lasting color choices fit for all skin tones.

Lip trends are no longer just about the color du jour. The best products prioritize hydrating ingredients and powerful pigments. The matte trend gave us long-wearing products, but the trade-off was dry lips. The enduring glazed lip trend offers hydration, but not the transfer-free pouts that work for our everyday lives. So if you’re seeking products that nourish your lips and last through the day, read on to discover the best lip stains on the market.

The Difference Between Lipsticks and Lip Stains

There used to be just lip balms and lipsticks. Now we’re spoiled by choice. Lipsticks are your classic creamy makeup staple. But now there are also liquid lipsticks, which give you the same coverage without the waxy coating.

So, what sets the lip stains, oils, and tints taking over the beauty sphere apart? Let’s investigate.

 • Lip Tints: A sheer color option for a more effortless look.
 • Lip Gloss: A sticky gloss coating that gives your lips a shiny surface.
 • Lip Oils: An oil-based product with a liquid, glazed finish.
 • Lip Stains: A long-lasting liquid that absorbs into the skin.

What makes a lip stain long-lasting?

Unlike other lip products, lip stains don’t just sit on top of your lips. They absorb into your skin to create a long-lasting pigment that doesn’t budge. Since the pigment is not on the surface of your skin, it’s transfer-proof.

Ingredients to Look For in a Lip Stain

The best lip stains are as nourishing as they are pigmented. Look for ingredients that give your skin moisture and lasting hydration, such as:

 • Jojoba oil
 • Shea butter
 • Coconut oil
 • Squalane
 • Hyaluronic acid
 • Beeswax
 • Honey
 • Aloe vera
 • Petroleum jelly
 • Avocado
 • Vitamin E

How to Apply a Lip Stain

The right lip stain goes—and stays—on smooth. But preparing your pout doesn’t hurt. Some lip stains go on with just one swipe or a couple for more buildable coverage. Others, you have to swipe or peel away.

Whatever type of lip product you choose, proper lip care can boost your lip health:

 • Use a lip scrub weekly. To avoid your lip product flaking or sticking to dry patches on your skin, add an exfoliating lip scrub to your routine to give yourself a clean slate.
 • Try a nightly lip mask. The best way to hydrate your lips is to drench them with a nightly lip mask. You’ll wake up to hydrated lips, which create a healthy canvas for your daily products.
 • Choose your lip balm wisely. Did you know that some lip balms slowly suck the moisture out of your lips? Choose one with hydrating ingredients like natural oils to nourish your lips instead of just applying a synthetic glossy coating.
 • Remove with an oil-based cleanser. How you take off your lip stain is just as important as how you put it on. By gently wiping (don’t rub or scrub!) with an oil-based cleanser, you can easily remove pigment without drying out your lips.

Life is a game of “Would You Rather?”—from big decisions to small, everything has a potential reward or consequence. Would you rather stay home or move to a new city? Would you rather spend the money or save it? Would you rather have one more glass or… what? Sometimes, the decisions that seem insignificant can have a bigger effect than we anticipated. Embarking on a monthlong journey of sobriety is certainly one of those. For anyone dipping their toe into Dry January, it can feel like you’re venturing into the unknown. Whether you’re doing it as a detox or in pursuit of a more permanent lifestyle change, cutting back might come with some surprises. Especially the effects of alcohol on skin.

Alcohol impacts everything from coordination to judgment and sleep. And while there can be plenty of reasons to hit pause, you might be more motivated to swap out that glass of Pinot for something zero-proof once you get a better idea of alcohol’s effects on your skin.

The Effects of Alcohol on Skin

For many, healthy, glowing skin is an unintended consequence of a dive into sober curiosity. I’m all about this accidental intersection of synergy and satisfaction—the things we find along the journey that remind us why we started it. Most of us know that less imbibing can come with plenty of physical and mental benefits, including improved cognitive function and hormone health, better sleep, mood stability, and balanced blood sugar. It’s invigorating to discover yet another potential benefit of the experiment: a healthier, lit-from-within complexion.

Maybe it’s because I’m motivated by near-instant gratification, but I like seeing results as much as I love feeling them. To learn more about the effects of alcohol on our skin, I reached out to Nutrition Consultant Edie Horstman for answers and insights.

Edie Horstman

Edie is the founder of nutrition coaching business, Wellness with Edie. With her background and expertise, she specializes in women’s health, including fertility, hormone balance, and postpartum wellness.

It All Starts in the Gut

Alcohol affects our gut health, which, in turn, affects our skin. It disrupts our gut microbiota balance, leading to an overgrowth of not-so-good bacteria and a reduction in beneficial bacteria. This imbalance can contribute to inflammation and various digestive issues.

Alcohol is dehydrating, causing dry, flaky skin and a dull complexion. It also dilates blood vessels, potentially causing redness in the cheeks, chest, and neck. Chronic alcohol consumption may contribute to inflammation, exacerbating skin conditions like rosacea and acne.

There’s also research that shows alcohol can interfere with collagen production, accelerating the aging process and promoting the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

How Drinking Less Can Benefit the Skin

Conversely, because so many of our internal systems work in tandem, it makes sense that the residual benefits of cutting back on alcohol would promote a healthy glow. Horstman cites the following as skin benefits you can expect from drinking less:

 • Improved skin hydration
 • Decreased inflammation
 • Reduced redness
 • Fewer fine lines

Plus, drinking less leads to better sleep quality, which further promotes overall skin health and a more radiant complexion.

If you’re sober curious, these are some of our favorite non-alcoholic drinks to stock up on. (Consult our full list of editor-approved, zero-proof drinks.)

Nutritionist-Approved Tips to Support Your Skin If You Choose to Drink

Though we’re beginning to better understand the negative impacts of alcohol on our health, it’s still present in our world today. Horstman lists the following as key things to keep in mind to promote skin health.

 • Stay hydrated. Drinking water and electrolytes between drinks isn’t just good for preventing hangovers. It helps keep your skin hydrated and dewy as well.
 • Moderation is key. Moderate alcohol consumption is generally defined as one drink per day for women, but consuming even fewer drinks is better.
 • Choose clear spirits (vodka or gin). These have fewer congeners, which are fermentation byproducts that can contribute to skin irritation. Mix with unsweetened sparkling water and citrus instead of sugary mixers.
 • Nibble on antioxidant-rich foods. Think berries, veggies, and ginger to help combat oxidative stress and inflammation.
 • Keep skin protected. MOISTURIZE and wear sunscreen!

Our Favorite Skincare Products to Combat the Effects of Alcohol

Blue Lagoon Silica Mud Mask

Made of silica from Iceland’s famous blue lagoons, this white clay mask gently draws out impurities. It also helps balance and refresh your skin for an instantly glowing complexion.

Superegg Vitamin Collective Vitality Elixir

Because alcohol is known to dull and dehydrate, we love leaning on this brightening serum that saturates the skin with antioxidants to protect against free radicals.

La Roche-Posay Double Repair Face Moisturizer

In wine and skincare, the French know best. This cult-favorite moisturizer nourishes dry skin with soothing niacinamide, glycerin (known to naturally attract water to the skin), and skin barrier-strengthening Ceramide-3. We apply to the face and neck for fast-absorbing protection.

Kinship Self Reflect Sunscreen SPF 32

We love the glowy finish this moisturizing SPF leaves on the skin (with zero white cast, of course). Turmeric provides an antioxidant boost, keeping blemish-prone skin clear and protected.

I Work in Fashion, and These 12 Style Trends Will Be Everywhere In 2024 https://camillestyles.com/beauty/2024-fashion-trends/ https://camillestyles.com/beauty/2024-fashion-trends/#respond Tue, 09 Jan 2024 11:00:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=256508 There are no rules.

The post I Work in Fashion, and These 12 Style Trends Will Be Everywhere In 2024 appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>
2023 was the year of quiet luxury, Barbiecore, and coquette. For me, it was also the year I started finding a groove with my style—taking more chances and wearing more of what I love. It helps that I not only work in fashion but also alongside some of the most stylish people I know. (Our office mirror is famous for capturing some incredible OOTDs.)

One of the hardest, yet most fun, parts about my job is trying to predict what will sell 12 months in advance by identifying and choosing the top 2024 fashion trends to lean into throughout the year. From studying the runways to gaining inspiration from style icons, to letting my creativity run a bit wild, it’s safe to say I’ve done my research on the fashion trends that’ll soon take over your feeds.

Whether you’re looking to reinvent your style in the new year or simply wondering what we’ll all be wearing this year, I’ve rounded up the top 2024 fashion trends below—plus photo inspo and my favorite pieces to help make each look your own.

