The year is 2020. You haven’t showered in +/- three days. You’re wearing the same sweatpants you slept in. That top knot is still holding strong and the Amazon boxes full of cozy socks, craft kits, and elderberry gummies are collecting on your doorstep. You feed your sourdough starter, eat a slice of banana bread, and hop on Zoom for your morning meetings.

Perhaps that paragraph should have come with a trigger warning. But isn’t it great to know how far we’ve come?! We went HARD with the sweats and swung the pendulum over to donning black-tie gowns in grocery stores just to feel something. Then, we found a new work-from-home rhythm as many of us stayed remote or hybrid. Now in the year 2024, we wear sweatpants when we want to, thankyouverymuch. And for the most part, we get dressed. Still, no matter which way we get the job done, we all face the same question every morning. What am I going to wear?

Woman working at desk in comfortable work from home clothes.

I can help you with that. I’ve worked fully from home for five-plus years before moving to the hybrid model two years ago. As a “professional” WFH-er I’ve collected a few rules and standards for work-from-home clothes. Let’s review.

The Rules of Work-From-Home Clothes

 1. No Hard Pants. There must be room for easy movement and therefore this COVID-era rule remains. Urban Dictionary defines hard pants to perfection: “Pants that don’t have a stretchy, elastic waistband. During any pandemic, the desire to wear only elastic waistband pants instead of pants like jeans. During the pandemic, Victoria refused to wear hard pants.
 2. Wear Easy Layers. The thermostat does not care that you set it to the same temperature every single day. It will always be colder in one room and warmer in the next. Layers are key for comfort.
 3. Clothes Must Be Versatile. Your clothes need to take you seamlessly from Zooms to coffee dates to errands to lunches. From sitting to standing and sitting again. A solid collection of basics mixed with fun items makes for a closet full of options.
 4. Opt For Casual Yet Professional. This one should be pretty obvious—no need to wear a pair of heels down the hall to your home office—but we can also try a smidge harder than three-day-old pants.
 5. Clothes Should Make You Feel Like You. It’s at the bottom of this list but consider it rule number one.

Work-From-Home Clothes IRL

Everlane trousers work from home outfit

I have a few essentials that I’ll recommend, all of which check off all the rules. I still LOVE my nap dress, for example, and I’m obsessed with these tailored pants. But there is a particular pair of pants I see on just about every WFH outfit list that I had to go try for myself.

I went to the store to try them on and… yeah. They were not as dreamy (pun intended) on my particular body as I hoped they’d be. However, I did discover these incredibly comfortable and versatile trousers (above!) that I immediately loved. They only had petite in the store so I’m planning on ordering the 32″ inseams, but I also don’t totally mind the shorter length. (I’m 5’8″ for reference.)

Work-From-Home and Office Capsule Collection

Behold the ultimate collection of work-from-home clothes for the modern gal. I gathered my personal favorites alongside some everyday essentials, then polled my very fashionable and amazing colleagues via Slack to share any pieces they swear by. I’d first encourage you to shop your own closet for items in these particular categories and then decide what’s missing. (P.S. Don’t sleep on a red power dress. In a sea of neutrals sometimes you need to opt for something fiery and strong!)

Outfit 4: The Day You Go From Home to Happy Hour

Soft Lounge Slip Dress / Sézane Max Shirt / Chuck Taylor All Star Classic

Scoop-Neck Rib-Knit First Layer Tank Top

I have this tank in black and white and truly, I could build an entire wardrobe around these two pieces. The fit is snug but cozy and the soft fabric holds up over several washes. However, I’ve learned that my basics take the most heat when it comes to spills and stains. This price point makes it easy to grab a new one when those days inevitably come.

Pima Boxy Crew

My Buck Mason tees are some of the hardest working pieces in my closet because I just can’t stop wearing them. I love this boxy fit that’s sporty and feminine at the same time.

Valencia Blouse

I’ve had my eye on this blouse for years and I finally own her for myself. It instantly elevates a pair of worn-in jeans—so chic and yet so comfortable. UGH, j’adore.

Max Shirt

You might call this classic button-up the Camille Styles office uniform. As Camille quipped on set just last week, “I could literally wear this shirt every day.”

Valerio Jacket

We’re still rocking blazers but lately, it’s the chic cardigan jacket that brings an outfit together in a snap. (And it’s a bit cozier for WFH wear.)

Unisex Oversized Crew

The oversized sweatshirt is a must for those days when you’re craving cozy productivity.

Kara Wrap Cardigan

It’s a blanket disguised as clothes, what more do you need?

Soft Lounge Slip Dress

The Internet-famous dress is just as soft and comfortable as it claims to be.

The Scarlet Dress

Take it from me, a Christy Dawn dress doesn’t go out of style. Expect this to take a starring role in your wardrobe for years to come.

The Easy Pant

It’s all in the name. Comfortable, easy to pull on, and look great with a tee, or a button-up, or a cardigan…

High-Waist Airlift Leggings

IYKYK. The only black leggings, as far as we’re concerned.

