To be or not to be… practical? That is the (ultimate beauty) question. The plight of all makeup wearers has always been the choice between practicality and aesthetics—especially when it comes to lipstick. We’ve adapted, of course. Carrying mini mirrors in our purses, constantly reapplying and blotting, and counting on our friends (the good ones) to tell us if we have any smudges on our teeth. But does it have to be this way? What if we could go out without digging for the right shade of lipstick to replace the coat now smudged on our coffee cup? Enter: the best lip stains that get the job done.

Lip stains are not new, but they’re increasingly becoming the lip product of choice. We’re entering a new age where the best makeup is made to suit our lifestyles, not get in the way of them. From multi-tasking products to trends that celebrate what we actually look like, it was only a matter of time before we swapped out smudgy lipsticks for long-lasting color choices fit for all skin tones.

Lip trends are no longer just about the color du jour. The best products prioritize hydrating ingredients and powerful pigments. The matte trend gave us long-wearing products, but the trade-off was dry lips. The enduring glazed lip trend offers hydration, but not the transfer-free pouts that work for our everyday lives. So if you’re seeking products that nourish your lips and last through the day, read on to discover the best lip stains on the market.

The Difference Between Lipsticks and Lip Stains

There used to be just lip balms and lipsticks. Now we’re spoiled by choice. Lipsticks are your classic creamy makeup staple. But now there are also liquid lipsticks, which give you the same coverage without the waxy coating.

So, what sets the lip stains, oils, and tints taking over the beauty sphere apart? Let’s investigate.

 • Lip Tints: A sheer color option for a more effortless look.
 • Lip Gloss: A sticky gloss coating that gives your lips a shiny surface.
 • Lip Oils: An oil-based product with a liquid, glazed finish.
 • Lip Stains: A long-lasting liquid that absorbs into the skin.

What makes a lip stain long-lasting?

Unlike other lip products, lip stains don’t just sit on top of your lips. They absorb into your skin to create a long-lasting pigment that doesn’t budge. Since the pigment is not on the surface of your skin, it’s transfer-proof.

Ingredients to Look For in a Lip Stain

The best lip stains are as nourishing as they are pigmented. Look for ingredients that give your skin moisture and lasting hydration, such as:

 • Jojoba oil
 • Shea butter
 • Coconut oil
 • Squalane
 • Hyaluronic acid
 • Beeswax
 • Honey
 • Aloe vera
 • Petroleum jelly
 • Avocado
 • Vitamin E

How to Apply a Lip Stain

The right lip stain goes—and stays—on smooth. But preparing your pout doesn’t hurt. Some lip stains go on with just one swipe or a couple for more buildable coverage. Others, you have to swipe or peel away.

Whatever type of lip product you choose, proper lip care can boost your lip health:

 • Use a lip scrub weekly. To avoid your lip product flaking or sticking to dry patches on your skin, add an exfoliating lip scrub to your routine to give yourself a clean slate.
 • Try a nightly lip mask. The best way to hydrate your lips is to drench them with a nightly lip mask. You’ll wake up to hydrated lips, which create a healthy canvas for your daily products.
 • Choose your lip balm wisely. Did you know that some lip balms slowly suck the moisture out of your lips? Choose one with hydrating ingredients like natural oils to nourish your lips instead of just applying a synthetic glossy coating.
 • Remove with an oil-based cleanser. How you take off your lip stain is just as important as how you put it on. By gently wiping (don’t rub or scrub!) with an oil-based cleanser, you can easily remove pigment without drying out your lips.

I couldn’t pay attention to anything my friend across the brunch table was saying. I was too distracted by the long, enviable, Bambi-like eyelashes fluttering before me. “I hope this is OK to ask, but your eyelashes… are they… ” Before I could finish, she whispered it like a secret, “Latisse.” Since its FDA approval in 2008, the Allergan product has been the gold standard for women wondering: how to grow eyelashes. (Seriously, those Brook Shields commercials are cemented in my mind.)

“Latisse’s active ingredient is bimatoprost, a prostaglandin analog, which has been shown in clinical studies to make eyelashes grow longer, thicker, and darker,” shares board-certified dermatologist Dr. Hadley King. “It works by lengthening the time the follicle stays in the growth phase.”

But even 15 years later, Latisse is still only available with a prescription. So for anyone looking for alternatives—and answers on how to make eyelashes grow—we tapped Dr. King. In return, she answered with all the tips, secrets, products, serums, treatments, and natural remedies to boost eyelash growth.

The Best Lash Growth Serums

Hands down, the best option is Latisse. But if you’re looking to try something over-the-counter, eyelash serums from brands like GrandeLASH and Dr. Lara Devgan regularly earn rave reviews.

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Another Over-the-Counter Lash Growth Option

Though Dr. King generally warns against over-the-counter cosmetics advertised as increasing the length and fullness of eyebrows and lashes (their efficacy has not been critically evaluated), if you are using a product, be sure to apply them to a completely cleansed lash line with an equally clean brush.

“Latisse provides disposable single-use applicator brushes because this is the safest way to ensure minimum risk of bacterial or fungal contamination and infection,” Dr. King notes.

The dermatologist does point out another promising option when it comes to what makes eyelashes grow. However, the potential side effects may outweigh the gains.

Based on a 2012 Journal of Dermatology study, “Rogaine appears to modestly increase eyebrow growth and is comparable to Latisse,” says Dr. King, who notes that a subsequent study concluded that Rogaine can be a safe and effective treatment for brows.

“However, Rogaine often causes irritation when applied to the scalp, and the eyelid skin area is generally more sensitive, so this is also possible when used for the eyelashes,” she adds. “Side effects from applying Rogaine to the eyebrow area include burning, dryness, itchiness, redness, and scaling.”

Go the All-Natural Route

Looking to avoid chemicals and the Sephora fuss altogether? A potential eyelash growth aid can likely be found somewhere in your home. Vitamin-dense products like aloe vera gels, olive oil, and green tea can reportedly support strong, long eyelash growth while moisturizing agents like shea butter and coconut oil nourish strands and prevent breakage.

But the most prominent home remedy for stimulating eyelash growth is castor oil. And while no studies have been able to prove castor oil causes hair growth, it certainly can’t hurt.

“Castor oil is not damaging to the hair and can provide some conditioning that improves the flexibility of the hair fiber. Castor oil has also been shown in a study to increase hair luster,” shares Dr. King.

Consider a Lash Lift or Perm

The trendy treatment has all the permanence of eyelash extensions without damaging adhesives. Plus, it cuts down on the use of potentially damaging curling devices. (Even Camille is a lash lift regular.)

Protect Your Eyelashes

It doesn’t matter how much attention and care (or money) you put into your lashes if you aren’t taking preventative measures to keep them healthy. Because really, when it comes to what makes eyelashes grow, what don’t do can be just as crucial as the healthy steps you take to promote eyelash growth.

 • Remove mascara before bed so lashes don’t break off onto your pillow.
 • Speaking of pillows, consider a silk pillowcase for less lash-compromising friction.
 • Limit the use of false eyelashes or eyelash extensions since adhesives may weaken lashes and cause breakage.
 • Regularly brush out your eyelashes to distribute natural oils.
 • Eat a healthy diet with plenty of protein, iron, and biotin.
 • Try a solid hair growth supplement (that extends to brows and eyelashes). Nutrifol is nutritionist-approved.

I’ve always been skeptical of any tinted beauty buy. The sub-par staying power and orange-y hues steered me away from where they sat on the Sephora shelves. Instead, I plastered on layers of foundation and concealer in hopes I would get the same, lit-from-within glow tinted products promised. Now, years later with hundreds of beauty products tested under my editor belt, I’m a proponent of makeup that doubles as skincare. (The best sunscreens are only the first step into a world of beauty-centric suncare.) Not only that, but because I seek to curate a simple and succinct routine, I’ve found myself experimenting with the best tinted sunscreen. And readers, I love the results.

Tinted sunscreens have evolved. In 2023, expect multitasking products worthy of your hard-working summer skincare routine. The best tinted sunscreen for you offers lightweight summer coverage while prioritizing personalized sun protection. And as tinted sunscreens become more popular, brands are looking to differentiate themselves. Whether you prefer a subtle glow, concealer-like coverage, or serum-like skin tints—the best tinted sunscreen delivers.

The Best Tinted Sunscreen, According to Beauty Experts

But how do you know if your tinted sunscreen is providing enough sun protection? And are any of these 2-in-1 products too good to be true? For answers on what to look for as you shop tinted sunscreens, I spoke all things SPF with Scottsdale-based SkinSpirit Aesthetician and skin cancer survivor Kaylee Esplin. She encourages everyone to “shop smartly,” and warns that “tinted sunscreen and makeup products with SPF are not the same thing!”

I also tapped Rose-Marie Swift, makeup expert and founder of the beloved RMS Beauty for her tips on finding your best formula. “I have never found an SPF that I actually like, let alone love. Simple as that. From the unacceptable ingredients to the inability to layer with makeup and that ghoulish white cast, never have I loved an SPF… until now.” After creating the RMS SuperNatural Radiance Serum SPF 30, Swift wants everyone to be obsessed with their sunscreen. And a tinted product might be the way to go.