And though it’s easy to go crazy buying up the latest trending items on Zara and H&M, my number one piece of advice when it comes to trends is to shop your closet first. While it’s always fun to treat yourself to something new, chances are, some of these 2024 fashion trends are spin-offs from years past and you might be able to give new life to something that’s been gathering dust in the back of your closet. I’ve also recently started “shopping” Pinterest, saving outfits that I like, and trying to recreate them with pieces I already own. Remember: Curating a wardrobe you love is a journey, and it’s one that she be approved with thoughtfulness and care.

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Bridget Chambers

Bridget Chambers is a Texas native currently living in Los Angeles, California. While earning a Business Honors degree at The University of Texas, she enjoyed styling her friends for events, spotting designer lookalikes for less, and running an Instagram account called Bridget on a Budget. She now channels her love for fashion into her full-time role at Daily Drills, where she coordinates everything from fashion production to brand partnerships to events, blurring the lines of work and play.

Chocolate Brown

Red was the main character of 2023, from Hailey Bieber’s strawberry girl makeup to pops of red taking over our TikTok feeds. Moving into the new year, it’s time to dip those strawberries into chocolate because rich brown tones are taking over in 2024. A monochrome chocolate brown look exudes quiet luxury, but if you want to get creative with color, mixing browns and blacks will earn you a stamp of approval from stylists. Though once a fashion faux pas, rules are meant to be broken, and this color combo is an easy on-trend look.

Maximalist Jewelry

When it comes to jewelry, more is more—a little something I learned from the queen of maximalist jewelry herself, Rocky Barnes. Just like mixing browns and blacks, styling both gold and silver jewelry is one of my favorite 2024 fashion trends on the rise. Dip your toe into this trend with a pair of chunky earrings from brands like Heaven Mayhem and pile strands of vintage-inspired necklaces from Galley Los Angeles to your neckline.

Flirty Fem

2023 has been coined the year of the girl, with Margot Robbie and the Barbie movie creating a craze for all things pink. And of course, ballet flats made an unexpected comeback (we all love an underdog story!). After seeing about a thousand Christmas trees with coquette-style bows to replace ornaments, I have a feeling this trend isn’t going anywhere, though it will take on some new forms in the new year. A-line silhouettes, peplums, and lace are a few of the girliest 2024 fashion trends we can expect to see.

Big (And I Mean BIG) Bags

Though the microscopic Louis Vuitton handbag made headlines in 2023, oversized catch-all bags will be newsworthy in 2024. Practicality is back in style and the fashion girlies are carrying bags that will actually carry their stuff—without sacrificing style, of course. The Row leads the charge on this trend, but don’t worry, you can still get the look for less.

Layers on Layers

If you’re a bit wary of bold fashion trends, let layering be your style goal for 2024. Layering will be the mark of a “cool girl” this year, while also being achievable for anyone. Letting a sliver of a white tee shirt peek through from underneath a sweater, adding a frilly sock to your go-to loafers, or tossing on a quilted vest over a collared shirt are just a few easy, small ways to make an outfit more interesting.

Wrong Shoe Theory

This is one of my favorite 2023 styling tips that’s growing legs in 2024. Coined via TikTok, The Wrong Shoe Theory states that an outfit is made more interesting with an unexpected shoe—AKA, be bold with your styling choices.

If you were to wear a very feminine outfit, The Wrong Shoe Theory would say that a chunky sneaker or boot would take the look to the next level. In contrast, a sportier or edgier look should be paired with a ballet flat or slingbacks. Keep this in mind as you shop your closet for 2024 fashion trends, as just making a funky footwear choice will set you well on your way.

Barrel Leg Jeans

While this shape may not be for everyone, barrel-leg or horseshoe jeans are the style of the new year. With a high waist and a voluminous leg, these pants give you a bit more shape than ultra-baggy wide-leg denim, while still steering clear of the skinny jean. It’s unexpected and can be surprisingly flattering—we’re here for it.

Testing Textures

NYC Wardrobe Stylist Mac Rose has gone viral on TikTok for her advice that “if an outfit is not interesting through color, then it has to be interesting through shape. If it’s not interesting through shape, then it has to be interesting through texture.”

I’ve loved seeing how everyone interprets this styling advice through their videos. But what really sticks out to me is the use of texture to create a unique outfit. Pleats, sequins, and sherpa were all over the fashion week runways and never fail to add depth and interest.

Pointed Toe Shoes

As a self-diagnosed shoe addict, pointed toe sandals and slingbacks might be my favorite of the 2024 fashion trends—though they had to grow on me. (Before I could fully adopt the trend, I had to erase the image of the Wicked Witch under Dorothy’s house from my mind.) Now, I see the shoes for their chic ability to elongate your legs and add sass to a look. Try pairing a pointed-toe with a long trouser or jean, letting just the tip of the shoe make its point—metaphorically and literally.

Mini Everything (Except Your Bag)

While bags are getting bigger, clothes are getting smaller. One of the 2024 fashion trends that is slowly making its way from the runway to our wardrobes is micro mini shorts and skirts. These barely-there bottoms are a chance to go bold with your styling. Though the full extent of this trend intimidates even me, you can still hop on the bandwagon with traditional shorts and mini skirts. Adding tights to the look can tone down the drama as needed.

Relaxed Tailoring

Overly oversized silhouettes are slowly on the out, and relaxed, yet tailored styles are heading back in. Skinny jeans remain in exile, but straight-legged denim, form-fitted blazers, and stylish suiting are roaming the streets. Look for styles that are loose enough to be comfy but fitted enough to show your shape when building your 2024 wardrobe.

All Things Sheer

Sheer is chic in 2024. Another trend that you can embody to varying degrees, try adding a bold burgundy tight under your mini skirt or go head-to-toe with a sheer dress over Skims undergarments. Mesh shoes even had a moment in 2023, which is a testament that this trend is going big—and not going home anytime soon.

Last year, on a whim, I quit caffeine. I don’t remember the exact reason, but I remember the first few days of headaches and fatigue sans matcha. Thankfully, my cravings are long behind me, and when reflecting on the last year, I thought—what small change can I make this year that could shift everything? It makes sense that my word for 2024 is curiosity, and I’m excited to see what I’ll love, grow out of, and fall into in the year ahead. Of course, as a beauty editor, I’m also curious about the 2024 beauty trends that will impact our daily routines and rituals in the year ahead.

From 90s grunge to Y2K kitsch, trends often influence how we understand and reflect on different periods in our lives. We associate certain aesthetic choices with our life experiences. Looking through old pictures can be like watching our own personal eras tour. We remember who we were with different hair, a different makeup routine, or when we (all) inevitably over-plucked our eyebrows.

We can’t predict what this year will bring, but we can pinpoint the 2024 beauty trends you’ll be seeing everywhere. Curious? Read on.

2024 beauty trends skincare products.

You’d think skincare routines are a constant. Sure, some treat theirs like a predictable ritual immune to the influence of the trend cycle. But that’s far from the truth. Skincare trends are among the most volatile. With new discoveries, technologies, and even application methods constantly circulating the internet, it can be difficult to cut out the noise.

As a beauty editor, I’m eager to try every new product I can get my hands on. I’ve discovered niche ingredients I can’t live without, but I’ve also made a slew of mistakes so you don’t have to. With this year’s latest skincare innovations vying for space in your vanity, these are the trends worth trying out.

Science-Backed Skincare

Is 2024 the year we sever our attachment to social media skincare trends? As trust wanes on heavily-produced before and after skincare videos, many people are going back to basics—and trusting their dermatologists. Skincare made or backed by science and experts is going to outshine pretty packaging this year.

Skin Streaming

A new take on skin minimalism (aka ‘skinimalism‘), skin streaming refers to streamlining your routine to its essentials. The basics according to skin streaming include a cleanser, an antioxidant serum, a moisturizer, and a sunscreen. Though I’m all for whimsical products like my skin milks and hydrogel face masks, skin streaming is more attainable and affordable. Whether you pare down permanently or try it when your skin is irritated, this is a TikTok trend we can get behind.

Gentle Exfoliation

Over-exfoliation is over. The 2024 beauty trends forecast favors a protected skin barrier. But this doesn’t mean you have to throw out all your peels and tonics—just rethink your approach. Instead of reaching for the formulas with the highest acid percentage, evaluate which formulations are best for your skin and skincare concerns. Choose between AHAs, BHAs, and PHAs discerningly and practice gentle exfoliation a few times a week instead of every night. Your skin barrier will thank you.

Facial Massages

The best beauty routines are the ones that feel like a wellness ritual instead of a chore. Some days I can barely muster up the energy to wash my face, let alone go through the motions of a tedious routine. But no matter how tired I am, I always feel better after giving myself a facial massage.

The simple ritual helps with lymphatic drainage and facial sculpting while also relaxing my muscles (who else holds all their tension in their jaw?) and reminding me to be more present. This year, facial massages you can do with just your hands will be all the rage. I still love all my gadgets and gua sha, but a quick massage with warm hands is so much more accessible.