The Way-High® Drape Pant

The aforementioned pants, these trousers are easy to dress up with a blouse and a flat after working from home in a tee and sneakers.

Lounge Waffle Mockneck Top

The lounge set is the essential piece of a WFH-er. This top has matching pants (and honestly, all A&F’s loungewear is on point these days).

Grove Short Sleeve Field Suit

Yes, Barbiecore is out, but if Greta Gerwig can rock this exact jumpsuit on set day after day then you better believe it belongs in a solid working-girl wardrobe well beyond trends.

Villa Jogger

These are joggers you can wear outside the house and no one will even know you’ve lived in them for two days straight.

Tencel Jersey Fit and Flare Dress

I’m of the opinion that the right dress is more comfortable than any sweat suit you throw at me. This dress proves me right.

The Ellie Nap Dress

Speaking of comfortable dresses, this one was literally (okay, kind of literally) made for napping. I’ve had one for three years and it’s the easiest choice when I can’t put any effort into what to wear.

Adelaide Sweater Set

It’s a sweat suit, but it’s elevated. You’ll be more productive because it’s cute. It’s science!

New Balance 574 Core

A pair of New Balance sneakers belongs is any collection for the sheer comfort. They look good with leggings, trousers, and dresses alike.

Minnetonka Chesney Slippers

Avoid those cold floors AND putting on Big Girl shoes. We’re in our slipper era.

Chuck Taylor All Star Classics

White sneakers for under $100? Done.

The post I Work in Fashion, and These 12 Style Trends Will Be Everywhere In 2024 appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>
2023 was the year of quiet luxury, Barbiecore, and coquette. For me, it was also the year I started finding a groove with my style—taking more chances and wearing more of what I love. It helps that I not only work in fashion but also alongside some of the most stylish people I know. (Our office mirror is famous for capturing some incredible OOTDs.)

One of the hardest, yet most fun, parts about my job is trying to predict what will sell 12 months in advance by identifying and choosing the top 2024 fashion trends to lean into throughout the year. From studying the runways to gaining inspiration from style icons, to letting my creativity run a bit wild, it’s safe to say I’ve done my research on the fashion trends that’ll soon take over your feeds.

Whether you’re looking to reinvent your style in the new year or simply wondering what we’ll all be wearing this year, I’ve rounded up the top 2024 fashion trends below—plus photo inspo and my favorite pieces to help make each look your own.

And though it’s easy to go crazy buying up the latest trending items on Zara and H&M, my number one piece of advice when it comes to trends is to shop your closet first. While it’s always fun to treat yourself to something new, chances are, some of these 2024 fashion trends are spin-offs from years past and you might be able to give new life to something that’s been gathering dust in the back of your closet. I’ve also recently started “shopping” Pinterest, saving outfits that I like, and trying to recreate them with pieces I already own. Remember: Curating a wardrobe you love is a journey, and it’s one that she be approved with thoughtfulness and care.

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Bridget Chambers
Bridget Chambers

Bridget Chambers is a Texas native currently living in Los Angeles, California. While earning a Business Honors degree at The University of Texas, she enjoyed styling her friends for events, spotting designer lookalikes for less, and running an Instagram account called Bridget on a Budget. She now channels her love for fashion into her full-time role at Daily Drills, where she coordinates everything from fashion production to brand partnerships to events, blurring the lines of work and play.

Chocolate Brown

Red was the main character of 2023, from Hailey Bieber’s strawberry girl makeup to pops of red taking over our TikTok feeds. Moving into the new year, it’s time to dip those strawberries into chocolate because rich brown tones are taking over in 2024. A monochrome chocolate brown look exudes quiet luxury, but if you want to get creative with color, mixing browns and blacks will earn you a stamp of approval from stylists. Though once a fashion faux pas, rules are meant to be broken, and this color combo is an easy on-trend look.

Maximalist Jewelry

When it comes to jewelry, more is more—a little something I learned from the queen of maximalist jewelry herself, Rocky Barnes. Just like mixing browns and blacks, styling both gold and silver jewelry is one of my favorite 2024 fashion trends on the rise. Dip your toe into this trend with a pair of chunky earrings from brands like Heaven Mayhem and pile strands of vintage-inspired necklaces from Galley Los Angeles to your neckline.

Flirty Fem

2023 has been coined the year of the girl, with Margot Robbie and the Barbie movie creating a craze for all things pink. And of course, ballet flats made an unexpected comeback (we all love an underdog story!). After seeing about a thousand Christmas trees with coquette-style bows to replace ornaments, I have a feeling this trend isn’t going anywhere, though it will take on some new forms in the new year. A-line silhouettes, peplums, and lace are a few of the girliest 2024 fashion trends we can expect to see.