Together, the two experts provided full-spectrum coverage (pun intended) on how to find a tinted sunscreen that doubles down on sun protection and skin coverage—while, of course, keeping your look flawless.

What is tinted sunscreen?

Tinted sunscreen is an antidote to the dreaded white cast faux pas. While it offers the same protection as regular sunscreen, tinted formulations are pigmented to prevent any white residue. From sheer tints to makeup-like coverage, tinted sunscreens come in different degrees of pigments to fit your preference.

What to Look for in the Best Tinted Sunscreen

“Check the ingredient list to avoid potential irritants or allergens if you have sensitive skin,” says Esplin. “Also, consider the texture, non-comedogenicity (if you have acne-prone skin), and any additional benefits like moisturization or antioxidant properties based on your skin’s needs.”

As for its SPF properties, Esplin recommends looking for:

 • Physical blockers. Look for sunscreens that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, as they provide effective mineral protection and are generally well-tolerated by most skin types.
 • Broad-spectrum protection. You want a sunscreen that provides protection against both UVA and UVB rays (this is typically indicated on the label).
 • SPF value. Choose a sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or higher to ensure sufficient protection.

Swift looks for mineral (aka physical) sunscreen over chemical sunscreen. The tint helps prevent the white cast that sometimes comes with mineral formulas.

Usually, zinc oxide is the main ingredient in clean mineral sunscreens. “Zinc oxide rarely causes irritation on the skin, so it can be used on any skin type—even on those with sensitive skin,” says Rose-Marie. She recommends looking for non-nano zinc oxide. “Nano refers to nanometers. Nanoparticles are smaller than 100nm. It means the mineral zinc oxide is larger than 100nm and therefore won’t penetrate your skin.” As a result, the zinc oxide creates a physical shield against the sun without irritating or clogging pores.

According to Swifft, other specific ingredients to look for include:

 • Iron oxides and rose geranium extract provide blue light protection.
 • Mica reflects blue light.
Woman with glowy skin.

Tips for Applying Tinted Sunscreen

Swift recommends what she calls the two-finger method. “Squeeze one line of sunscreen onto your index finger from the base of the tip. Do the same on your middle finger and apply all over,” she advises. “This measurement will ensure enough product for adequate SPF coverage. Massage it into the face and neck as you would a moisturizer. And be sure to reapply every two hours.”

“Don’t forget to protect your lips!” Esplin adds. “My first diagnoses was in 2016, a Basal Cell Carcinoma located on the cupid’s bow portion of my upper lip—an area that most people forget to protect. It’s important to remember that even our lips are susceptible to sun damage and cancer! And the effectiveness of any sunscreen, tinted or not, also depends on proper application, using the recommended amount, and reapplying every two hours or more frequently if sweating or swimming.”

Should you wear regular sunscreen underneath tinted sunscreen?

According to Esplin, tinted sunscreen can be just as good as any other SPFs. “As long as your tinted sunscreen provides broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays and has an appropriate sun protection factor (SPF of at least 30), it can be as safe and effective as regular sunscreen.”

“A sunscreen with SPF 30 will protect you from around 97% of UVB rays, whereas an SPF of 50 means protection from about 98% of UVB rays,” says Swift. “Anything beyond SPF 50 makes very little difference in terms of risk of sun damage, and no sunscreens offer 100% protection from UVB rays. So we feel 30 SPF is sufficient.”

It blurs, creates radiance, corrects tone, and is an actual filter for the skin with just the right level of sun protection and skin-loving ingredients.”

The post 34 Summer Nail Trends You’re About to See Everywhere appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>
There’s so much to love about summer. Between the outdoor activities, al fresco dining, and beach vacations, it’s a perfect season. The only thing I could do without? Triple-digit temps. Though I do my best to brave even the hottest, sweatiest days, I always feel like summer limits my self-expression. I can’t stand to wear more than my most lightweight summer basics and I strip my beauty routine down to serums and sunscreen. But to take back my style personality, I’m going big with my summer nails.

Whether you keep your nails short or you prefer bold designs, there’s a summer nail trend for everyone. This season, the nail spectrum spans natural nudes to neons and everything in between. I’ve scoured social media to find the coolest nail trends by celebrity nail artists and crafty DIYers alike. Bookmark this page and save for summer nail inspo that you can take to the salon or try your hand at (!) yourself.

Featured image from our interview with Babba Rivera by Belathée Photography.

Barbiecore

No doubt, Barbiecore is the hottest trend of the summer. Pink is the shade, Barbie is the reason. To me, Barbiecore is a reminder to add some whimsy to your life and do something fun for your inner child. Nothing says that like all pink everything—including your summer nails.

Pink Soda

Another way to pull off the pink trend is to channel your favorite summer drinks. This glittery texture imitates the perfect fizz of a strawberry lemonade or a fun summer spritz.

Rosé All Day

Short, nude-esque nails are all the rage. (We have the quiet luxury trend to thank.) This pinkish, rosé-inspired hue is perfect for a summer vacay.

True Nude

For a truly classic look, you can’t go wrong with a glossy nude. And this summer, you’ll be seeing them everywhere.

Milky Pastel

Pastels are back, mostly in milky shades. I can already picture enjoying these candy-coated summer nails while savoring a soft serve on the beach.

Classic Red

Red hot for summer: this spicy classic. Go for a firey shade or a more tomato hue to channel the latest Italian summer trend—#TomatoGirl—for your vacation nails.

Strawberry Summer

A fun twist on a classic red nail is this easy-to-DIY strawberry look. We’re loving strawberries on everything this year—nails are no exception.

Fruit Salad

Adding fun pop art on your nails is like a low-stakes version of a cute sticker tattoo. This year, fruit salad decals are all the rage. Your mani will be the star of any potluck.

Cherry

All the best fruits are in season, and what better way to celebrate the harvest than with your summer nails? Adding a cherry detail to a French manicure (or really any other look) is a fun summer flair.

Gingham

Channel this classic summer vibe with a breezy gingham print. Inspired by picnic baskets and summer dresses, this whimsical look works in every color.

Flower Crown

Flower crowns may be passé, but flower crown nails are a fresh take on florals. Cap off a colorful French mani with a string of flower details.

Tenniscore

Tenniscore is everywhere this summer. On or off the courts, we’re channeling the preppy style this season. Give your green nails—which were trending this spring—an upgrade with this tenniscore twist.

Mermaidcore

If watching The Little Mermaid live-action at the start of summer inspired you as much as it did us, you won’t be surprised by the resurgence of mermaidcore. Anything that feels ethereal and underwater goes for this one—bonus points for glitter and iridescent sparkles.

Aquamarine

For the ultimate throwback mermaid reference, channel the beautiful beachy vibes with an aquamarine blue. You could say we’ve got a blue crush on this shade.

Sky Blue

Now that we’re out of the June gloom, the skies are finally crystal clear and your nails can follow suit. One of the most popular colors this summer is sky blue. Just head to your local salon for the proof.

Head in the Clouds

Even if the skies are clear, soft clouds on your nails are an easy DIY that makes any color even more interesting.

Stardust

This one’s for anyone who checks CoStar daily and asks everyone they meet for their star sign. Clear summer skies mean a night sky full of stars. It’s the perfect reason to add star decals to your nails.

Pearls

The world is your oyster—a truth your summer nails know well. If you’re a fan of adding 3D ornaments to your nails, pearls are an elegant way to get in on this trend. Quiet luxury meets ornate nail art. It’s the best of both worlds.

Crystals

Another opulent way to adorn your nails is to add crystals. A dusting of clear crystals will elevate even the most simple summer looks.

Gemstones

Take the crystal trend one step further with colorful gemstones. To make it even more personal, research your birthstones and use those to inspire the look.

Glitter Glam

Take it back to basics and add a glitter coat to your nails. Get the glam look without the upkeep of 3D nail jewelry.

Disco Nails

Is your disco ball your favorite piece of home décor? Do you always take a video of every disco ball you encounter on a night out? Same—and this nail trend is for us. It’s perfect for summer concerts, from Eras (hello, mirrorball) to Renaissance (disco tips!).

Stained Glass

This colorful take on the disco trend will make your nails look like stained glass. It’s funky, cool, and guaranteed to catch everyone’s eyes.

Fairycore

Fairycore is the ethereal extension of cottagecore that we’re totally here for. Exploring nature all summer long? Do it with fairy-inspired nails. Think: mossy, earthy colors with colorful accents.

Rainbow Tips

One of the biggest rainbow trends we saw this June was a subtle rainbow tip. Good news: this look is going strong all summer.

Ombre Tips

New takes on the classic French are all the rage. And while ombre hair and ombre clothing are trends of the past, a subtle ombre gradient on your nails is cool and classy.

Neon Gradients

Want to take your ombre look to the next level? Try mixing neon gradients with unexpected colors for a bold beach nail look.