Hand and Neck Care

Your hands and neck are the first places to show signs of aging. So even if you apply skincare and sunscreen to your face diligently, you’re probably forgetting these key areas. Good news: there’s a new class of skincare products made to protect your hands and neck with powerful ingredients like collagen and retinol. And this year, you’ll be seeing them everywhere.

SPF Reapplication

Speaking of protecting your skin, there’s no better force against the elements than SPF. But even if you lather yourself with SPF50 before leaving the house, remember to reapply. Let 2024 be the year you top up your sun protection every two hours. From SPF makeup powders to sunscreen sticks, there are options for all lifestyles. Remember, the best sun protection is the one you’ll actually wear— and reapply.

Makeup products - 2024 beauty trends

The Makeup Looks You’ll Love

Whether you’re switching up your daily look or wanting to experiment with something bold, makeup trends are the place to showcase your creativity.

Over the past few years, makeup has seen a shift. Instead of using it to cover up our insecurities, makeup has become an exciting form of self-expression. In this spirit, celebrity makeup artists and runway looks have encouraged creativity—adding a pop of color here and a new shade there. These are the 2024 beauty trends the makeup industry can’t get enough of.

Bring on the Blush

Whether you call this the Strawberry Girl aesthetic or the Sabrina Carpenter look, participating in this winter’s biggest makeup trend means piling on the blush. Exaggerate the apples of your cheeks and the top of your nose with a heavy wash of red or pink pigments. The dramatic contrast works even better if you keep the rest of the look natural. I’ve always said my ideal vacation makeup is nothing but sunscreen with a lip and cheek multi-stick, so I’m ready for this trend to take over and evolve throughout the year.

Spider Lashes

Spider lashes are the 2024 version of Twiggy’s signature 60s look. It’s achieved by using mascara to create distinct, spider-like lashes. Hot tip: high-quality mascara is the key to achieving this look without clumping.

Permanent Freckles

Faux freckles have been an increasingly popular makeup trend in recent years. Now, following other permanent makeup trends like lip blushing and micro-blading, you can get permanent freckles with a quick trip to the salon instead of laying out in the sun. While I’ve been seeing this online everywhere, I’ll be keeping tabs to see if this one takes off in real life—or if people will stick to drawing on freckles with liquid liner.

Lots of Lip

Lip plumpers, lip filler, lip stains, oh my! The beauty industry can’t get enough of lip trends. In 2024, expect more fun takes on lip looks this year. “Hyaluronic acid lips” (using hyaluronic acid under your favorite lip balm) is the trending natural alternative to lip plumpers. And new shades of lip gloss and lip oils keep hitting the shelves. Right now, everyone is wearing berry-toned lips and the brown “latte makeup” trend also seems to be holding strong.

We all know the feeling of looking in the mirror and asking ourselves: Should I get bangs? Should I cut off all my hair? While taking a big risk with your hair can sometimes pay off, I’ve found it’s usually better to consult my hair stylist before making any rash decision. So when approaching 2024 beauty trends, we’re sticking to smaller shifts and focusing on making our hair as healthy as it can be.

Two-Tone Hair

A step down from 2023’s Gemini hair, two-tone hair refers to different ways of incorporating another shade into your hair. This can be highlights, ombre, or shattered roots, and it’s often a more natural contrast that gives your hair dimension without risking too much regret.

Nighttime Hair Rituals

Your haircare routine doesn’t end after you rinse and repeat. The truth is, healthy hair is made in your sleep. 2024 is the year of incorporating hair rituals into our nighttime routines. Using natural ingredients like hair oiling or rice water sprays is one option, so is wrapping your hair in silk or using a satin pillow.

Side Part

Will 2024 be the end of the middle part? Side parts are the most surprising comeback of the year. Over the past few years, middle parts reigned with sleek, low-maintenance hairstyles. But blowouts are back, and with bouncier hair comes the dramatic side part. Now the ultimate question: do you part your hair on the right or left?

Whimsical Accessories

Call it a symptom of the pandemic, but hair accessories over the past few years have been very functional. Don’t get me wrong. I love the practicality of a claw clip and a headband. But the recent surge in ribbons and bows reminded me of a time when hair trends were just pretty. Pretty and impractical. Whimsical and over the top. That’s the vibe for hair accessories in 2024.

Trends are a reflection of our time, but they can also signal a fresh start—especially when it comes to the beauty industry. In honor of a welcome New Year ahead, we tapped a stable of beauty world heavy-hitters to help us sift through fleeting fads and pinpoint their best bets for 2024 beauty trend predictions.

While compiling the following beauty trends, we noticed that most fell into the skincare realm (a reaction to a consumer shift toward serums and moisturizers over makeup), and often speak to the sophistication of today’s buyer. The market may feel saturated, but skincare lovers are more educated than ever. They’re seeking out what actually works for them and are understanding the science as to why.

It’s an exciting, innovative time in the beauty world. The following 2024 beauty trend predictions feel like a hopeful response to that fact.

Featured image from our interview with Mary Ralph.

Quiet Luxury, The Beauty Edition

“The rise of ‘quiet luxury’ we saw come to the forefront of consumer consciousness in early fall ’23 is here to stay. A term initially coined for fashion—timeless, understated pieces that look expensive due to their high-quality materials—will influence the beauty industry as consumers seek effective, high-quality products that are both sophisticated and simple. (This doesn’t mean a steep price tag!)” — Monique Meneses, a 15-year former beauty brand consultant and founder of IOTA

Violette_FR Invisible Bandage

“I am obsessed with this skincare innovation that goes on like a clear topcoat to soothe, protect and prime blemishes, minor cuts, and burns,” Meneses shares. “The chic brush applicator dispenses the perfect amount!”

“I’m swapping rich, saturated lipstick for these super-hyrating, sheer-but-buildable shades that melt onto lips for a rich, glossy finish,” says Meneses.

Functional Fragrances

“In 2024 I’m pretty sure we’ll continue to see the rise of the functional fragrance movement as the next big perfume trend—where fragrance isn’t just about smelling good but is scientifically designed to be a powerful catalyst for mental well-being. I think we’ll see more scents that help with stress reduction and mood enhancement, ushering in a new era where fragrance not only awakens the senses but also contributes to a balanced mind and body.” Rosie Johnston, Founder/CEO of By/Rosie Jane

Regenerative Aesthetics

“People are looking for a much more “natural” look now, particularly the younger generation. They are less interested in that “high cheek contour” and “extra full” lips—prejuvenation is much more popular. The trend is moving to less filters and less makeup, with more focus on skincare and anti-aging.” — SkinSpirit Physician’s Assistant Kristin Polega

Polega does recommend dermal fillers for that rejuvenated look, but not just any kind.

“I love Sculptra Aesthetic because we remove the “shock factor” that some people feel with filler. It provides a gradual build-up over time, so the results are subtle yet impressive when comparing photos.”

Scalp Care is Here to Stay

“Throughout 2023 we saw a comparison drawn between scalp care and skincare. As many companies move into the space and capitalize on the trend, our job as stylists is to further learn and educate clients about what we think are the most effective solutions available.” — Jay Small, Celebrity Hairstylist and Co-Founder of Arey

Regardless of hair texture, density, or style preference, Small recommends two things when treating the scalp at home.

 • Ditch the added fragrance in scalp serums. “Scent is more for the experience and less about the health of your scalp,” Small explains. “I would also look for a water-based formula that is free of oil—preferably one that is backed by research and science.”
 • Look for gentle products. “Scalp scrub doesn’t have to literally scrub your scalp!” Small adds. “The most common causes of buildup on the scalp are oil and dead skin cells. Using a product that is less abrasive and contains ingredients that target that build up is key.”

AREY Scrub Scalp Exfoliant

“When formulating Scrub, we wanted to focus on the most effective ingredients to cleanse the scalp, so we chose salicylic, glycolic and lactic acid, which gently remove buildup and won’t irritate the scalp,” says Arey founder Jay Small.

The Skincare-ification of Nails

“2023 was a big, bling-filled nail year where studded talons and metallics prevailed, but I predict that 2024 nail trends will be dialed down with more of an emphasis on flaunting the underlying healthy nail, à la the no-makeup-makeup looks that have prevailed.” — Dr. Dana Stern, Board-Certified Dermatologist and Founder of Dr. Dana

For reference, Dr. Stern nods to fashion: “Helmut Lang’s spring/summer show models wore sans-serif typeface nails, which have a minimalist tattoo-like vibe. Jin Soon created a similarly chic, understated yet edgy look for Jason Wu’s show where black dots and lines were used over a clear base, again flaunting the underlying healthy, well-cared-for nail. Also, Holly Falcone created a clean, but playful and somewhat fanciful look for Sandy Liang’s 2024 runway show where nails were painted with an almost translucent pearly base and accented with satin bows and delicate gems, again flaunting the underlying clean, healthy nail.”