Big (And I Mean BIG) Bags

Though the microscopic Louis Vuitton handbag made headlines in 2023, oversized catch-all bags will be newsworthy in 2024. Practicality is back in style and the fashion girlies are carrying bags that will actually carry their stuff—without sacrificing style, of course. The Row leads the charge on this trend, but don’t worry, you can still get the look for less.

Layers on Layers

If you’re a bit wary of bold fashion trends, let layering be your style goal for 2024. Layering will be the mark of a “cool girl” this year, while also being achievable for anyone. Letting a sliver of a white tee shirt peek through from underneath a sweater, adding a frilly sock to your go-to loafers, or tossing on a quilted vest over a collared shirt are just a few easy, small ways to make an outfit more interesting.

Wrong Shoe Theory

This is one of my favorite 2023 styling tips that’s growing legs in 2024. Coined via TikTok, The Wrong Shoe Theory states that an outfit is made more interesting with an unexpected shoe—AKA, be bold with your styling choices.

If you were to wear a very feminine outfit, The Wrong Shoe Theory would say that a chunky sneaker or boot would take the look to the next level. In contrast, a sportier or edgier look should be paired with a ballet flat or slingbacks. Keep this in mind as you shop your closet for 2024 fashion trends, as just making a funky footwear choice will set you well on your way.

Barrel Leg Jeans

While this shape may not be for everyone, barrel-leg or horseshoe jeans are the style of the new year. With a high waist and a voluminous leg, these pants give you a bit more shape than ultra-baggy wide-leg denim, while still steering clear of the skinny jean. It’s unexpected and can be surprisingly flattering—we’re here for it.

Testing Textures

NYC Wardrobe Stylist Mac Rose has gone viral on TikTok for her advice that “if an outfit is not interesting through color, then it has to be interesting through shape. If it’s not interesting through shape, then it has to be interesting through texture.”

I’ve loved seeing how everyone interprets this styling advice through their videos. But what really sticks out to me is the use of texture to create a unique outfit. Pleats, sequins, and sherpa were all over the fashion week runways and never fail to add depth and interest.

Pointed Toe Shoes

As a self-diagnosed shoe addict, pointed toe sandals and slingbacks might be my favorite of the 2024 fashion trends—though they had to grow on me. (Before I could fully adopt the trend, I had to erase the image of the Wicked Witch under Dorothy’s house from my mind.) Now, I see the shoes for their chic ability to elongate your legs and add sass to a look. Try pairing a pointed-toe with a long trouser or jean, letting just the tip of the shoe make its point—metaphorically and literally.

Mini Everything (Except Your Bag)

While bags are getting bigger, clothes are getting smaller. One of the 2024 fashion trends that is slowly making its way from the runway to our wardrobes is micro mini shorts and skirts. These barely-there bottoms are a chance to go bold with your styling. Though the full extent of this trend intimidates even me, you can still hop on the bandwagon with traditional shorts and mini skirts. Adding tights to the look can tone down the drama as needed.

Relaxed Tailoring

Overly oversized silhouettes are slowly on the out, and relaxed, yet tailored styles are heading back in. Skinny jeans remain in exile, but straight-legged denim, form-fitted blazers, and stylish suiting are roaming the streets. Look for styles that are loose enough to be comfy but fitted enough to show your shape when building your 2024 wardrobe.

All Things Sheer

Sheer is chic in 2024. Another trend that you can embody to varying degrees, try adding a bold burgundy tight under your mini skirt or go head-to-toe with a sheer dress over Skims undergarments. Mesh shoes even had a moment in 2023, which is a testament that this trend is going big—and not going home anytime soon.

The holidays have been here for a minute, and if you aren’t already in the midst of festive mayhem, then I’m sure it’s about to sneak up on you. (Like, tomorrow!) Between the parties, planning, and all the presents to buy, our plates are full. And with all the activity comes a packed social calendar. Sure, it’s a lot to manage, but I’m not going to lie—after a few years of engaging solely online, I’m more than a little excited to get dressed up. Thankfully, with a solid capsule wardrobe of heavy-hitting winter basics, your cold-weather mood board is well within reach.

The Best Cozy and Elegant Winter Basics

Our winter basics are those you continue to go back to on a seasonal basis. And sure, in a world of “core” after “core” trend, the idea of finding a timeless piece can feel like a needle-in-a-haystack situation. But don’t worry, no matter the occasion you’re dressing for, these winter basics have you covered.

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

What to Wear: Coffee and Holiday Shopping With Friends

Every holiday season merits a weekend day full of catching on your holiday gifting list and connecting with friends over a cuppa. For these festive occasions, the focus is on comfort while still incorporating pieces into your ensemble that guarantee compliments. A tailored blazer, cozy but flattering pant, and statement accessories complete the formula. It’s easygoing while still garnering a solid spot on your feed.

The Blazer

The trick to selecting a timeless blazer is opting for one that moves with the seasons. Your best bet is to go for structure, but with enough give that you can layer dresses, sweaters, and the like underneath. It’s the easiest, chicest addition to any closet.