Neon Edges

Another way to try neon is a neon outline around a nude nail. Balance.

Neon Texture

Textured details are a cool way to embrace 3D nails without intense upkeep and protruding nail jewelry. Neon lines and textured curves are huge this summer for a playful look.

Chrome Flame

Embrace the chrome trend and the texture trend with these chrome flame nails. Add some edge to your look while manifesting many nights spent beside outdoor fire pits.

Snakes

The snake trend is a simple DIY with a super cool result. Whether you add snake decals or just stick to embracing snake print, it’s a cool way to give the illusion of texture and add a funky print to a plain color.

Butterflies

A classic for summer. Channel afternoons at the botanical gardens with butterfly details on your nails.

Cowboy

The cowboy and western aesthetic is here to stay. Bring back cow print everything. I’m fully here for it.

Is foundation dead? It seems that foundation as we used to know it—the non-negotiable, full-coverage end all, be all of makeup looks—might be. Gen Z favors beauty trends like no-makeup makeup or the #CleanLook, which feature skin tints and dabs of concealer in lieu of a full face of foundation. And as more people embrace skin neutrality (accepting your skin for all its blemishes, age spots, and fine lines), there’s less of a need to cover up all of our imperfections.

Thankfully, beauty brands are experimenting with new, better foundation options. Enter: stick foundation. Like a bronzer or any favored multi-stick, this tube application is smooth and satisfying. The best stick foundations in the beauty aisles are inspiring more shoppers to try these convenient, cake-free coverage options.

Intrigued? Thought so. Read on to discover what to look for in a stick foundation and where to find the best ones.

What We Love:

 • Buildable, long-lasting coverage
 • Non-toxic formulation
 • Lightweight coverage
 • Hydrating

What We Don’t:

 • Honestly? It’s hard to find fault with a multi-stick that comes in a range of shades, is formulated with skin-loving ingredients, and doesn’t irritate even acne-prone skin. It’s an easy yes!

Merit The Minimalist Perfecting Complexion Stick

This versatile product is your one-stop replacement for both your foundation and concealer. Its breathable formula contains fatty acids to soften your skin and lock in moisture, plus sea daffodil extracts to treat pigmentation and dark spots while you cover them up.

Best Sheer: Ogee Sculpted Complexion Stick

I’ll admit, I was influenced to buy this product from an Instagram ad that touted effortless, summer makeup. But here’s the kicker: it actually delivered. I’ve been packing this in my toiletries bag for travel and it’s so easy to swipe on and use a makeup brush to blend for sheer color that reduces pores and adds a little glow. My one caveat is that skin needs to be very well moisturized before applying to avoid a cakey or patchy texture. — Camille, Editor-in-Chief

What We Love:

 • Easy for on-the-go application
 • Provides sheer glow and color

What We Don’t:

 • Can wear cakey if skin isn’t properly moisturized
 • Limited shade range

Best Budget: Thread Beauty Face It Complexion Stick

While I have the Merit pick in my medicine cabinet, I keep Thread’s affordable option with me at all times. As in, I have three of the sticks for my purse, toiletries bag, and yes—even in my car. But no, my obsession doesn’t end there. I also have it in two shades—one to match my skin color for coverage, another two shades darker for contouring, and another one shade lighter as a highlighter. I love that it wears with a soft matte texture, giving me both the dewy, hydrated look I crave while also covering up any pores. At this price point, it’s a solid pick that truly does it all. My only gripe is that, compared to the Merit stick, I have to reapply a couple of times throughout the day.

What We Don’t:

 • Has to be touched up or reapplied every few hours

I came of makeup age in the era of BareMinerals, a brand that popularized the idea of loose powder foundation for a large swath of mall-going millennials. Try as I might, however, I never quite took to the lighter-than-air formulas or how they dusted onto my skin. But after a makeup artist suggested I look into powder for my combination skin type, I set out to find the best powder foundation—one that masters the art of the barely-there look while still offering ample coverage.

Internet research regularly points to the same brands (you’ll see your Diors, Chanels, Urban Decays, and MACs), so I did what any red-blooded, mall-going millennial would do—went to my local Sephora to ask what their top-selling powder foundations are. The good people with headsets swiftly led me to the aisles for Laura Mercier (a classic) and Make Up For Ever (a MUA fave). “It’s what most professional makeup artists use on photoshoots,” I was told of the latter.

I’ve been using my color-matched compacts for the past few weeks, and while they’re both fantastic options, I have thoughts on both (and a clear winner). But before I touch on that…

The Benefits of Powder Foundation

Unlike cream or liquid foundation, powder foundation doesn’t contain any water. Comprised mostly of finely milled pigments, emollients, and often talc, powder foundations are great for normal, combination, and oily skin types, especially ones that have oil-controlling ingredients. (Dry or mature complexions can blend powder foundation with a liquid primer to lock in a bit of hydration.)

If you’re looking for light coverage or a way to control shine, powder foundation is a fantastic option, especially during the hot summer months.

Of course, too much can lead to an overly matte finish (or the dreaded cakey look) and can leave skin feeling completely dried out. So the product you use (and how you apply it) makes a world of difference.

Below are my thoughts on Sephora’s most popular powder foundations (at least at the Dallas location) along with a few other hits that offer lighter-than-air coverage for every budget.

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Laura Mercier Smooth Finish Foundation Powder

Best Overall: Laura Mercier Smooth Finish Foundation Powder

This is the stuff. It completely obliterated all my iffy feelings about powder foundations. Well, almost. As my Sephora friends mentioned, this lovely matte finish can be drying, even for combination skin. But a nice liquid primer or a few drops of your favorite face oil should help balance things out.

The coverage is beautifully buildable, and my skin (when properly moisturized before application) felt like silk. The super fine particles create a lovely blurring effect but still leave room for things like freckles to shine. This one did require a bit more work to ensure the powder was evenly dispersed compared to Make Up For Ever.

What’s to Love: The silky feel and no-makeup finish.

What’s Not to Love: The price. But the quality (even of the compact and included sponge) is worth it.

BeautyTok Favorite: Make Up For Ever HD Skin Matte Velvet Blurring Powder Foundation

I was a little less familiar with Make Up For Ever, but if it’s good enough for the fine folks on BeautyTok, it’s certainly good enough for me. While I didn’t love it quite as much as Laura Mercier’s powder foundation, I was impressed with how smoothly the powder went on, especially considering how fine the particles are. (Also, kudos to the physical compact, which survived my butter fingers dropping it on the cold hard floor.)

Make Up For Ever’s powder felt more hydrating than Laura Mercier, though both foundations will eventually leave skin feeling dry if you don’t apply a liquid primer.

What’s to Love: It’s almost impossible to mess up a Make Up For Ever application, which swipes on ridiculously smooth.

What’s Not to Love: While it had a lighter touch than Laura Mercier, it also wasn’t quite as blurring. (I like my coverage to, well, cover.) It also didn’t leave my skin feeling as silky.

Best for Buildable Coverage: Wander Beauty Wanderlust Powder Foundation

This foundation has me shook. As a forever fan of the dewy, high-shine look, I hesitated to try something that would leave me with a more matte, poreless complexion. But after a few breakouts and even bug bites on my décolletage, I decided to dive in. I love that it wears like a second skin. This foundation covers up breakouts and red spots while also evening out my complexion. And with areas that see a little more shine like my T-zone, I’m happy to have a go-to for absorbing oil. Final note: Being someone whose skin sees a lot during my daytime hours (between workouts, meetings, and the like), I’m glad to have something I can rely on and reapply throughout the day for customizable coverage when I need it. — Isabelle, Managing Editor

What’s to Love: This foundation comes in 12 shades, offering a premium color match that’s far more accurate than its competitors. I also love the Rubicell applicator, which makes for easy subsequent applications and even makes it easy to pair the foundation with my tinted liquid moisturizer.

What’s Not to Love: While I love the lightweight formulation, I wore this during one particularly sticky beginning-of-June wedding. After an hour out in the relentless humidity, suffice it to say, this did not hold up. (But honestly, what could?)

The post Glowy, Not Greasy—10 Genius Products for Budge-Free Summer Makeup appeared first on Camille Styles.

As someone with combination skin, my makeup routine has one goal: to toe the line between glazed and greasy. Glowy, glass skin is one thing. Who doesn’t aspire to the vitality of vibrant summer skin? And with summer finally here, beauty trends lean toward a more minimal, skin-focused approach to makeup. Which sounds great in theory—that is, until my makeup melts by midday. In our search for answers, we’ve likely all come across the ultimate comparison: setting spray vs. powder. In the fight for that elusive “lit from within” glow, finding the superior option for your skin is essential.

I think of summer as the great equalizer. Keeping my makeup from slipping and sliding off my face is a year-round sport. But in the summer, we’re all faced with the same challenge—and we all want answers.

Setting Spray vs. Powder: What to Know

There are hoards of products dedicated to making your looks last, from primers and micellar waters to prep your skin to setting sprays and powders. But which options actually work? Turns out, in the battle of setting spray vs. powder, there’s no single right choice. It all comes down to your skin type and desired look.