Sami Bernstein Spalter

The Rise of the Trichologist

“A trichologist is a professional that studies the hair and scalp. Often we don’t know who to turn to for matters of scalp health—is it our dermatologist or our hairstylist? A trichologist bridges the gap between both, helping to diagnose and advise on everything from dandruff, hair loss, damaged hair strands, and overexposure to chemicals or styling. More and more I am speaking with hairstylists that are getting certified in trichology.” Jay Small, Celebrity Hairstylist and Co-Founder of Arey

Less Sameness on the Shelves

“Given the oversaturation in the market and overflowing shelves, as well as economic pressures across the board, I believe customers will invest in brands that are truly innovating with a clear point of difference that goes beyond trendy marketing. The last few years have seen a lot of ‘sameness’ on the shelves and I think we’ll start to see that fizzle in the spirit of focus and customer-led innovation.” — Stephanie DiPisa, CEO + Founder of Solara Suncare

“The mind-skin-gut connection will inspire more brands to highlight how comprehensive well-being and physical appearance are interconnected as the lines between wellness and beauty become even more blurred.” — Monique Meneses, a 15-year former beauty brand consultant and founder of IOTA

Vyrao Witchy Woo Eau de Parfum

“I love what founder Yasmin Sewell is doing with the first healing perfume brand, Vyrao,” says Meneses. “Each aroma is specifically blended to encourage positive feelings for the wearer and even better, each is powered by a Herkimer crystal, known for its healing properties, which is charged by energy worker Louise Mita in Hawaii.”

IOTA Supermatcha Body Lotion+

“It’s like the healthiest matcha mousse dessert for skin with 16 vitamins and minerals from superfoods like matcha, rambutan, snow mushroom, caffeine, and face-grade actives like niacinamide,” notes Meneses. “It helps firm your body but also benefits your overall health.”

Science-Backed Ingredients

“I think consumers will be moving past some of the latest social media-driven ingredients or marketing trends in a return to craving more science-backed, high-performing ingredients. Brands that take that seriously and remain transparent and focused in their expertise will continue to thrive.” — Stephanie DiPisa, CEO + Founder of Solara Suncare

The post When to Use an Exfoliating Face Wash—and Our Top Picks for Dull Skin appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>
I’ll be honest. It wasn’t until I started double cleansing that I even thought about what kind of face wash I was using, let alone its ingredients. But the first—and one of the most important—steps of your skincare routine can transform your complexion. If it’s clear, glowy skin you’re after, the best exfoliating face washes can get the job done.

That being said, digging into exfoliating cleansers can be a little more complicated than other product categories. There are two types: chemical and physical, the latter of which can cause a bit of debate (more on that in a minute). It’s also important to find a rhythm with exfoliating face washes—they’re not typically an every night kind of thing.

But once you find the right brand fit and frequency, a great exfoliating face wash will become a glow-inducing, acne-fighting staple of your skincare routine. Trust us. For guidance, we tapped three skincare experts: board-certified dermatologist Dr. Elizabeth Geddes-Bruce; Olivia Quido, founder of O Skincare; and Laura Acre, director of R&D at Thrive Natural Care.

How often should we use an exfoliating face wash?

Even the most gentle exfoliating face wash is still hard working. “For most people, two to three times a week is enough, but you can exfoliate more often if your skin tolerates it well,” says Acre.

Ingredients to Look For

Plenty of brands make a great exfoliating face wash (it wasn’t hard to gather the products below), but knowing what you’re looking for can help you find the best fit for you.

“A good exfoliating wash usually has a single or combination of alpha or beta hydroxy acids and enzymes,” shares Geddes.

 • Salicylic Acid (in stronger exfoliators)
 • Glycolic Acid (in stronger exfoliators)
 • Lactic Acids (in more gentle exfoliators)
 • Mandelic Acid (in more gentle exfoliators)
 • Milk (a mild exfoliator)
 • Soothing/Hydrating ingredients like aloe vera, cucumber, lilac stem cell, and green tea
Sanetra Longno

Is it okay to use physical exfoliators?

It’s a heated debate. While chemical exfoliators are known for gently dissolving dead skin cells, physical exfoliants mechanically get the job done with ingredients like microbeads, salts, or rice grains. But is the latter category too abrasive? It depends on who you ask.

“Avoid ingredients like fruit pits or seeds and shells as they can damage the skin with microtears,” shares Acre, who positions herself firmly with the no-physical-exfoliators team.

Dr. Geddes is far more pro, sharing that, “I think physical exfoliators get unfairly knocked. In truth, there’s nothing inherently wrong with that apricot scrub we all tried in our teen years. The problems occurred when people were using it too frequently in an effort to wash away acne. That just doesn’t work.”

Quido sees benefits on both sides but does point out an edge for chemical products. “Chemical exfoliation is most useful for improving skin tone and reducing dullness, and has long-term effects and benefits,” Quido explains. “Unlike physical exfoliation, which only stays on the epidermis layer of the skin, chemical exfoliation gently resurfaces the skin for a smoother, brighter, and more even appearance.”

The Best Exfoliating Face Washes

Armed with recommendations from our experts, tried-and-true test runs, and thorough sleuthing in the “Skincare Addiction” Reddit (a fount of wisdom if there ever was one), we feel confident recommending the following face washes (both physical and chemical) to keep dull skin at bay and provide an even, radiant glow.

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Best Overall: Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant Exfoliator

Skincare Reddit is obsessed, as are several of our experts. With a little water, the slightly gritty, rice-based powder transforms into a foamy, enzyme-packed paste to become a two-in-one hero: a physical scrub and a gentle chemical exfoliator

Best Chemical Exfoliating Face Wash: Revision Skincare Papaya Enzyme Cleanser

This creamy cleanser is a Dr. Geddes-Bruce favorite that’s gentle enough for all skin types and easy to add to any skin care regimen, including those with potentially irritating ingredients like retinoids and vitamin C.

Tata Harper Regenerating Cleanser

All the nostalgia of the apricot scrub from your teenage years without the crushed shell shards, this all-natural formula uses a mix of chemical (BHAs) and physical (apricot microspheres) to clean and buff out clogged pores.

Best Affordable: Versed The Purist Antioxidant Face Cleanser

This is a favorite of Camille Styles Managing Editor, Isabelle. She uses it twice weekly for an all-over glow and loves that it clears out impurities without stripping the skin. The cleanser yields a soft and hydrated result—while maintaining its seal of sensitive skin approval.

Best Exfoliating Face Washes: Honorable Mentions

Ogee Botanical Brilliance Exfoliating Cleanser

Especially good for breakouts and acne-prone skin, Ogee’s formula gently exfoliates while absorbing excess oil for a balanced, beautiful complexion.

AmorePacific Treatment Enzyme Exfoliating Powder Cleanser

This potent, powdery blend is strong enough to be a treatment on its own (a super gentle one!). But when it’s mixed with water, it becomes an exfoliating cream that dissolves as you cleanse your face. It’s perfect for sensitive skin and—because it’s waterless—an excellent travel companion.

Philosophy Microdelivery Exfoliating Facial Wash

If you absolutely must scrub, Philosophy’s practically microscopic beads are satisfying and gentle.

COSMEDIX Clarify Salicylic Acid Foaming Cleanser

Don’t let the words foaming and salicylic acid turn you off. This alcohol- and sulfate-free formula is not the stripping, drying foaming cleansers of your past. It also has soothing aloe and probiotics to encourage healthy bacteria on the skin.

Summer Fridays Soft Reset AHA Exfoliating Solution

The potent blend of niacinamide and 16% AHAs gently sloughs off dead skin cells for a brighter, clearer complexion. Some reviewers noted how strong the product is (tingling is apparently normal), so absolutely do a patch test first if your skin is sensitive.

What does a reset mean to you? Maybe it’s a clean slate or a chance to start fresh. Or perhaps it’s an opportunity to step into the best version of yourself. With 2024 quickly approaching, we’re motivated to craft our vision boards, make sweeping habit changes, and transform our lives. But the key to lasting, meaningful change starts before the clock strikes midnight on NYE. From Camille, I’ve learned that meaningful goal-setting starts with an intention. Who do we want to be in the new year? And to discover that, we have to be clear on who we are now. What are the things that serve us, and what are the things that don’t?

In the final days of the year, I’ve been carrying this mindset into everything I do. It’s inspiring to see every task as a possible entry point for change. Decluttering my wardrobe is a promise to be a more stylish and sustainable person. Scavenging for leftovers in the fridge reminds me that my first grocery haul in 2024 will be a healthier one. And going through the motions of my skincare ritual begs the question: what beauty trends do I want to take with me into the new year—and which am I leaving behind?

Woman applying skincare 2023 beauty trends.