The Tailored Pant

IYKYK: Quince’s ultra-stretch ponte pant is a study in blending comfort with style. And because the brand is known for offering quality pieces at an accessible price, you’re welcome to select as many colors as you’d like (the burgundy and olive are my other two faves). But as far as pants that do everything for you—nothing beats Cartolina’s Hallie Pant. I’m wearing the “saddle” colorway above, and I can say with certainty: I’ve never loved a pant more. The high rise and elongating slim leg is beyond flattering—and yes, they do feel like yoga pants. (Tip: these run big, you’ll want to size down.) Your wardrobe of winter basics isn’t complete without them.

The Understated Statement Necklace

It’s a paradox, but true—we all need a necklace that completes the outfit while subtly making its presence known. I’m wearing the Banana Republic cubic zirconia piece above and love its classic, just-sparkly-enough appeal. Or, create a little more interest in your arsenal of winter basics by opting for a layered piece that still seamlessly ties in with whatever you have on.

The Statement Bag

‘Tis the season for top-handled bags. Mini, but mighty, these statement bags don’t simply make space for the essentials, but also offer a pop of interest for any look. When I’m not pairing my favorite Melie Bianco Cici bag with this exact blazer + pant + necklace formula, I love making it the grounding piece of a monochrome white or black fit. Streamlined and chic.

Camille Styles winter basics.

What to Wear: The Casual Family Gathering

The key to dressing for family hangs is to go for an elevated comfy look. You don’t want to look like you didn’t try, but you also want to be comfortable enough to roll up your sleeves in the kitchen, play on the floor with little ones, and have something flexible enough to win at a competitive game of charades. Consider these your go-to options for an effortlessly cool look.

The Chunky Sweater

If you have a curvy body type, my recommendation would be to go with a cropped option to define your waistline or to pair it with a high-waisted pant while doing a casual front tuck. This lets you show off your shape even while adding a little volume from the chunky knit.

The Perfect Jeans

When it comes to finding the perfect jeans, trust that with a higher price tag comes everything you’re looking for: comfort, quality, and a beyond-flattering look. The good news is that you don’t need anything more than a few go-to pairs for endless outfit combinations. I love a high-waisted bootcut in a darker wash for a universally perfect fit. Again, I’m giving you classic pieces that will never go out of style, so you can feel good about investing in your favorite.

The Cozy Slide

These Jenni Kayne mules went viral for a reason. They’re the perfect laid-back but still elevated alternative to a classic heel. With the pointed heel and elongated shape, they’re flattering for anyone and pair perfectly with every outfit. Cozy slides are a simple way to upgrade your cozy-casual Christmas outfit. Or, if you really want to lean into the coziness this season, the UGG Tazz slipper is a no-brainer.

What to Wear: Christmas Eve at Home

The Cardigan

If you run hot and can’t commit to a sweater indoors, cardigans are a solid solution. Layer it with a silk tank top or over a—yep, you guessed it!—slip dress. You can also roll with it and commit with only a bra underneath. Either way, a cardigan is a win-win. Go with a longer cardigan if you want to keep it comfy, or try a cropped style to show off or create the look of curves.

The Silk Skirt

If you’re not yet sold on the silk dress, give the silk skirt a try. It’s an easy yet comfortable way to elevate your look at home without sacrificing comfort. It comes in a plethora of lengths, but my go-to is the mini. I like to pull out the mini for a night out and keep it classy with a slightly longer hemline for dinner with the family. It looks good with a chunky boot or delicate heel, too. You can keep a slip skirt in your rotation all year, but it’ll be a standout during the holidays.

The Hair Bow

Even Pinterest predicted it—bows are everywhere. They’re the perfect holiday accessory, and the good news is that you’ll be able to keep yours pinned tight throughout the next year. I have The Kate Bow in both black and cream. It’s the perfect Gossip Girl moment to literally tie together any outfit. (The collection of hair accessories was made in collaboration with NYC-based entrepreneur Kira Jones—seriously, her winter basics styling is iconic.)

What to Wear: Festive Holiday Parties

When it comes to holiday parties, there are a few materials and textures that will instantly put you in the mood to celebrate. I love the impact of velvet-everything. It goes beyond monochromatic and creates an instant, luxurious appeal. Make a statement in a pants-and-blazer combo or go classic in a midi dress. No matter how you incorporate it into your holiday dressing, you’re sure to look put together in velvet.

Velvet Everything

Nothing says the holidays quite like velvet—it can instantly dress up any outfit. One of my favorite velvet pairings is with satin or silk. The juxtaposition of the two fabrics creates such a luxurious vibe. Accessories are always an easy way to add some velvet to your wardrobe, too.

A Fur Topper

Go luxe on luxe with velvet and faux fur—or keep things *relatively* simple by making it your outfit’s go-to statement piece. However you choose to style your faux fur coat, there’s no denying: the material is everywhere this season. And thankfully, there are now plenty of options for beautiful styles at accessible prices.