I spoke to Jena Joyce, a skincare expert, herbalist, and the founder and CEO of The Plant Mother, about how to get your look to stay fresh using setting spray and powder. Jena shares her insights below.

What is the difference between setting powder and setting spray?

You can get a setting spray for either mattifying your makeup or making your makeup more dewy. Depending on what look you are going for, you can choose a spray that works best for you. A powder is only for mattifying and will help to reduce sheen and oil.

I would recommend that a person with dry or combination skin use a spray while those who experience oily skin should use the setting powder. However, both can also be used at the same time to amplify your makeup so it lasts longer.

What should you consider when purchasing a setting powder or setting spray?

When looking to buy a setting spray, you want to know first if you want to have dewy or matte skin. If you primarily use matte, full-coverage foundation, then a matte setting spray would be best. If you use a lightweight and dewy foundation, then choose a setting spray that will help to keep your makeup more on the glossy side. It’s important to try and match your makeup to your powder or spray as you don’t want any separation in your makeup.

When looking for a setting powder, you can get pressed or loose powder form. Both help your makeup stay put, but a powder that is more compressed can act like a foundation and will give you a full-coverage feel.

Although it’s not as common, some setting powders can contain talc which is an ingredient known to cause health issues. Inhalation of talc can cause breathing issues, chest pain, and wheezing. Try to avoid this ingredient and stick to more natural products.

What’s the best way to apply setting sprays and powders?

Setting powders and spray should be applied after your makeup. However, I would advise waiting to put your mascara on after you use a spray as this could cause smudging!

You should stick to common base ingredients when it comes to your makeup. If you don’t, your makeup will separate.

I like people to envision mixing oil with water. It simply doesn’t blend! This is the same with your makeup which is why it’s important to use a spray or powder that has the same base as your foundation and concealers. Keep oils with oils and water-based with water-based products.

How to Pick the Product That’s Right for You

You can use a setting spray, powder, or both to get your desired look. But with so many options on the market, how do you choose the right one? No beauty product is created equal, so I asked Dr. HariKiran Chekuri—a board-certified dermatologist, cosmetic surgeon, and the medical head of ClinicSpots—about choosing the right products for your skin. Keep reading for insights.

Tips for Selecting a Setting Powder

 • Shade. Select a translucent setting powder that is universal for all skin tones, or a tinted setting powder that matches your foundation or adds some warmth or depth to your complexion.
 • Finish. You can choose a matte setting powder that eliminates shine and gives you a velvety look, or a luminous setting powder that adds some subtle shimmer and gives you a soft-focus look.
 • Texture. Choose a loose setting powder that is finely milled and easy to blend, or a pressed setting powder that is compact and convenient to carry.

Tips for Selecting a Setting Spray

 • Formula. Opt for a water-based setting spray that is lightweight and hydrating, or an alcohol-based setting spray that is long-lasting and mattifying.
 • Finish. You can choose a dewy setting spray that enhances your glow and makes your skin look plump and healthy, or a matte setting spray that reduces shine and makes your skin look smooth and flawless.
 • Ingredients. You can choose a setting spray that contains beneficial ingredients for your skin type, such as antioxidants, vitamins, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, etc. You should also avoid setting sprays that contain harmful ingredients such as parabens, sulfates, phthalates, etc.

Key Ingredients to Look For

 • Antioxidants. These are substances that protect your skin from free radical damage caused by environmental factors such as UV rays, pollution, etc. Some examples of antioxidants are vitamin C, vitamin E, and green tea extract.
 • Hyaluronic acid. This is a molecule that attracts and retains moisture in your skin cells. It helps hydrate your skin, plump up fine lines and wrinkles, and improve your skin elasticity.
 • Glycerin. This is a humectant that draws water from the air into your skin. It helps moisturize your skin, smooth out rough patches, and prevent dryness.

Ingredients to Avoid

 • Parabens. Parabens are preservatives that prevent bacterial growth in cosmetic products. They are linked to hormonal disruption, allergic reactions, and breast cancer risk.
 • Sulfates. These are detergents that create foam in cleansing products. They’re known to strip away natural oils from your skin, irritate your skin barrier, and cause dryness.
 • Phthalates. These are plasticizers that make products more flexible and durable. They are associated with reproductive toxicity, endocrine disruption, and developmental defects.

Tips for Finishing Off Your Look

A general rule of thumb is to use products with similar formulas to ensure compatibility and avoid separation or oxidation of your makeup.

For example, if you use an oil-based foundation, consider using an oil-based setting powder or an alcohol-based setting spray to set it in place and prevent it from sliding off due to oil production. If you use a water-based foundation, you might want to use a water-based setting powder or a water-based setting spray to lock it in place and prevent it from drying out.

You can also experiment with different combinations of products to see what works best for you and what gives you the desired effect. For example, you can use an oil-based foundation with a water-based setting spray to add some dewiness and hydration to your matte base. Or, try a water-based foundation with an oil-based setting powder to add some warmth and glow to your natural base.

The key is to test out different products on yourself and see how they perform on your skin type and with your makeup style.

The Best Powders

Powders can get a bad reputation. Though they effectively cut shine, they can also quickly cake and crease. And even when they work, new beauty trends favor less coverage and skin that looks like skin. Can powders achieve that? Don’t count it out. But a good powder is the best way to control oil—whether you’re going for a completely matte look or just a more controlled glow.

Most Versatile Setting Powder: Glossier Wowder

Glossier is known for making skin-first products that give you an effortless glow. So it makes sense that their cult-favorite powder doesn’t compromise your pursuit of dewy, natural-looking skin. I tried the Glossier Wowder when I was deep in my Glossier phase and it’s one of the products I’ve kept in my rotation ever since. The kaolin clay base absorbs oil without leaving a cakey residue. It works well with my other hydrating products to create a look that is controlled but not flat. Get this breathable powder if you want your skin to look like skin while still toning down the midday grease.

There are so many things to love about summer: backyard barbecues, warm-weather activities, and longer days in the sun. But as a person with combination skin that leans on the oily side, I get the summer scaries at the thought of putting on makeup that will, by the end of the day, melt into a mess. Despite my lightweight summer lineup of skin tints and sheer coverage, my skin can’t seem to hold onto a look for dear life. And who wants to cake on the powder in the summer? That’s why the best primers for oily skin have become my go-to solution.

But of course, I always want to be working with the best of the best. And with new products releasing all the time, it’s important to do my research and try out what’s available. So, after lots of deep dives and scouring through skincare social media accounts, I gathered together some of the best primers for oily skin and put them to the test.

How We Determined the Best Primers for Oily Skin

There are a lot of primers on the market. For oily skin gals, not just any primer will do. Whether you’re a fan of matte or dewy looks, your oily skin can sabotage even your most low-maintenance looks. So finding the right primer for oily skin is key.

To discover which primers are actually worth the hype, I tested them based on:

 • Texture: What does it feel like?
 • Hold: How well does it hold makeup throughout the day/night?
 • Key Ingredients: What is in it? Does it contain other skincare ingredients I like?
 • Skin Type: Is it made for oily skin?
 • Size: How much bang you get for your buck

I have a decently healthy relationship with aging. I’m okay with a forehead wrinkle or two and even welcome the crinkled charm of crow’s feet. But I absolutely draw the line at dark undereye circles. I won’t leave the house without touching them up, an obsession that’s cost me a pretty penny in cover-up. So this year, to be a little kinder on my wallet, I vowed to discover the best drugstore undereye concealers available.

In addition to polling the Camille Styles team, I scoured the web for glowing reviews and ratings, ultimately landing on nine absolute bangers of undereye concealers—with four true standouts—priced mercifully under $15.

Go ahead, treat your eyes to something fairly priced.

How We Landed on the Best Undereye Concealers

I’m a makeup minimalist, but I take my concealer seriously. When I play it right, I can usually skip the foundation entirely. Because a good concealer should be able to literally cover it all—from redness and uneven skin tone to some light contouring—in addition to undereye bags.

My go-to concealer for a while has been the Brightening Concealer from Gee Beauty. After taking a master class from the founders (where I learned you should absolutely, despite popular belief, be putting concealer on your eyelids and inner eye corners), I was hooked on the luminous, vitamin-packed liquid. But at $38 a pop and with the rate I apply concealer, I was looking to pepper in a drugstore dupe to treat my dark circles.

Apart from my coworkers’ trusted recommendations, I purchased each product and gave them all a fair whirl on the ol’ eye area, aggressively judging their consistency, coverage, and creasing along the way.

Best drugstore undereye concealers.

Most Hydrating: NYX Photogenic Concealer Wand

This was really light and lovely. I also deeply appreciate how thin and precise the wand is (many of the wands in our roundup are almost comically large).

What’s to Love: My skin felt hydrated, I never had to worry about creasing, and the product blended seamlessly into my skin.

What’s Not: The NYX concealer is great for layering, but if you like full coverage, you’ll probably blow through this bottle quickly.