Beauty is such a fickle industry. Yet, it’s a significant part of many of our lives. I’ll always be navigating my relationship with my skin, hair, and overall wellness through the lens of ever-evolving beauty standards—but this doesn’t mean remaining at the mercy of the trend cycle. Some beauty trends offer inspiration while others provide fleeting entertainment before fading into obscurity. These are the beauty trends we loved this year worth keeping—and those we’re leaving behind.

Barbiecore

Call it controversial, but it’s time to say “bye, Barbie.” It’s hard to think of any trend that defined 2023 more than this one. Barbie was a pop culture phenomenon that crossed into literally every sphere of our lives—fashion, beauty, nail trends, and even home decor. And while this fun, femme film will always be close to my heart, the trend has run its course. Pantone named Peach Fuzz 2024’s color of the year, and I’m excited to see this more subdued, retro hue take the crown from Barbie pink.

Concealer Lips

This millennial makeup trend has reared its head again thanks to Sofia Richie. And while some sources call the trend “chic,” the style guru’s beauty influence has raised red flags in the past. (Yes, styling your wet hair into a slick-backed bun will cause breakage.) Even though we’ve come a long way from the caked-on concealer lips of the early aughts, we’re still in favor of other lip trends—like brownie glazed lips and lip stains—that seem to be holding strong.

TikTok Microtrends

Speaking of viral beauty looks, I vote we let them have less influence in 2024. Beauty trends move too quickly to keep up with these days. Tomato girl? Cold girl? Cinnamon cookie butter? The hyper-specific beauty “cores” and food-likened trends are inspiring fodder for experimenting with different aesthetics, but keeping up with each new trend is exhausting. I vow to only try the trends that truly speak to me, instead of buying every viral product that comes across my feed.

Laminated Brows

Laminated brows offer an accessible alternative to expensive microblading treatments. They’ve been described as a longer-lasting version of soap brows. And here’s the thing: I actually still like these. But I’ve been burned by brow trends before. Whether it’s thick or thin brows, somehow we always look back on them with regret. So I say, keep it simple and ditch the brow trends in 2024.

Snail Mucin

Snail mucin has been a popular ingredient in K-beauty products for over a decade and it has finally reached the mainstream. Especially with the nascent popularity of slugging. But in the K-beauty landscape, snail mucin is out and vegan alternatives like bean essence and wild yam are in. Maybe these will make their way into the zeitgeist this year.

DIY Skincare

I’ve gotten into sea moss in my smoothies this year. (Thanks, Erewhon.) But, I’m so sorry, nothing will convince me to put it on my face, despite the alleged skin benefits. This is true for pretty much any potent ingredient. It’s time to put DIY skincare behind us. Luckily, you can get natural ingredients like probiotics, vitamin C, and even olive oil in skincare products instead of your pantry.

Buccal Fat Removal

You know a beauty trend is already dated when you can barely remember it. But no, you didn’t dream it—everyone really was obsessed with buccal fat removal this time last year. While this treatment might have inspired much talk and many headlines, we’ve pretty much already put it to bed. But we can carry the natural facial sculpting trend into 2024.

All the Hydration

Slugging, skin milk, shea butter—this year was all about hydration. No matter your skin type, everyone is at risk for dehydrated skin. So topping up on hydrating ingredients is always a good idea. In 2023, there was a hydrating product for pretty much every step of your routine. And since adequate hydration leads to faster skin recovery, slower signs of aging, and smoother texture, I’m excited to see what 2024 brings.

Oils in Abundance

For too long, people with oily skin were afraid to delve into the world of facial oils. We were also told that oil products were bad for our hair. But 2023 normalized using oils everywhere. Hair oiling, oil cleansing, body oils, and facial oils should all be part of your routine—no matter your skin or hair type.

Retinol, Everywhere

Retinol is not as intimidating as it once was. And it’s creeping into more and more beauty products. Of course, I will always swear by tretinoin to improve skin texture and reduce inflammation. But now, there are so many options to help you start your retinol journey in 2024. Bakuchiol is a fave clean-beauty retinol alternative. And over-the-counter retinol creams make vitamin A easy on your skin. Even retinol body products are having a moment. If you didn’t start retinol this year, make it happen in 2024.

Baby Botox

Baby Botox, aka bite-sized Botox, is the practice of getting smaller injections of Botox for a more natural look. It’s also a good way for Botox beginners to ease into the process. With the rise of preventative Botox and Botox for wellness reasons like muscle tension, small doses of Botox have surprising uses. We’ll see more of them come to light in the new year.

Skinimalism

One of the buzziest skincare trends of 2023 wasn’t a product or a particular look. It was skinimalism: the art of doing less with your skin. After the ubiquity of 10-step skincare routines and the pressure to purchase every so-called miracle product, skinimalism is about slowing down and being intentional about what you put on your skin. The best skincare routine for you isn’t the same as anyone else’s, and skinimalism encourages a personalized, less but better mindset that we see continuing in 2024.

Embracing Aging

For so long, beauty products and treatments have been packaged up as a way for us to delay the inevitable. With that, came an element of shame—that if our skin showed any fine lines, wrinkles, or crow’s feet, we were doing it wrong. Thankfully, the conversation surrounding aging is in the process of shifting, and we’re beginning to see more skincare and makeup brands catering toward highlighting our features and helping us feel best in our own skin.

But rather than canceling our Botox appointments or skipping the eye cream, we’re connecting with the tools available to us in a way that’s empowering and dependent solely on how we want to show up in the world. Continuing into 2024, we’re trying the trends and products that resonate, and leaving whatever doesn’t. After all, what it means to age well is entirely up to you.

Exosomes Are Dermatologists New Favorite Anti-Aging Treatment—Here’s Why https://camillestyles.com/beauty/exosomes/ https://camillestyles.com/beauty/exosomes/#respond Mon, 18 Dec 2023 11:30:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=252051 Find out if they're right for you.

All your beauty questions—answered. Our resident dermatologist, Dr. Geddes Bruce breaks down the biggest topics in beauty, from hair loss to Botox and everything in between. Send us a DM @camillestyles with your own burning q’s and we may address it in a future column.

Remember the vampire facial? It went viral because of its main ingredient: your blood. Basically, it’s a microneedling facial with added platelet-rich plasma (PRP), using the cells in your blood to speed up your skin’s healing process. But there are less dramatic ways to elevate your skin treatments—while still using your skin’s own healing powers to your advantage.

In fact, many skin-favorite products and treatments are so effective for that reason exactly, by harnessing the natural elements in your skin. Think: adding collagen to your routine (whether topically or through supplements) to help boost your natural collagen. Or how ceramides help repair your skin barrier because they’re part of what your skin microbiome is made of. And now, beauty’s buzziest facial sprays use hypochlorous acid, which is produced by your white blood cells, for targeted wound healing. And if you’re looking for the latest way to give your skin a boost, look no further. Exosomes are the latest and greatest in skin repair. Let’s explore.

Everything You Need to Know About Exosomes

My facialist has started offering exosomes as an addition to treatments. I’ve been seeing people talk about this on social media, but how do I know if using exosomes is right for me? Should I look for them in topical products or treatments? Possibly both?

Exosomes are popping up on product labels and in the treatment room. But what exactly are they? And how can they affect your skin? To get to the bottom of this new beauty buzzword, I invited Dr. Geddes-Bruce to share her insights. “Exosomes are one of the ways stem cells communicate, so it’s akin to taking pure vitamin C rather than eating an entire orange to get some,” she explained.

“Exosomes have the potential to address several skin issues like calming redness, evening skin tone, correcting brown spots, softening fine lines and wrinkles, and promoting hair growth and wound healing.”

With their potential to stimulate overall improvements in your skin by boosting its healing process, it’s no wonder exosomes are everywhere. But don’t rush into anything without asking a derm. Especially when it comes to in-office treatments, which are promising but still being studied to prove their efficacy, Dr. Geddes says.

Ahead, Dr. Geddes takes us through the ins and outs of exosomes. Prepare to discover the best, derm-approved ways to use them—and what to look out for.

Dr. Elizabeth Geddes-Bruce

Dr. Geddes is a board-certified dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon at Westlake Dermatology, specializing in the practice of both cosmetic and medical dermatology. She views cosmetic dermatology as synergistic to a happy, healthy lifestyle and regularly counsels her patients in a balanced, natural approach to both cosmetic and medical dermatology.

What are exosomes?

Think of exosomes as little bundles of information that signal the cells in your body to perform certain functions. While we traditionally think of them as coming from stem cells, exosomes are produced by all types of cells and promote different functions. For example, when you have an injury, your platelets rush to the area that needs help and send signals via exosomes to start repairing the damage.

What are exosomes used for in skincare?

Exosomes have been used and are being studied for use in topical skincare products to promote regeneration and repair. To do so, the exosomes have to be:

 • safely derived (if coming from human tissue or verified blood bank sources)
 • stable enough to survive in a bottle on your bathroom counter
 • actually effective in their claims, without the potential to do any harm
Woman applying skincream.