Metallic Accessories

All that glitters isn’t just gold—it’s also silver, rose gold, and champagne. In a world of metallics, you will always shine. With metallics, I like to follow the rule that less is more. They can be intense in a good way, so use them sparingly.

What to Wear: A Cozy Holiday Morning

For me, holiday mornings are all about keeping it comfortable. I’m talking soft pajamas, warm robes, and elevated loungewear. Whether you’re the matching pajama kind of family or you like to lean more luxe, you can always come back to these pieces. One thing is for sure: you’re bound to create special memories to look back on all while being extra cozy. This lets you focus on what matters most: the magic and joy of your family.

The Winter-White Set

Don’t get me wrong, I love matching sets in all colors and prints (particularly if you’re coordinating with the fam on Christmas Day). But nothing says classic quite like a winter-white set. Whoever called white after Labor Day a fashion faux-pas certainly never encountered the captivating impact of a luminous sweater-and-pants (or skirt!) pairing. Bonus: The look is elevated enough to take out of the house—but you’ll still feel like you’re wearing pajamas.

Live-In Activewear

If a soft set doesn’t hold up to all you have planned on the big day, let me provide an alternative: elevated activewear. My family has long been the type to venture out for a snowy hike once the presents are opened and we’ve drained the coffee pot. If that sounds familiar, buttery-soft leggings and an oversized half-zip are the way to go. Bonus: If movement is at the top of your list of 2024 intentions, a cute workout set always makes keeping the commitment easier.

Warm Footwear

Of course, nothing completes a Christmas-at-home ensemble quite like the coziest socks or slippers. Thankfully, brands that do basics to a tee like SKIMS understand that just because we’re prioritizing comfort doesn’t mean we don’t also want to look cute. With the options below, both are 100% possible.

The post Dressing for the Seasons—Exactly What to Wear if You’re an “Autumn” appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>
You know when you wear a certain outfit and the compliments begin to roll in? People might remark on the way your eyes pop, how great your skin looks, or maybe it’s a flat-out, “That top is your color!” These are all signs that the color you’re wearing is working in harmony with your natural features. Your skin appears more even, your eyes sparkle, and there’s a general sense of ease to your appearance. This is the magic of dressing for your season.

Of the four seasons, there are two over-arching types: warm (Springs and Autumns) and cool (Winters and Summers). If you’re in the warmer seasons, you’ll favor more yellow tones whereas cool seasons favor more blues. If you want to find out your color type, we did a deep dive on each season right here.

Now, it’s important to remember that these characteristics aren’t strict, set-in-stone rules to determine your seasonal category. They’re more like friendly guideposts commonly linked to each season. This especially holds true for individuals with diverse skin tones, where traditional seasonal color advice often leans toward those with lighter complexions. Ultimately, your color journey is all about what makes you feel fantastic and authentic.

Today, we’re taking a deep dive into what it means to embody Autumn—that magical season when the earth takes on a golden hue and we reach for cozy books and warm drinks. I’ll unpack the three sub-categories of Autumn color analysis and show you exactly what to wear to dress in harmony with your season. But first, let’s recap Autumn as a whole.

outfit for autumn seasonal color analysis

Autumn Color Analysis

Autumns have low contrast but with warm undertones. They often have warm hair colors, warm-toned eyes, and medium to dark skin. Autumns thrive in rich, earthy color combinations like deep rust and olive green.

Signs you might be an Autumn:

Vein Test: If your veins appear more greenish, it suggests you have warm undertones, which align with the Autumn season.

Eye and Hair Color: Autumns often have warm, earthy tones in their natural eye and hair colors. This includes shades like deep brown, auburn, red, or warm blonde. If your natural eye and hair colors fall within these warm, earthy categories, it’s another sign of being an Autumn.

How Colors Make You Feel: Pay attention to how you feel when you wear certain colors. Autumns typically look best in warm, earthy, rich colors like deep oranges, browns, olive greens, and mustard yellows. If these colors make your complexion appear more vibrant and healthy, you’re likely an Autumn.

Jewelry Metals: Autumns tend to look better in warm metals like gold and bronze due to their warm undertones. If gold jewelry enhances your skin tone more than silver, it’s another clue that you might be an Autumn.

The 3 Sub-Categories of the Autumn Color Analysis Palette

There are three sub-categories within the Autumn color palette: Soft Autumn, True Autumn, and Dark Autumn. Determining your specific sub-category within the Autumn palette involves a deeper analysis of your skin, hair, and eye tones and understanding your overall color harmony and contrast levels. Here’s how you can distinguish between these sub-categories:

Skin Undertones and Depth:

Soft Autumn: If your skin has neutral or golden undertones, but they are softer and more muted in intensity compared to Dark Autumn, you might fall into the Soft Autumn category.

True Autumn: If your skin has warm undertones that are moderate in intensity with either neutral or golden undertones, you could be a True Autumn.

Dark Autumn: If your skin has neutral, slightly warm undertones and has a richer, deeper hue, leaning toward olive or golden, you may align with Dark Autumn.