Most Lightweight: e.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer

“Y’all, I thought I had left behind my e.l.f. products in high school, but this concealer gets the job done. While I love the more expensive picks in my medicine cabinet (shoutout to Rare Beauty and Wander Beauty), this affordable option gives me the same lightweight finish plus added hydration. Whereas other products in the past have dried out within an hour—highlighting my lack of sleep rather than concealing it—this pick works perfectly with my tinted moisturizer for an all-day, dewy finish.” — Isabelle, Managing Editor

Best On-the-Go: Maybelline Instant Age Rewind

“This one is always packed in my purse and makeup bag for an on-the-go application. Not only does it hide dark circles, it’s super hydrating and the sponge application makes it apply so much more naturally and evenly distributed. I never feel like I’m wearing a concealer when I use this.” — Kelly, Contributing Editor

Best for Layering: Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Concealer

If you dig a matte finish, this is the concealer for you. It went on beautifully and would be so easy to layer or reapply throughout the day. I love it so much, I even included a picture of myself below (my right eye has been Neutrogena-ed).

What’s to Love: The finish is superb and I love the lipstick-like shape that makes it easy to apply on-the-go. An instant purse staple.

What’s Not: Given its name and its hyaluronic acid core, the Neutrogena concealer wasn’t nearly as hydrating as I would expect.

Sorry for the jump scare! This is me with no makeup—apart from old mascara and the Neutrogena concealer on the left eye in this picture.
best drugstore undereye concealers

For Need Full-Coverage on Acne-Prone Skin: L’Oreal Paris Infallible Full Wear Concealer

A little goes a long way with this one. It’s full coverage to the max and isn’t going to go anywhere. L’Oreal’s concealer went on a little drier than I would have liked, but the product is designed for oily, acne-prone skin.

What’s to Love: The full-coverage concealer can cover everything you want in one easy swoop and would be a great option if you’re looking to skip the foundation.

What’s Not: I didn’t love the way it settled—it felt almost a little sticky. And given how the large wand swipes on at once, it can feel a bit like face paint.

For Full-Coverage That Also Hydrates: COVERGIRL TruBlend Undercover Concealer

I didn’t know it was possible, but I got a shade that was too light for my deeply pale skin. Now I know just how porcelain concealers can go. That being said, the consistency was beautiful, offering the same full coverage as the L’Oreal Infallible concealer with a bit more hydration.

What’s to Love: The coverage is killer and there was nary a crease in sight as the day went on.

What’s Not: The product is thick and the wand is huge, making it a little tougher to blend and be precise.

For Covering Acne: Makeup Revolution Conceal and Define

The thick, full-coverage product takes a bit of work to blend in, but it may be worth it for the dose of anti-inflammatory niacinamide you get with each drop.

What’s to Love: Covering up blemishes with concealer can feel like you’re doing more harm than good, but you can feel a little better thanks to Makeup Revolution’s niacinamide.

What’s Not: While it looks great, it can feel a little too matte (almost chalky) after sitting on the skin for a while.

For Easy, Lightweight Coverage: Milani Conceal + Perfect

This dependable concealer gets the job done with ease, though it might go best with a bit of moisturizer first.

What’s to Love: It’s mixed with vitamin E and is cruelty-free.

What’s Not: There’s a bit of a paint-like smell going on here… based on some Amazon reviews, I know I’m not alone in thinking this.

For a Clean, Luxurious Feel: Catrice True Skin Concealer

This has a beautiful silky feel to it without being greasy. Unlike the Neutrogena stick, which I truly loved, I can actually feel the hyaluronic acid in this one.

What’s to Love: This swiped on so luxuriously. It’s hard to believe it’s just $7.

What’s Not: That being said, it also swipes on thick, and can take a bit of work to blend in.

When it comes to my nails, I usually play it safe. Like any pre-teen with a penchant for Nirvana and thick black eyeliner, when I first started wearing nail polish, I only wore black. I rocked the patron manicure of angsty teens for years, baring my chipped and bitten nails with pride. Eventually, I grew out of it, but I had forgotten how fun expressing myself through nails could be. That is, of course, until I took the plunge and switched out my tried-and-true tones to experiment with the best spring nail colors 2023 has to offer.

I’ll admit, for a few years I didn’t paint my nails at all. Instead, I chose to focus on repairing my nail health after years of biting them down (ouch). But recently, nail art has come back into favor. After all, there’s nothing like the power of a good manicure—and this trend is a great reminder of exactly that. Bold nail looks abound and they’re inspiring me to try something new. There’s no time like the present to be adventurous with your nails.

An Expert Shares the Biggest Spring Nail Colors for 2023

Truly, what is spring for but reinvention? The turning of the seasons always fills me with inexplicable excitement. Suddenly, anything and everything feels possible. The sun starts shining again, the days get longer, and countless opportunities spread themselves out in front of me. The call to try something new can’t be denied, and I’m diving in deep. A low-stakes way to channel this fervor for change? A DIY mani-pedi, of course. This year, I’m finally trying all the nail inspo I’ve saved on Instagram and committing myself to switching things up.

To get the lowdown on all the best spring nail colors and trends, I consulted celebrity nail stylist Fleury Rose. She gave me the scoop on all the best trends to try for spring, how to choose the right one for you, and some of her favorite shades. Keep reading for major manicure inspiration.

Fleury Rose

Fleury Rose is a celebrity nail artist. Her work has been featured in Vogue, Teen Vogue, and Paper Magazine (among other publications) as well as on countless nail and beauty blogs. Rose works with a number of model, artist, and stylist clients who love her fresh, bold take on nail art.

What nail trends do you predict being big this spring?

According to Rose, people are itching for any opportunity to express themselves. The season’s bright, bold nail trends reflect that. She notes that, after years staying indoors and without opportunity to put self-expression on display, “people are really wanting to see and be seen after what feels like an eternity of isolation. This makes me think that people will really be serving looks as the weather heats up, nails included! Think fun bright colors like green, long lengths, and lots of expressive nail art. My clients have been loving the tiny 3D gummy bears I make on their nails—totally sweet for spring.”

How to Select the Best Nail Color for You

If you’ve ever experienced that fresh-from-the-salon feeling with a new shade on your nails, then it goes without saying: color can change how you feel. “When choosing a nail color, I generally consider how it makes me feel when I look at it, but also how I’d like to feel,” says Rose.

Pick something aspirational. Whether you need a little confidence or a warm-weather mood booster, a fresh-color mani has you covered. Rose’s take is that in some areas, “it’s still QUITE cold. A lot of clients have been doing bright, neon, and dopamine-inducing colors to boost their moods ’til the weather warms up. It’s a great time to express your individuality through your nail colors if you dare!”

What are your spring nail colors recommendations?

Go big or go home, says Rose. “I love a green nail for spring! There’s a specific neon, pastel green that seems to be turning up all over my Instagram feed. OPI’s ‘The Pass is Always Greener’ is super pretty even as a French nail! I’m also obsessed with Megan Fox and her matching green mani-pedi. So cute! Gucci’s ‘Melinda’ would be so perfect!”

Now that elaborate nail art is in the mainstream—thanks in large part to the creative influence of Black culture—embellished, eye catching tips can be seen everywhere you look. They’re often tempting, but having intricately constructed art on your fingers isn’t always doable day-to-day. For inspiration that blends creativity and subtlety, we culled a some of our favorite simple nail art ideas from across the web.

To get us headed in the right direction, we tapped nail artist Hang Nguyen of @thehangedit for a simple look that’s easy to pull off—even on nude nails.

Nail artist Hang Nguyen of @thehangedit has previously worked with brands such as Glamour and Nike. With 240K+ followers on Instagram, Nguyen is known for her love of bright, poppy shades and creative designs.

“A simple nail art most can do would have to be dotted nail art,” shares Nguyen. “Whether it be just one minimal dot on each nail for a chic simple look, a polka-dotted look, or even an easy trendy dotted floral look. They’re all beginner-friendly and can be done with any dotting tools you have at home, like a pencil, bobby pin, or Q-tip.”

16 Simple Nail Art Ideas for Minimalists and Nude Lovers

Whether you’re testing out “dotticures” or finding playful ways to jazz up neutral hues, the following inspiration is perfect for nail art aficionados and beginners alike.

Easy-to-Apply Evil Eye

Opt for a super simple, circular symbol for an accent nail to amp up even the sheerest of neutral nail colors.

The Minimalist Maximalist

A color block combination where no single nail is the same. It’s minimalism done vibrantly.

Mix and Match Nails

Nail artist Kirsten Noble’s uses simple motifs for a diverse nail display that begs for a closer look.

Good in Bed(s)

Most nail art action tends to happen at the tips, but easy designs that take advantage of the nail bed’s curvature are fabulously unexpected.

Gradient Nails

With a sponge, a few dreamy hues, and an easy tutorial, this subtle style is beautiful to behold.

Doodles as Art

The absent-minded nail art you used to do with Sharpie in high school… totally in play and extremely cute.

A Happy Accent

A smiley face accent nail is instant joy. Pair it with a punchy background polish for a playful pop of color.