Are exosomes FDA-approved?

Our FDA does an incredibly thorough job of regulating drugs and any claim of a product to treat disease falls under the purview of the FDA. There are currently no FDA-approved exosome products and any practice offering injectable exosomes to treat conditions with claims of improving disease should be approached with extreme caution.

It’s the Wild West out there with unregulated claims and cowboy practitioners, so always inquire about safety, efficacy, and tread with caution into this new field of regenerative medicine. Let the studies prove safety and efficacy before jumping on this bandwagon, despite the potential exciting effects. There is a particular brand of topical exosomes that I feel confident recommending to my patients called ( plated ).

Who can benefit from exosomes?

Anyone who sees the effects of aging or skin damage from pollution, sun damage, or generally not taking good care of yourself can likely see benefits from topical exosomes.

Woman applying makeup in mirror.

How long do exosomes take to work on the skin?

Most topical skin products start working immediately, but it takes time to visualize the transformation. I would recommend giving a six-week trial for all of your skincare products, including topical exosomes, as long as they aren’t irritating your skin.

Are there disadvantages of exosomes?

Exosomes are a novel product and therefore can be quite expensive. Before investing in this type of skincare, make sure to look for products with high-quality published data and rigorous safety standards. Make sure you understand that these products have the potential to influence the way cells work, and therefore their cell source is an important consideration in their safety. On the flip side, you also want to make sure you are using a product that is shelf-stable at room temperature so that you get what you paid for.

Dealing With Dry, Crepey Skin? An Expert on Why This Underrated Product Deserves a Comeback https://camillestyles.com/beauty/best-body-butters/ https://camillestyles.com/beauty/best-body-butters/#respond Fri, 15 Dec 2023 22:38:39 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=213328 Winter skin woes, be gone.

The post Dealing With Dry, Crepey Skin? An Expert on Why This Underrated Product Deserves a Comeback appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>
Baby, it’s cold outside! And while there are many joys to wintry weather, my skin doesn’t relish the season the same way my spirit does. But I’ll admit, there is a silver lining. I take the plummeting temps as an opportunity to spend even more time on my skin and body care routines. Summer’s skinimalism is out and in its place is winter skin that needs some serious nourishing. As a proactive step, I’m loading up on the best body butters for the ultimate skin-smoothing routine.

A wintertime skincare routine is essential. It doesn’t just keep flaky skin at bay, but it helps nourish your body’s microbiome and prevent premature aging. Crepey, cracked skin is one thing, but fundamentally dehydrated skin is another. Thankfully, you can rehab parched skin with a little TLC—or a lot of body butter.

Mary Ralph Bradley using the best body butters.

What is body butter?

Body butter is the ultimate balm for dry skin. Full of vitamins A and E and omega-3 fatty acids, it helps rejuvenate skin elasticity to fight premature aging. All these nourishing vitamins and fatty acids keep your skin cell membranes healthy to lock in moisture and create a protective barrier around the layers of your skin.

But is a body butter suitable for everyone? The thick, occlusive formulas of body butters deeply nourish skin—but can they clog your pores? Some people shy away from body butters for fear of too much of a good thing. To get to the bottom of it, I spoke to a skincare expert who happens to be the founder of my personal favorite body butter brands. Naa-Sakle Akuete, CEO & Founder of Eu’Genia Shea, a family-founded brand dedicated to empowering women through the sale of raw shea butter.

Read on for all you need to know before diving into the wide and moisturizing world of body butter. From the best ingredients to incorporating body butter into your routine, we’re getting into the nitty-gritty. Plus, scroll to the end to find the right body butter for you.

Body Butter Versus Body Cream

Body lotions, butters, and creams, oh my! How do you tell the difference—and how do you pick which one to use?

“Body butter has a concentrated balm-like consistency that deeply moisturizes and is used mainly on target areas of concern,” says Akuete. “A cream has a lotion-like consistency and can be more readily spread onto the skin.”

The Best Ingredient to Look For

Akuete says to focus on non-comedogenic ingredients, such as unrefined shea butter. “The refining process strips the shea of its natural color, scent, and often vitamins,” she notes.

Other nourishing ingredients to look for include:

 • Jojoba Butter
 • Cupuaçu Butter
 • Cocoa Butter
 • Coconut Oil
 • Argan Oil
 • Honey
 • Phytosterols (a type of plant-based oil)
The best body butters.

Ingredients to Avoid

Stray from pore-clogging ingredients, says Akuete, as well as those that can irritate the skin. Specifically, this looks like:

 • Fragrance + Parfum
 • Parabens
 • Phthalates
 • Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA)
 • Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS)

Who should use a body butter?

If you’re new to body butter, get ready to revel in all the hydration. Trust: there’s always room for a body butter in your routine.

“Body butter can be used by everyone,” says Akuete. “Especially those with intense skin concerns like eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis. Even people with oily skin and acne can benefit from using body butter, so long as the products don’t clog pores.”

When to Use Body Butter in Your Routine

Body butter locks in moisture, so it’s best used directly after a shower—or following a long soak in the bath. You can also use it on any especially dry areas whenever they need some love. Think elbows, hands, knees, and heels.

“I use Eu’Genia body butters when I’ve gotten out of the shower or washed my hands,” says Akuete. “The Eu’Genia balms came in especially handy when I was pregnant with my daughter—my belly is completely stretch mark free!”

The holidays have been here for a minute, and if you aren’t already in the midst of festive mayhem, then I’m sure it’s about to sneak up on you. (Like, tomorrow!) Between the parties, planning, and all the presents to buy, our plates are full. And with all the activity comes a packed social calendar. Sure, it’s a lot to manage, but I’m not going to lie—after a few years of engaging solely online, I’m more than a little excited to get dressed up. Thankfully, with a solid capsule wardrobe of heavy-hitting winter basics, your cold-weather mood board is well within reach.

The Best Cozy and Elegant Winter Basics

Our winter basics are those you continue to go back to on a seasonal basis. What to Wear: Coffee and Holiday Shopping With Friends

Every holiday season merits a weekend day full of catching on your holiday gifting list and connecting with friends over a cuppa. For these festive occasions, the focus is on comfort while still incorporating pieces into your ensemble that guarantee compliments. A tailored blazer, cozy but flattering pant, and statement accessories complete the formula. It’s easygoing while still garnering a solid spot on your feed.

The Blazer

The trick to selecting a timeless blazer is opting for one that moves with the seasons. Your best bet is to go for structure, but with enough give that you can layer dresses, sweaters, and the like underneath. It’s the easiest, chicest addition to any closet.

The Tailored Pant

IYKYK: Quince’s ultra-stretch ponte pant is a study in blending comfort with style. And because the brand is known for offering quality pieces at an accessible price, you’re welcome to select as many colors as you’d like (the burgundy and olive are my other two faves). But as far as pants that do everything for you—nothing beats Cartolina’s Hallie Pant. I’m wearing the “saddle” colorway above, and I can say with certainty: I’ve never loved a pant more. The high rise and elongating slim leg is beyond flattering—and yes, they do feel like yoga pants. (Tip: these run big, you’ll want to size down.) Your wardrobe of winter basics isn’t complete without them.

The Understated Statement Necklace

It’s a paradox, but true—we all need a necklace that completes the outfit while subtly making its presence known. I’m wearing the Banana Republic cubic zirconia piece above and love its classic, just-sparkly-enough appeal. Or, create a little more interest in your arsenal of winter basics by opting for a layered piece that still seamlessly ties in with whatever you have on.

The Statement Bag

‘Tis the season for top-handled bags. Mini, but mighty, these statement bags don’t simply make space for the essentials, but also offer a pop of interest for any look. When I’m not pairing my favorite Melie Bianco Cici bag with this exact blazer + pant + necklace formula, I love making it the grounding piece of a monochrome white or black fit. Streamlined and chic.

Camille Styles winter basics.

What to Wear: The Casual Family Gathering

The key to dressing for family hangs is to go for an elevated comfy look. You don’t want to look like you didn’t try, but you also want to be comfortable enough to roll up your sleeves in the kitchen, play on the floor with little ones, and have something flexible enough to win at a competitive game of charades. Consider these your go-to options for an effortlessly cool look.

The Chunky Sweater

If you have a curvy body type, my recommendation would be to go with a cropped option to define your waistline or to pair it with a high-waisted pant while doing a casual front tuck. This lets you show off your shape even while adding a little volume from the chunky knit.

The Perfect Jeans

When it comes to finding the perfect jeans, trust that with a higher price tag comes everything you’re looking for: comfort, quality, and a beyond-flattering look. The good news is that you don’t need anything more than a few go-to pairs for endless outfit combinations. I love a high-waisted bootcut in a darker wash for a universally perfect fit. Again, I’m giving you classic pieces that will never go out of style, so you can feel good about investing in your favorite.