Hair Color and Depth:

Soft Autumn: Hair for Soft Autumns is warm and rich in color, often a mix of medium to dark browns, auburn, or warm shades of chestnut.

True Autumn: Hair for True Autumns is warm and falls within the medium to dark brown range, exhibiting a natural warmth and richness without being too deep.

Dark Autumn: Hair in the Dark Autumn category is typically deep and rich, ranging from dark brown to black, with warm undertones.

Eye Color:

Soft Autumn: Eyes tend to be dark yet warm in hue (rather than cool or bright) with colors like softer brown, light hazel, or light green with warm undertones.

True Autumn: Eye colors are moderate in intensity and warmth, often featuring shades of medium to warm brown, amber, or green.

Dark Autumn: Eyes in this category often have warm, deep tones like rich brown, hazel, warm green, or warm hazel.

Contrast Level:

Soft Autumn: Soft Autumns have a soft level of contrast between hair, skin, and eye color.

True Autumn: True Autumns also have a moderate level of contrast, providing a balanced and natural appearance.

Dark Autumn: Dark Autumns have a higher level of contrast between their hair, skin, and eyes, creating a striking and vibrant look.

The Soft Autumn Color Palette

Picture the Soft Autumn palette as a canvas mirroring the gentle transition from summer to autumn. It’s that magical moment when nature begins to shift its colors and autumn gracefully steps into the spotlight after the vibrant days of summer.

Soft Autumn celebrities include Kate Winslet, Thandiwe Newton, Elizabeth Olsen, and Drew Barrymore.

soft autumn color palette wardrobe

Best Jewelry Metals for Soft Autumns

Soft Autumns can have it both ways—with a neutral yet slightly warm undertone, your skin is harmonious with both gold and silver. But when it comes to texture, opt for brushed or matte metal over polished so your dark features shine. Opt for shades like soft yellow gold, peach gold, or rose gold, which add a soft and complementary warmth to your skin tone. Copper and bronze are also excellent choices for Soft Autumns as they align with the warm, earthy hues of this palette.

Consider incorporating gemstones that align with the Soft Autumn color spectrum, like amber, citrine, peridot, or carnelian. These gemstones harmonize well with the warm and earthy tones of the Soft Autumn palette.

Best Makeup & Nail Color for Soft Autumns

Muted colors are favored across the board for Soft Autumns. Makeup should be neutral, slightly warm-toned rather than either cool (blue-based) or super warm (yellow or orange-based) to complement your gentle contrast. Since your features are soft, bright and bold colors can easily throw you off balance. Instead, look for muted colors—but don’t be afraid of a little shimmer. For a neutral mani, consider muted rose pinks or go bolder with muted reds.

Best Colors For a Soft Autumn Wardrobe

Neutrals are shades of beige, navy blue, off-white, and shades of brown. Black, white, and grey may be your go-to’s, but they’re less harmonious with your skin tone, draining you of color and more likely to bring out the darkness under your eyes. Warm, earthy, muted with a vintage feel. Accents colors are muted, warm-toned shades.

Since your colors are low-contrast, low-contrast outfits complement your features best. Combinations of linen, nudes, and soft off-whites are always a hit, but consider adding in a muted blue, green, or rose accent when you’re feeling adventurous.

The True Autumn Color Palette

The True Autumn palette lands right in the middle of autumn’s peak richness. The leaves are fully transitioned to orange and yellow, and a warm tone is in full effect with no hint of blue or cool tones in sight.

True Autumn celebrities include Julianne Moore, Shailene Woodley, Jennifer Lopez, Ana de Armas, and Beyoncé.

true autumn color palette wardrobe

Best Jewelry Metals for True Autumns

True Autumns have a very warm undertone, meaning you align best with warm-toned metals like gold, brass, bronze, and copper.

Consider incorporating gemstones that align with the True Autumn color spectrum like amber, tiger’s eye, topaz, and jasper. These gemstones add a touch of warmth and elegance, accentuating the beauty of the True Autumn color palette.

Best Makeup & Nail Color for True Autumns

Similar to Dark and Soft Autumn, True Autumns should avoid makeup with blue or cool undertones and opt for warm colors that enhance (rather than hide) your features. Think muted neutrals like peach and rose. Try a muted blush pink on your nails for a neutral look or make it fun with an olive green.

Best Colors For a True Autumn Wardrobe

For True Autumns, neutrals include off-white and cream, with the addition of warm browns and navy rather than black. Your accent colors are very warm but with a muted tone. No one wears mustard like you, but you can also pull off a rest-toned red or deep burgundy. And you’re a rarity in that you can even pull off orange!

The Dark Autumn Color Palette

Imagine the Dark Autumn palette as a canvas reflecting the deep, rich hues at the end of autumn—the moment when nature flaunts intense colors just before the transition to winter.