Dotticure to the Max

Take the “dotticure” to the next level and channel your inner MacKenzie-Childs with this simple, playful design.

Petal Pusher

We love the almost wabi-sabi nature of these petal-filled nails.

Trippy Tips

A chic pattern that’s practically mishap-proof, this swirl design offers a funky update to the classic French manicure’s go-to colors.

Pastel Polishing

A pastel “dotticure” is the perfect way to punch up a soft pink base for spring.

Love Your Nails

The dotticure… but make it hearts. The hearticure?

A Low-Key Look for the Holidays

Say it with us: neutral holiday nails. Festive minimalists, rejoice.

Squiggle Nails

Simple nail art doesn’t have to be devoid of fun. Case in point: a polish idea that—at least in terms of color—lets you run wild.

Daring Dots

Can’t decide between something bold and something neutral? With this simple but high-impact combo, you don’t have to.

Cloud Blue Nails

Your sky-blue nails have practically been begging for cloud nail art—another forgiving option for the less-than-precise painters.

I have an addiction: GRWM vlogs. (That’s ‘Get Ready With Me’ videos, for those who haven’t fallen down the social media rabbit hole.) Yes, I love the house tours and I’m obsessed with the morning routines. But there’s nothing like an in-depth makeup or skincare tutorial. From celebrity rituals filled with super-luxe products to relatable influencer routines—I love them all. They’re perfect for those mornings when I’m craving a look that’s a little outside of my everyday vibe. Or, of course, when a special occasion calls for a little extra effort. And while it can be intimidating to try something new, your Valentine’s Day makeup look is the perfect opportunity to shake things up a bit.

Top off your look with a fragrance to match your V-Day vibe. While there’s always a reason to smell good (I’d call it an aesthetic as necessary as your go-to moisturizer), there’s no occasion more apt than February 14.

By Rosie Jane Dulce Eau De Parfum

u003cpu003eSoft vanilla notes are pure nostalgia—but a step up from anything you may have picked up from Victoria’s Secret back in the day. This elegant fragrance is refreshingly simple. Perfect if you’re going low-key, but keeping with the theme this holiday.u003c/pu003e

19-69 Rainbow Bar Eau de Parfum

u003cpu003eWoody and warming, this perfume is pure, laid-back California. Warwood, fresh basil, and cedarwood blend for a distinct scent perfect for anyone opting to keep things chill this V-Day. And while the fragrance is the most important part of any perfume (of course), this bottle makes for a pretty addition to any medicine cabinet.u003c/pu003e

Bon Parfumeur 101 Rose, Sweet Pea u0026 White Cedar Eau de Parfum

u003cpu003eA fresh, floral scent is to be expected on the day of love—but this fragrance steps things up by introducing patchouli to the mix for a spicy, smoky character. If you’re leaning toward the unexpected, let this perfume guide your way.u003c/pu003e

Lake u0026 Skye Canyon Rose Eau De Parfum

u003cpu003eWhile the rose scent plays first fiddle, it’s freshened up by a base of green apple and peach. Introduce patchouli, geranium, and vanilla to the mix and you have a very 2023 spin on the classic fragrance. u003c/pu003e

OUAI Melrose Place Eau De Parfum

u003cpu003eIf you’ve also fallen for OUAI’s famed skin and hair care products, it’s time you discovered the brand’s fan-favorite fragrances. Melrose Place, bottled up? That’s right—the name couldn’t be more perfect. Bergamot, lychee, cedarwood, and white musk play up the scent’s rich, rose base for arguably the most romantic perfume you could wear this Valentine’s Day.u003c/pu003e

If plowing through endless books and articles on embodying a French aesthetic has taught me anything, it’s this: there are only two worthy nail colors. A bright red polish or a simple nude nail. I’ll admit, I’ve flirted with pastels here and there, and even fell prey to the trend of dark, vampire-esque nails. At the end of the day though, I’ll reach for nude nail colors that perfectly match my undertone. But the journey to finding just the right shade? It took a while to get there.

The biggest mistake when shopping for nude polishes is not knowing your undertone. After years of getting it wrong, I finally (finally!) got it right. Instead of reaching for nude colors with peachy or pink undertones, I now know to opt for colors that have a warm undertone to seamlessly match my skin.

Below, I’m wearing said perfect nude on my wedding day. Two coats of Essie’s Of Corset with a glossy long-wearing top coat.

How to Find Your Undertone

If you really want to find the perfect nude shades for you, it’s critical that you don’t skip this step. There are four skin undertones. Cool, neutral, warm, and olive, with olive being the trickiest to identify. And know that there’s a difference between skin tone and undertone. Common misconceptions abound that even well-meaning beauty experts might unknowingly support.

For example, not all Asians have warm or “yellow” undertones and darker skin tones don’t automatically fall in the warm or olive category. It’s a complex topic, but it’s well worth the effort if you really want to nail the perfect hue. This is one of the best tutorials I’ve seen on the subject if you want to want an in-depth breakdown.

How to Find the Perfect Nude Polish

In the hunt for personal best polish, people often make the mistake of looking for a lacquer that’s the exact same match of their skin color. It’s not a foundation, advises celebrity nail color stylist Tom Bachik. “The current trend for a chic, sophisticated nude nail color is to either go a shade lighter or a shade darker than your actual skin tone, which gives a subtle yet intentional vibe to your manicure.”

And just like that, another year has flown by. Here we are, in the liminal last weeks of December, staring down 2023 with mixed emotions. Preeminent nostalgia? By the bucketful. Anxiety? A little suspicion? Yes, those too. But mostly, there’s excitement, hope, and the resolve to manifest the best versions of ourselves. Whether you do that by setting resolutions or making a vision board, the new year energy is inescapable. To get a head start on what’s to come in 2023, I asked some experts for their 2023 beauty trend predictions. And boy, did they deliver.

As a beauty writer, I’m always curious about how the new year will look for (and on) me. In pictures, what trends will I embrace—and which will I regret? Will new laugh lines emerge on my face and what skincare will I adopt to prevent them? Will I finally cut bangs or dye my hair the copper shade I’ve been threatening all 2022? Only time—and seasoned beauty industry vets—will tell.

More Skinimalism

Skinimalism caught mainstream attention this year as the clean look trend spurred a renewed appreciation for barefaced beauty and using fewer but better products. In 2023, this trend will continue, propelled by a sustainability mindset.

“The rise of ‘less but better’ is fueled by our Covid-experience, the challenging economic environment, and growing consciousness about the state of our planet,” says Dr. Conny Wittke, Environmentalist and Co-Founder of Superzero. “In 2023, we will see an increasing ‘new eco’ movement where a minimalistic sustainable approach is preferred over the wasteful consumerism, which lacks style and true character.”

One Step Further Than Sunscreen

With sustainability on the brain and sunscreen slathered from head to toe, 2023 will bring even more ways to protect our skin from environmental damage. UV rays and pollution abound, depleting collagen and diminishing skin elasticity.

“A steady increase in ground-level ozone should emphasize the importance of using products rich in antioxidants,” says Ása Brynjólfsdóttir, Director of R&D of Blue Lagoon. She also notes that “increased heat and humidity calls for more dynamic skincare. Different seasons, climates, and humidity levels will call for a revaluation of skincare needs.”

Skincare as a Ritual

Skincare doesn’t have to be a tedious routine. Like any daily ritual, it should fit your life, your values, and your needs. 2022 introduced skin cycling and cycle syncing, and 2023 will take this further with more intuitive skincare rituals as wellness practices.

According to Giselle Go and Philipe Terrien, co-founders of DAMDAM, “The skin is a living organ, and its concerns shift with seasons, environment, and our internal biology. Rather than a 10-18 (!) step routine, we propose the contrary and keep it minimal with 3-5 steps to let the skin breathe and perform its function.” Rotating your products keeps you in tune with your skin and its needs, rather than mindlessly slapping on serums and hoping for the best.

Lesley Thornton, Holistic Esthetician and Founder of KLUR, adds: “In 2023, I believe beauty practices will be embraced as part of our health and well-being and less as indulgence. Aromatherapy will have a major role in the way we partake in scent, and body care will be more like home spa treatments.”

The Body Care Boom

The body really does keep the score, inside and out. If you’ve noticed your favorite skincare brands toting their new body care lines, you’re not the only one. You’ve got your skincare routine for your face, but what about everything from the neck down? The skinification of body care is here to stay.

“We’ll see more skincare brands taking beneficial actives from their skincare lines and apply it to products for other parts of the body,” says Nina Zilka of Alder New York. “We’ve seen how wonderful certain ingredients are for skin and consumers want to apply those same effects to their hair and body.” 2023 will be the year of thoughtful body care with nourishing ingredients, anti-aging properties, and even buzzy beauty favorites like chemical exfoliants, retinol, and niacinamide.

Frosted Tips Take the 2020S

The nostalgic makeup and fashion looks of the 90s are making a comeback—and hair trends are taking note. Frosted tips are back, but these are not the exaggerated bleach looks you remember. Instead, 2023 will see everyone asking for strategic highlights for an updated “frosted” look.