The Cozy Slide

These Jenni Kayne mules went viral for a reason. They’re the perfect laid-back but still elevated alternative to a classic heel. With the pointed heel and elongated shape, they’re flattering for anyone and pair perfectly with every outfit. Cozy slides are a simple way to upgrade your cozy-casual Christmas outfit. Or, if you really want to lean into the coziness this season, the UGG Tazz slipper is a no-brainer.

What to Wear: Christmas Eve at Home

The Cardigan

If you run hot and can’t commit to a sweater indoors, cardigans are a solid solution. Layer it with a silk tank top or over a—yep, you guessed it!—slip dress. You can also roll with it and commit with only a bra underneath. Either way, a cardigan is a win-win. Go with a longer cardigan if you want to keep it comfy, or try a cropped style to show off or create the look of curves.

The Silk Skirt

If you’re not yet sold on the silk dress, give the silk skirt a try. It’s an easy yet comfortable way to elevate your look at home without sacrificing comfort. It comes in a plethora of lengths, but my go-to is the mini. I like to pull out the mini for a night out and keep it classy with a slightly longer hemline for dinner with the family. It looks good with a chunky boot or delicate heel, too. You can keep a slip skirt in your rotation all year, but it’ll be a standout during the holidays.

The Hair Bow

Even Pinterest predicted it—bows are everywhere. They’re the perfect holiday accessory, and the good news is that you’ll be able to keep yours pinned tight throughout the next year. I have The Kate Bow in both black and cream. It’s the perfect Gossip Girl moment to literally tie together any outfit. (The collection of hair accessories was made in collaboration with NYC-based entrepreneur Kira Jones—seriously, her winter basics styling is iconic.)

What to Wear: Festive Holiday Parties

When it comes to holiday parties, there are a few materials and textures that will instantly put you in the mood to celebrate. I love the impact of velvet-everything. It goes beyond monochromatic and creates an instant, luxurious appeal. Make a statement in a pants-and-blazer combo or go classic in a midi dress. No matter how you incorporate it into your holiday dressing, you’re sure to look put together in velvet.

Velvet Everything

Nothing says the holidays quite like velvet—it can instantly dress up any outfit. One of my favorite velvet pairings is with satin or silk. The juxtaposition of the two fabrics creates such a luxurious vibe. Accessories are always an easy way to add some velvet to your wardrobe, too.

A Fur Topper

Go luxe on luxe with velvet and faux fur—or keep things *relatively* simple by making it your outfit’s go-to statement piece. However you choose to style your faux fur coat, there’s no denying: the material is everywhere this season. And thankfully, there are now plenty of options for beautiful styles at accessible prices.

Metallic Accessories

All that glitters isn’t just gold—it’s also silver, rose gold, and champagne. In a world of metallics, you will always shine. With metallics, I like to follow the rule that less is more. They can be intense in a good way, so use them sparingly.

What to Wear: A Cozy Holiday Morning

For me, holiday mornings are all about keeping it comfortable. I’m talking soft pajamas, warm robes, and elevated loungewear. Whether you’re the matching pajama kind of family or you like to lean more luxe, you can always come back to these pieces. One thing is for sure: you’re bound to create special memories to look back on all while being extra cozy. This lets you focus on what matters most: the magic and joy of your family.

The Winter-White Set

Don’t get me wrong, I love matching sets in all colors and prints (particularly if you’re coordinating with the fam on Christmas Day). But nothing says classic quite like a winter-white set. Whoever called white after Labor Day a fashion faux-pas certainly never encountered the captivating impact of a luminous sweater-and-pants (or skirt!) pairing. Bonus: The look is elevated enough to take out of the house—but you’ll still feel like you’re wearing pajamas.

Live-In Activewear

If a soft set doesn’t hold up to all you have planned on the big day, let me provide an alternative: elevated activewear. My family has long been the type to venture out for a snowy hike once the presents are opened and we’ve drained the coffee pot. If that sounds familiar, buttery-soft leggings and an oversized half-zip are the way to go. Bonus: If movement is at the top of your list of 2024 intentions, a cute workout set always makes keeping the commitment easier.

Warm Footwear

Of course, nothing completes a Christmas-at-home ensemble quite like the coziest socks or slippers. Thankfully, brands that do basics to a tee like SKIMS understand that just because we’re prioritizing comfort doesn’t mean we don’t also want to look cute. With the options below, both are 100% possible.

The post I Tried PRFM As An Alternative to Under-Eye Filler—Here Are My Results appeared first on Camille Styles.

Editor’s note: This story highlights the intensive skincare treatment, PRFM. Videos below show the cosmetic procedure in process, which includes the use of needles.

Growing up under the harsh Australian sun, you’re taught to apply and reapply sunscreen from a very early age. (The Slip, Slop, Slap campaign is ingrained in my memory!) So, since the spry age of 14, I have taken a fairly disciplined approach to skincare. While I wouldn’t say I’m a guinea pig when it comes to beauty treatments, I’m the first to raise my hand when an exciting advancement in technology comes on the market. My goal? Prevention over cure.

This philosophy also extends to skincare. If you’re not taking care of your skin health with a daily routine (vitamin C, retinol, and sunscreen are key!), then you’re really not going to see the best results from a professional treatment. I have spoken to SO many estheticians and dermatologists over the years, and while they have their favorite laser, peel, injectable, etc. they all say the best results occur when you have a consistent at-home skincare routine. Not a single beauty treatment I’ve tried would have the efficacy it did if I didn’t practice diligent skincare.

With that disclaimer in mind, let’s get to the newest game-changing treatment I can’t stop talking about: PRFM—i.e., Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix.

Sacha Strebe PRFM treatment.
A few days after PRFM.

I Tried PRFM—Here’s What to Know

Now that I am 43, I wanted an alternative to filler. It’s not that I’ve stopped having filler or think that it’s bad. On the contrary, I love a little baby filler to help with the inevitable bone loss on my face. (I had my first under-eye filler at 37.) That said, you want to be careful not to overdo it, and I was starting to feel like my under-eyes still needed a little extra support to strengthen the thin, crepey skin.

So I went to see my favorite and most trusted RN, medical aesthetic provider and founder of The Things We Do, Vanessa Lee. She also did my cheek, lower jawline, and brow thread lift a few years ago—which is still looking snatched thanks to the new collagen production and skin strengthening as a result. Lee and her team (she trains them all personally) is the ONLY person I would recommend to administer threads in LA.

Given the amazing results of my PRFM, I think they’re a great alternative for those either looking to enhance their under-eye filler or want an alternative option. I did have a little bruising afterward but nothing I couldn’t cover up with makeup. And as you can see, my skin around that area looks healthy and strong.

Not sure if it’s right for you? I sat down with Lee after my treatment to get the lowdown on PRFM—how it works, healing time, cost, and so much more.

Vanessa Lee RN
Vanessa Lee, RN

Vanessa Lee is a medical aesthetic provider and founder of The Things We Do.

What is PRFM? What does it stand for and how did it become a cosmetic treatment?

PRFM stands for Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix. It’s a treatment that utilizes a concentrated form of your own blood’s platelets and growth factors to rejuvenate and enhance the appearance of the skin. PRFM is the next generation of PRP science. We can now use the growth factors from your own blood to create a thin, gel-like matrix of growth factors and place it into your thinning tissue. Compared to PRP, PRFM is much more concentrated, allowing for greater longevity and better results.

How does PRFM work?

PRFM works by harnessing the body’s natural healing and rejuvenating processes. It’s 100% natural. The procedure involves drawing a small amount of the patient’s blood, which is then processed by centrifuge to separate the platelets and growth factors from the rest of the blood components. We like to call it liquid gold!

This concentrated PRFM is then injected into specific areas of the skin, promoting collagen production, tissue regeneration, and improved skin texture and tone.

Once your blood has been processed by centrifuge to extract the platelets and growth factors, the skin is prepped for injection.

When would you recommend PRFM to someone?

PRFM is great for anyone wanting to enhance their skin’s texture, tone, and elasticity. It’s especially useful for addressing fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and signs of aging or damage. PRFM can also complement other aesthetic treatments. It can be done by itself or to complement fillers and/or threads.

PRFM is especially useful for addressing fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and signs of aging or damage.

Who is the right candidate for PRFM?

Almost anyone! The right candidate for PRFM is typically someone in good general health who wants to address skin concerns such as fine lines, wrinkles, and texture irregularities. It can be suitable for various ages, but it’s more commonly considered by individuals in their late 20s to 50s. It’s also pregnancy-safe! Those with certain medical conditions, blood disorders, or severe skin issues might not be suitable candidates. A consultation with a qualified provider is necessary to determine candidacy.

Once prepped, the concentrated PRFM is then injected into specific areas of the skin (in this case, the area of concern is under the eye) to help promote collagen production, tissue regeneration, and improved skin texture and tone.

Why is PRFM so effective?