Dark Autumn celebrities include Natalie Portman, Julia Roberts, Meghan Markle, Halle Berry, and Rashida Jones.

dark autumn color palette wardrobe

Best Jewelry Metals for Dark Autumns

Dark Autumns, with their warm and neutral undertones, radiate with both gold and silver jewelry, but the metal matters. Embrace the rich shades of gold and brass with vintage-style finishes to amplify your dark features.

Copper, akin to the burnished leaves of autumn, is a perfect metal choice for Dark Autumns. Its reddish-brown tones complement the warmth of this palette and add a touch of opulence to your jewelry. Bronze, with its luxurious warmth, is also an excellent option that resonates with the deep, earthy hues of Dark Autumn.

When it comes to gemstones, opt for amber, citrine, garnet, peridot, or smoky quartz—gemstones that perfectly harmonize with the deep, warm tones of the Dark Autumn palette.

Best Makeup & Nail Color for Dark Autumns

Dark Autumns should opt for colors that embrace your neutral warmth rather than either cool (blue-based) or super warm (yellow or orange-based). Your coloring is prime for more intense neutrals but bright and bold colors can easily throw you off balance. However, a deep red lip that complements your golden undertones is a must. Same for nail color—embrace the mystery of deep, rich tones.

Best Colors For a Dark Autumn Wardrobe

Think of Dark Autumn as the end of the season—you can handle deep, bold colors. And while jet blacks are not harmonious with your complexion, charcoals and dark browns make you shine. Your neutrals are warm, with more yellow in them than grey. Think ecru, caramel, and cappuccino. Your accents are beautifully rich—deep plums, magentas, forest greens, and warm pinks.

It’s time to officially admit: my high heel days are over. (Not that I ever actually mastered a solid strut.) Over the summer, I actually left a pair of old heels at a neighborhood block party and I’ve been too embarrassed to go back and pick them up. Is it a sign? Maybe. I’ve learned that leaning sneakers that are both chic and comfortable is a life hack I’m happy to adopt.

Considering the amount of walking I do every day as an urban dweller, heels no longer fit my lifestyle. And the French girl aesthetic is proof that you don’t need heels to feel stylish—in fact, sneakers might be the more on-trend pick. So, I’m happily investing in the best sneakers to elevate my fall outfits moving forward. And my feet couldn’t be happier about it.

15 Best Sneakers for Every Fall Adventure

If you’re ready to give up the uncomfortable grind for shoes you’ll never want to take off, you’ve come to the right place. I scoured the internet for all the best sneakers I’m loving this season. From timeless treads to feminine spins on the classic sporty style—ahead, discover the pairs that are dominating closets everywhere this season.

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Freda Salvador Eda D’Orsay Sneakers

These are the holy grail of comfy meets chic. I wore these almost every single day I was in Italy last summer and never once experienced blisters on my heels or needed to swap them out mid-day. (Note: I do recommend breaking them in before long-haul walks.)

adidas Originals NORA shoes

I’ve been on the (admittedly, specific) hunt for a pair of olive or dark green shoes. For the price point and color combo, Adidas comes through.

Aimé Leon Dore x New Balance T500 Tennis Oxfords

ALD’s latest collaboration with tennis star Coco Gauff has flown off the online shelves after she won the US Open. But you’re in luck—you can still snag a pair of the black and green oxfords.

Nike x Billie Ellish Air Force 1 “Triple White” sneakers

Does anyone else follow Nike collabs religiously? While I know this is another pair of white sneakers, I love the simplicity and design of this one.

Sézane Jack Trainers

Speaking of cool French girls, these Sézane lace-up leather trainers are on my wishlist for fall. I can already envision pairing these with a cool pair of denim and a trench coat.

lululemon Strongfeel Training Shoe

While these are specifically made for performance and training, I like that the natural ivory color combo can be worn with a neutral outfit to keep you from looking like athlete-of-the-year when you want to lean more casual.

VANS Classic Slip-On Checkered Shoe

You can’t go wrong with a true classic. I love that VANS has expanded its color range, and because I’ve been trying to add more color to my wardrobe, these Golden Brown checkered sneakers are high on my list.

LOEWE Ballet Runner

I preface this with these are a splurge, but I absolutely love every color combo and look of LOEWE’s sneakers. They’re simple and not overly brand-heavy with a logo that leans cool and unassuming—which is the era I’m in.

Nike Cortez

For a similar option as the LOEWE’s in an identical colorway, the Cortez’s are another classic that never go out of style. These are some of my most comfortable shoes.

adidas Samba OG Shoes

Another classic that seems to be the hit with celebrities from Kendall Jenner to Hailey Beiber and everyone in between. This pair takes me straight back to the mid-90s. I never thought that the same sneakers I wore in middle school could pair perfectly with a silk slip dress, but here we are.

Lacoste L003 Neo Sneakers

When I think of classic Lacoste, I think of the brand’s signature white tennis shoes. But when I saw these in Paris, I loved them even more in person. If you’re looking for a chunky neutral or a pop of color to liven up an outfit, these are so fun.