To get the retro face-framing aesthetic, Nous Haircare’s Tylor Johnson says, “tone down the highlights a shade or two lighter than the client’s base color to create a dimensional monochromatic look.” This bright, hybrid effect works on any hair shade and will be everywhere this winter.

Gemini Hair

Every year, our team waits for the Pinterest Predicts list to check the pulse of the new year’s new vibe. For hair, Pinterest says Gemini Hair will be a top trend. “In 2023, two-toned tresses will take off more than ever. Gen Z and Millennials are behind this rising trend in hair color that mixes natural hues with bright blues, purples, and pinks. Blue and black braids, plus lavender and blonde hair are on the up. Book an appointment with your stylist before it’s too late!

Big Blowouts

Fluffy hair was big, literally, in 2022. The muse: Matilda Djerf. The tool: the Dyson Airwrap. While the 70s-inspired curtain bangs dominated our feeds this year, sweep those bangs from your face and embrace the 90s with big blowouts in 2023. With new tools and technology, you don’t have to save your blowouts for special occasions and salon trips. When it comes to styling, unleash your hair from those slick buns and embrace vintage-inspired volume in 2023.

Don’t Skimp on Scalp Care

Rinse, repeat… but don’t forget your scalp. A clean scalp means long healthy hair. While we’ve seen scalp serums emerge into the hair care scene, a complete scalp treatment routine is coming soon to your shelves in 2023.

“Scalp care is essential for overall hair health, and while people tend to focus on scalp treatments, the shampoos we use every day are essential for scalp health,” says Dr. Conny Wittke. “Hair can appear limp and lifeless or become overly greasy due to buildup on the scalp from hair care products, environmental factors, or minerals and chlorine from hard water or pool water. Regular removal of such buildup, with a clarifying shampoo, is important for healthy-looking hair, airy bounce, restored shine, and for styling and coloring products to work effectively.”

#Barbiecore

Every year, a bold color trend emerges for only the most daring among us to try. Be it platinum blonde, copper orange, or a light lavender, playful hues go in and out of style like everything else. 2023’s bold color: bright, Barbie pink. Barbiecore was the year’s hottest TikTok fashion trend, and Pantone’s color of the year is Viva Magenta. Embrace the Gen Z-approved hue with this hot hair color—if you dare.

Jamie Mazzei, creative director for NuBest Salon & Spa in Manhasset, NY, one of the largest salons in the country, says: “If you’re looking for something a bit more daring and bright, try the #Barbiecore trend. Decide which side of the pink spectrum you want to be on, and then ask your colorist to match your preferred pink. If you have blond hair, it’s a simple process adding a gorgeous pink hue. If you have darker hair and you want the pink to pop, your stylist may need to bleach your hair first.”

Makeup

Lots of Liner

Soft goth, indie sleaze, and grunge girl—oh my! These throwback aesthetics all have one thing in common: dark eyeliner—and lots of it (preferably smudged). And it’s coming back in 2023. Put together the 90s/Y2K revivals and the reign of effortless beauty, and here you have it: a look that’s dramatic, but also looks like you just rolled out of bed.

I saw an Alexa Chung interview once in the heyday of “I’m with the band” rocker-chic in which she described her unconventional morning makeup routine: smudging her day-old eyeliner around her eyes. While I’d never advocate for sleeping in your makeup, the aesthetic is one I will be personally indulging in. So charcoal your eyes with vigor. Godspeed.

Unnatural Glow

Yes, everybody will still want that lit-from-within glow in 2023—but with a Y2K twist. Pinterest predicts that rave culture is making a comeback, so naturally, its influence will trickle down into beauty. Grab your glitter. Anything that sparkles and shimmers is in for 2023. Take highlighter one step further and illuminate your look with gemstones and glitter around your eyes, on your cheeks, or even around your lips. Your main sources of inspo will be disco, Euphoria, and the roaring 20s. Anything that would have guaranteed your entry into Studio 54.

Skin-Supporting Makeup

Multi-use makeup is in. I’m talking skin tints that triple as a vitamin C serum and an SPF. Lip and cheek balms fortified with hyaluronic acid. Anything that can be used multiple times in your routine, and blurs the line between skincare and makeup. Yes, you should still apply a generous amount of sunscreen before you put on your face. But an eyeshadow with UV-blocking properties doesn’t hurt. Get ready for everything you put on your skin to support your skincare efforts rather than sabotaging them.

The year 2022 brought us some particularly funky-sounding beauty trends. But despite my visceral aversion to the name “moisture sandwich,” the concept itself is solid. With a rebrand (literally any other name), the method should live on in the New Year (and has been around forever anyway), but not every BeautyTok trend should stick around.

To get a sense of the good, the bad, and the too weird to worry about, I tapped a stable of beauty experts for their end-of-the-year takes on 2022 skincare, makeup, and hair trends.

Skincare Trends

Skin Cycling

I love that we are talking more about skin cycling. It has been around for many years, but the catchy name and TikTok endorsement have put it at the forefront of beauty trends, and it is actually good for your skin. Remember this: treatment steps like AHAs, BHA, and retinol activate your skin and make it work. Just like if you pull a muscle and need to skip working out, sometimes your skin is not up for the task, and you need to let it rest. Asking it to do more will only lead to irritation and unwanted results. Learn to know when your skin is ready for a workout and when it’s not. — Dr. Heather D. Rogers, Founder and CEO of Doctor Rogers Skin Care

Moisturizing Ingredients

I have been loving how popular ceramides and niacinamides have been this year. I think they are great ingredients to have in your arsenal, especially if your skin tends to be sensitive. — Joanna Vargas, Celebrity Facialist, Founder of Joanna Vargas Salons and Skincare

Slugging

Is it necessary for everyone or all the time? Absolutely not, but for those with super dry or inflamed skin, applying a thicker occlusive on the skin really helps to speed up healing and prevent water loss. — LA-Based Esthetician, Matthew Miller

Subtle Lip Filler

I’m also excited about the movement toward beautiful subtle lip filler and the move away from big formless sausage lips. It’s all about finding someone with a light hand and understanding the underlying anatomy of the lips who can select the right injectable for you. — Dr. Heather D. Rogers, Founder and CEO of Doctor Rogers Skin Care

More Love for Natural-Looking Lips

I am loving the shift from the Kylie Jenner lip to “your lips but better” lips. I am happy that patients are no longer asking to be overfilled. The new lip fillers and injection techniques that have emerged onto the scene yield much more natural, soft, and defined lips. — SkinSpirit Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner Hillary Mills

Tried-and-True (and Googled)

Of the most googled beauty ingredients in 2022, I am happy that HA, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin A/retinols were also a top trend. — Dr. Shirley Madhère, MD, New York-based holistic plastic surgeon and Founder of Holistic Plastic Surgery and Jet Set Beauty RX

A Big Year for Daily SPF

The movement toward the daily application of sunscreen made huge progress this year. Everyone is talking about what an essential step it is against the onslaught of aging, and they are right! 90% of aging comes from the sun, so why not stop that from happening in the first place? — Dr. Heather D. Rogers, Founder and CEO of Doctor Rogers Skin Care

PRP as a Filler Alternative

PRP, or Platelet Rich Plasma, is a great alternative to filler and is also great to combine with skin treatments. It entails drawing blood, spinning it in a centrifuge to separate its components, and then injected into the skin or used on top of the skin using a plethora of modalities. These procedures help improve the formation of collagen and elastin and are full of important growth factors, which give your skin an amazing boost. — Salt Lake City-Based SkinSpirit Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner Mindy Simpson

“Expensive Brunette”

Hailey Bieber really inspired so many people to go darker with their hair color, going the Expensive Brunette route which felt so modern and fresh. — Jason Lee, Hairstylist, Colorist, and Founder of Mela & Kera

The “Skinification” of Hair

It’s been my philosophy as a hairstylist throughout my career. There’s unfortunately been a significant increase in the amount of hair breakage and premature hair loss, but the consumer has become increasingly educated and aware of the ingredients in their hair care. Many of our new customers have turned to Iles Formula as it’s made using raw, sustainably sourced ingredients, often found in skincare. — Wendy Iles, Celebrity Hairstylist and Founder of Iles Formula

Layers

I loved seeing layers make a strong return with shags and ‘mullet-silhouettes’ in all hair textures signaling the return of the ‘haircut’ which had gone silent for so many years. We haven’t been this adventurous with haircuts since the 90s. — Jason Lee, Hairstylist, Colorist, and Founder of Mela & Kera

The Most Baffling Beauty Trends of 2022

Skincare Trends

DIY Skincare

Anything you see on TikTok that uses household or other beauty products that are not intentionally formulated for skin—like using deodorant as a primer, using glue to remove blackheads, using toothpaste to treat zits, or using hairspray to set makeup. Household items are not recommended for skin care because they are not manufactured for that purpose.