PRFM’s effectiveness is attributed to the growth factors and platelets it delivers to the skin. They stimulate collagen production, improve blood circulation, and enhance tissue regeneration, resulting in smoother, more youthful-looking skin.

Are you seeing more people opt for PRFM versus filler?

Sometimes PRFM is recommended as the first step in a patient’s beauty plan and filler as the second step a few months later. PRFM’s job is to help support and thicken skin tissue before it’s the filler’s turn to provide the structural reinforcement for facial harmony. Think of PRFM as the glaze to facial balancing.

When would you recommend filler over PRFM?

Dermal fillers are recommended when volume restoration is the primary goal, such as plumping up hollow cheeks or enhancing the lips. Fillers provide immediate results by adding volume to specific areas, whereas PRFM focuses on overall skin improvement and rejuvenation.

How do you know PRFM is right for you?

PRFM might be right for you if you’re looking to improve skin texture, tone, and overall appearance without adding significant volume. We always recommend a consultation to determine if PRFM aligns with your goals and if it’s the right treatment for you.

You are always at the forefront of new technology and procedures in cosmetics. When did you first learn about PRFM and how long have you been offering this treatment at The Things We Do?

PRFM caught our attention as an innovative cosmetic approach, and we swiftly integrated it into our practice at The Things We Do a few years ago. Our decision to offer PRFM was driven by our commitment to providing our patients with safe and effective treatments that align with the desire for natural-looking results. PRFM resonated with our philosophy of utilizing the body’s own resources for rejuvenation, and we recognized its potential to address a wide range of skin concerns.

Where can you get PRFM?

The most popular treatment areas include the face, under-eyes, neck, décolletage, and hands. PRFM can improve skin texture, reduce fine lines, and minimize acne scars. It’s also super effective at tightening and plumping the skin.

How long does the treatment take?

One PRFM treatment typically takes about 60 minutes, depending on the treatment area.

When can you expect to see results?

Results from PRFM treatment become noticeable gradually over several weeks as collagen production is stimulated and tissue regeneration occurs. Over several months, you’ll notice the results continue to improve.

What is the downtime?

PRFM treatments usually involve minimal downtime. Some redness, swelling, and bruising at the injection sites may occur, but these side effects are generally mild and temporary.

How should you take care of your skin post-PRFM?

After a PRFM treatment, be sure to:

 • protect your skin from the sun
 • use gentle cleansers
 • stay hydrated with mild moisturizers
 • avoid intense activities
 • skip makeup initially
 • follow your provider’s guidelines

How long does it last?

The duration of PRFM results varies from person to person, but most can expect improvements to last between 1-2 years. Maintenance treatments can help you get the most out of your results.

Do you need a follow-up appointment?

A follow-up appointment is often scheduled 4-6 weeks after treatment to monitor your progress and discuss any additional treatments or adjustments if needed.

How many treatments do you recommend?

The number of recommended treatments varies based on your specific needs. Some achieve desired results with a single treatment, while others might benefit from a series of treatments spaced a few months apart.

How much does it cost?

The cost of PRFM treatments can vary widely based on factors such as location and the number of treatment areas.

Sacha Strebe one month after prfm.
One month post-treatment.

What questions should you ask yourself before getting PRFM?

Before getting PRFM, it’s important to consider your specific skin concerns, your expectations for results, and your commitment to follow the post-treatment care instructions. Evaluate your overall health and any medical conditions that might affect your eligibility for the treatment.

How do you find a good provider?

Finding a qualified provider is crucial for safe and effective PRFM treatment. Ask about their training and experience with PRFM. Be sure to find someone who will truly advocate for you.

What are possible complications that can result from PRFM?

Complications from PRFM treatments are typically rare. However, potential risks can include infection, bruising, and adverse reactions to the injection. To avoid these issues, choose a reputable provider, be transparent about your medical history, and follow pre- and post-treatment instructions.

If you experience any unusual or severe side effects, consult your provider as soon as possible.

When beauty founder Tata Harper was young, her family passed down their beauty secrets. One of them was the power of using an oil cleanser. You may have heard of double cleansing, but it’s not just another buzzy beauty trend that will die out or get debunked. It’s an ancient ritual that has been treasured for centuries in many cultures. And now, oil cleansers are everywhere.

“Double-cleansing dates back as far as the 14th century and originated in Asia,” Tata Harper told me. “Women would use a cleansing oil to remove their heavy makeup and follow with a foaming cleanser. This practice has been a staple in many Asian beauty routines for centuries and was introduced to me through my beauty-obsessed grandmother and mother in Colombia.”

“Oil cleansing is for everyone.”

Oil cleansers, like many good things, are often underrated or misunderstood. You might be hesitant to add another step to your beauty routine. Or, you might wonder can another cleanser really make a difference?

But once you start oil cleansing, you won’t want to go back. Cleansing is the first step of your routine — you want to make sure you’re doing it right. Otherwise, all the fancy serums and beauty trends won’t make a difference.

The potential benefits of oil cleansing include:

 • Lifts excess sebum
 • Prevents breakouts
 • Gently clears makeup and SPF
 • Detoxes clogged pores
 • Nourishes skin
 • Prevents dryness
 • Removes dry, dead skin flakes

To learn more, I spoke to Tata Harper about why we should all start oil cleansing. Then, I tried some of the best oil cleansers for myself. Here’s everything you need to know.

Founder of Tata Harper Skincare

What is an oil cleanser?

Oil Cleansing is the practice of washing your face with an oil-based cleanser rather than a traditional cleanser. It’s commonly utilized in the form of double cleansing which involves using an oil cleanser followed by a more traditional cleanser.

An oil cleanser is amazing for removing that first layer of buildup on your skin like dirt, oil, and SPF. It’s also a fantastic makeup remover that nourishes your skin while cleansing, unlike some other harsh makeup removers that rely on synthetic ingredients to cleanse skin.

Are oil cleansers better than other cleansers?

I don’t think it’s a matter of better or worse, but rather personal preference and skin care goals. I think oil cleansing is most effective when it is used in tandem with a more traditional cleanser to really make sure your skin is clean and you aren’t just going through the motions of washing your face.

Is there a type of oil cleanser for each skin type? Can oily skin use an oil cleanser?

Oil cleansers are suitable for all skin types and actually an excellent choice for oily skin types. It’s a common misconception that using an oil cleanser with already oily skin with exacerbate the issue when it is actually incredibly beneficial in controlling oily skin. When your skin is oily, it’s often a signal that your skin is craving moisture and needs this extra nourishment and care.

Is oil cleansing good for pores?

Yes! Oil cleansing is great for pores because it lifts excess sebum, the oily substance your skin produces that causes acne when not properly addressed. Using a cleansing oil helps dissolve this oily, waxy substance and other debris left on the face from the day.

double cleansing products

Who should avoid oil cleansing?

Oil cleansing is for everyone. Oftentimes people with oily skin think that using a cleansing oil will increase their oiliness, but it’s actually the opposite. When the skin is overproducing oil, it means that it is craving nourishment and hydration, which makes using an oil cleanser an excellent choice.

How often should I oil cleanse?

I use our Nourishing Oil Cleanser every single night. It’s my first step in my skincare routine so I can be sure I’m removing all of the build-up that has accumulated on my skin. Oil cleansing is suitable for everyday use and can be used in place of a traditional makeup remover or micellar water.

What are the best ingredients in cleansing oil? Are there any ingredients to avoid?

The best ingredients to utilize in cleansing oils are non-comedogenic carrier oils like Sunflower Seed, Jojoba, and Grapeseed oil. It’s important to include only non-comedogenic ingredients to prevent any clogged pores. Antioxidants like Vitamin E and Green Tea Oil are also amazing ingredients to formulate cleansing oils with because they help to protect the skin from free radical damage and provide additional healing skin benefits. Botanical extracts like our farm-grown calendula help soothe and nourish skin when included in cleansing oils.

I Tried It — Which Oil Cleansers are worth the hype

I’ve been using oil cleansers for years and I’ve developed a small obsession. And, subsequently, a small collection. I oil cleanse with a different cleanser every night depending on my skin’s needs: removing makeup, clearing breakouts, or reviving tight (and admittedly, over-exfoliated) skin. And on a low-maintenance night, I even just treat my skin to a quick oil cleanse and leave it at that. Whether you’re oil cleanser-curious or looking for a new oil cleanser to replace your latest empty, here are some of the best oil cleansers for every skin type.

Best Oil Cleanser for Dull or Dehydrated Skin — Tata Harper Nourishing Oil Cleanser

This is the oil cleanser I turn to when my skin looks dull and feels dehydrated. Its blend of vitamins and botanicals makes my skin feel clean, without stripping it. I especially like this for dehydrated skin, since it includes barrier-building ingredients like jojoba oil and squalane, plus antioxidants for brighter, stronger skin.