When you DIY your skin care, you open yourself up to allergic reactions and rebound effects that exacerbate the issue you are trying to address. Toothpaste will strip your skin, the glue will destroy its barrier, salt and sugar scrubs will create microtears, and hairspray or coconut oil will lead to congestion and breakouts.

I urge everyone to stop taking skin care advice from people with no skin or health background. You wouldn’t ask a person without children for parenting advice; why would you trust a random person regarding your health? — Medical esthetician Candace Marino, aka The LA Facialist

More DIY Skincare…

Let’s get rid of home remedy skincare. One huge trend has been Aspirin for acne—people are taking Aspirin at home, crushing them up, and placing the powder/paste on their blemishes. If you were to talk to a dermatologist about this trend, they would jump at the chance to tell you that is not helpful and can actually harm or damage the skin. Consider meeting with a professional skincare expert for science-backed treatment options for acne! — Salt Lake City-based SkinSpirit Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner Mindy Simpson

Pore Vacuuming

Although this viral trend has proven to be oddly satisfying to some, at-home pore vacuuming devices are not necessarily effective and can actually do more harm than good. They can damage the outermost layer leaving skin inflamed and dehydrated. You might even break out more as a result! Instead, opt for a well-balanced chemical exfoliant that also contains anti-inflammatory ingredients, such as the Tête-À-Tête PhytoPeel Resurfacing Mask and PhytoTrilology Booster. — Kira Vidergauz and Dr. Sharon Hirschowitz, co-founders of Tête-À-Tête

Snail Mucin

It’s not that snail mucin is bad for the skin, it just seems super gimmicky. Especially when you have humectants like glycerin that are just as good—and without possibly stressing out an animal for the ingredient. — LA-Based Esthetician, Matthew Miller

The “Tinkle” Razor

AKA at-home dermaplaning. Please leave that to the professionals. I’ve seen too many people bruise, cut, and even give themselves infections! — Kasey Boone, Los Angeles esthetician and founder of Glow Skincare

Fox Brows

I am not a fan personally of the “fox brow” lift à la Bella Hadid. I feel it looks tight, pulled, and very unnatural. For clients who are looking for a lift, I prefer using Botox for a subtle improvement.SkinSpirit Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner Hillary Mills

Unnecessary Merch

It felt like every beauty brand launched some kind of limited edition merch this year… hopefully in 2023, more brands will start thinking about the environmental impact of unneeded merch. — Rosie Jane Johnston, founder of By/Rosie Jane

Hair Trends

The “Wolf Cut”

My 11-year-old daughter asked for one, and I realized I still have PTSD from when my Mom gave me bangs in the 5th grade. Oh, and brow lamination… I can’t get on board. — Casey Georgeson, Founder and CEO of Saint Jane Beauty

The “Octopus Cut”

I never really got into the term “Octopus haircut.” I’m all for a 90s influence but this trend is one that I’m okay to let go of. I just feel like shags and mullets are strong iconic silhouettes that are definitive throwbacks and were haircuts that became legendary. The Octopus haircut just doesn’t hold up in comparison. — Jason Lee, Hairstylist, Colorist, and Founder of Mela & Kera

Baby Bangs

I mean, I wish I could pull bangs off in general, but I feel like it is very few that can rock a baby bang and make it look awesome. I’m hoping that regular, face-framing bangs come back. — Salt Lake City-based SkinSpirit Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner Mindy Simpson

Strawberry Blonde

Strawberry copper tones have had their moment as we head into rich mocha brown earth tones. — Trace Henningsen, Celebrity Hairstylist and Leonor Greyl Ambassador

Bleached Brows

Having a background in makeup, I love a strong brow. Brows frame the face and without them, things can look off. Also, it just scares me to mess with the brows. Once injured, brows don’t easily grow back. All of us who overplucked in high school probably know this. Bleaching and unnecessarily damaging those precious brows need to go. — Salt Lake City-Based SkinSpirit Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner Mindy Simpson

Vivid Tones

I’m so over block color and contrasting vivid tones. For clients who aren’t willing to do the maintenance and upkeep, the hair is more prone to damage, breakage, and dulling. Wearing this type of hair color technique, as it was seen on young popstars this year, really detracts from someone’s natural beauty and it’s super expensive to create, let alone refresh. My goal is always to enhance and accentuate the quality and shine of everyone’s locks, and these looks can turn into a total disaster. — Min Kim, L’Oréal Professionnel Global Ambassador

The 2022 Beauty Trends to Stick With Into 2023

Skincare Trends

Slugging

I think slugging will remain, but I recommend an elevated slugging experience using skin care products with good ingredients for maximum impact on the skin. The Vaseline has got to go! I recommend a balm packed with anti-inflammatory ingredients, antioxidants, and vitamins like Furtuna Skin’s Replenishing Balm, which has potent medicinal plants that calm, soothe, protect the skin, and aid in healing. — Medical esthetician Candace Marino, aka The LA Facialist

Glass Skin

Glass skin is a result of a balanced skincare routine. I personally will always choose a dewy look over matte. — LA-Based Esthetician, Matthew Miller

Ageless Beauty

I think in 2023 we will see more beauty brands embracing authenticity by celebrating real people in marketing campaigns that include Gen X. I think trends like ageless beauty and Botox-free beauty will have a big moment in the New Year. — Rosie Jane Johnston, Founder of By/Rosie Jane

Facial Bars

The trend of sustainability and mindful packaging will continue to bring cleansing bars to the forefront as the modern version of the traditional bar serves some great ingredients without the waste. — Joanna Vargas, Celebrity Facialist, Founder of Joanna Vargas Salons and Skincare

An Inside/Out Glow

The inside/outside connection between skin health and gut health will also continue to be important in how we look after ourselves this year. Our gut microbiome continues to be crucial as it rules over our immunity, sensitivity, and general wellness. We will see more supplements and probiotic smoothies in the new year. — Joanna Vargas, Celebrity Facialist, Founder of Joanna Vargas Salons and Skincare

Fight the Filter

I believe that there is a time and a place for plastic surgery, but the societal standards we have developed for women’s bodies have become increasingly more unnatural and impossible for the average woman to attain. I love seeing women speak up about these issues and promote healthy realistic body imagery in advertising across the industry and think this is a welcome change that is here to stay! — SkinSpirit Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner Hillary Mills

Bakuchiol

It’s such a unique ingredient in that it has a similar gene expression to retinol. It performs by reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and evens skin tone without the unpleasant side effects you so often see with retinol, like redness, flaking, and irritation. — Kira Vidergauz and Dr. Sharon Hirschowitz, Co-Founders of Tête-À-Tête

I think the super natural Glossier look is a little tired and people are looking to get more creative with their makeup. So a lip oil, but with a heavy lipliner. Matte eyeshadow but with a thick cat eye. Soft and pretty but with an edge. — Cyndi Ramirez Fulton, CEO and Founder of Chillhouse

Lip Oils

People are obsessed with them for good reason. They’re nourishing and hydrating, and if formulated right, they drench your lips in omegas, vitamins, and antioxidants. — Casey Georgeson, Founder and CEO of Saint Jane Beauty

Radiance

Radiance is no longer seasonal. It’s important to have a healthy glow all year round. — Rea Ann Silva, Creator and CEO of Beautyblender

90s Monochrome Makeup Looks

I don’t see this trend going away anytime soon. This slightly grungy, slightly classy trend looks good on pretty much everyone and is easy to do for those that are not makeup-inclined. Take a deep brown from the eye down the contour and to the lips for a stunning look on top of your already glowy skin. — Salt Lake City-based SkinSpirit Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner Mindy Simpson

The Side Part

I’m personally excited to see the side part make a comeback in the hair category since that’s been my style since the 7th grade. — Casey Georgeson, Founder and CEO of Saint Jane Beauty

Big, Bouncy Hair

I think butterfly hair, bouncy blowouts, and #healthyhair will stick. It’s about color, styles, and cuts that promote nourished, well-looked-after hair. Hair growth serums and ingestible will continue to remain an important part of our haircare routine in an effort to get the biggest and best blowout of the year. — Tara Simich, Founder and CEO of Mermade Hair

Big Blowouts, With a Modern Twist

The new version of the big blowout is based on nurtured hair—softer and more voluminous without any stiffness. Most traditional styling products result in sticky and stiff hair, which is not what this look is about. Nurtured hair is the way forward. — Wendy Iles, Celebrity Hairstylist and Founder of Iles Formula

Scalp Health

This will always be the priority for our hair. We may follow trends, but healthy hair never goes out of style. Trace Henningsen, Celebrity Hairstylist and Leonor Greyl Ambassador

Organic Hair

We can thank Gen Z for this cool progression where we will see hair being less put together and it will feel just very organic. Gone are the days of a shameful side part, now we are living in a Gen Z world where we get to be confident with our looks and inspiration for 2023 while keeping it minimal, cool and effortless. — Jason Lee, Hairstylist, Colorist, and Founder of Mela & Kera

Glowing Hair

Natural, muted, sun-mimicking, classic, shiny, moisturized hair is in forever. — Min Kim, L’Oréal Professionnel Global Ambassador