GANNI Mixed Media Low Top Sneaker

Show of hands for all GANNI Girls out there? I didn’t get to snag anything from their New Balance collab (some sizes left if you’ve got small feet!), but these are a close second to cool and universal.

Target Universal Threads Persephone Sneakers

These remind me a lot of Chloe’s Nama sneakers for a major fraction of the price ($700!). Comes in three different colorways so even if you stock up on the trifecta, you’d still save significantly.

Reebok x Victoria Beckham Club C Sneakers

Ever since I saw Common Projects do a light blue leather sneaker, I’ve been on the hunt for something similar. These fit the bill.

PUMA x Liberty Slipstream Sneakers

If you love bold prints or florals, these are for you. Puma partnered with Liberty of London, known for their iconic floral prints (and collabs with MANY other brands). I find these fun to dress up any outfit as the focal point piece.

“Wow, you’re really going for a look.” My husband gestured to my side of the closet and I followed his gaze toward the growing category of cream tops hanging in a row. Moving down the line, a collection of muted, sky blues and cotton candy pinks now hung in the place where burnt orange, forest green, black, and white once lived. And he’s right, I am going for a look. One that makes my eyes pop and my skin tone even. My closet reflects the journey I’ve been on for the last few months—to discover my “season” by exploring color analysis.

How Color Analysis Will Change the Way You Get Dressed

Not the most noble journey, I’ll admit. But I’m on a greater quest to diminish decision fatigue in my life and getting dressed (see also: going shopping) was wearing me out. Personally, I want to feel like myself in my clothes. This translates to silhouettes that reflect my style, fabrics that are comfortable and easy to move in, and colors that complement and enhance my skin tone. I’ve got those first two down. As for colors…

I’d heard the seemingly age-old, “I’m an autumn,” phrases thanks to the bestselling 1980s book Color Me Beautiful by Carole Jackson. But, like hot rollers, I assumed it was dated. However, when color analysis and “getting your colors done” began to pop up on my feed—along with the stunning before and afters that seemed to make people literally GLOW simply by swapping out a grey top for green—I sat to attention. (I also ordered a set of rollers this week but that’s for another story.)

Now, it needs to be said that a lot of this conversation around finding your best colors IS quite dated, in the way that the language was written mostly for white women. Thankfully, thanks to stylists like Cocoa Styling on YouTube, and one of my favorite Instagram color styling accounts, Curate Your Style, there are now more resources for women of color.

So, let’s address the big question: How do I figure out what season I am? The answer, at least for me, wasn’t that simple. I took quizzes and uploaded photos of my face to AI apps—but I still wasn’t sure. There are many professional color analysts who can help you determine your season and perhaps I’ll take that road in the future. But for now, I’m going the long way. And by that I mean, following a few Instagram accounts, thrifting colors in my season (I suspect I’m a Summer), and wearing them to see how I feel.

So, how do you find out your season? Let’s dig a little deeper.

woman wearing brown writing in a journal

The Four Color Seasons in Color Analysis

Before we dive into the seasons, what they mean, and which one you might be, remember that ultimately this is all in good fun. You can (and should!) wear any color that makes you feel good. As much as we love to sit within these “categories of being,” (it’s why we can’t resist a good quiz) the truth is that we’re nuanced creatures. If a color system ever makes you feel like you’re being put in a box, you have full permission to break that box down.

That said, we all know the feeling when we put something on and it just WORKS. Your eyes look brighter, your skin tone seems to even out, and dark circles disappear. You feel confident. When you know your colors, it makes shopping easier—and takes the guesswork out of getting dressed. That’s because what you’re wearing shares the same natural color dimensions of your hair, eyes, and skin. Your best colors will enhance your natural coloring, whereas others might make you appear pale or tired.

Of the four seasons, there are two over-arching types: warm (Springs and Autumns) and cool (Winters and Summers). If you’re in the warmer seasons, you’ll favor more yellow tones whereas cool seasons favor more blues.

What season are you?

If you’re trying to find out your season at home, there are three components that can help determine where you stand.

1. Discover your undertone

Start by looking at the veins on your wrist. Hold your wrist up to the light and check the color of your veins. If they look more blue, you’re probably cool-toned. If they lean greenish, you’re likely warm-toned. If you need a little help deciphering, I found the Neutone app to be helpful—and it’s free!

2. Consider contrast

Contrast (or value) considers the scale of lightness to darkness between your eyes, skin, and natural hair color. For example, you’re high contrast if your skin is fair, you’ve got jet-black hair, and cool-toned eyes. Alternatively, darker-toned skin against lighter hair and dark eyes indicates low contrast.

Understanding your contrast level helps you choose colors that create a harmonious balance with your natural features. High-contrast individuals tend to look best in bold, contrasting colors, while low-contrast individuals look more flattering in softer, tonal color combinations. Winters and Springs tend to be high contrast whereas Summers and Autumns are lower.

3. Look at chroma, or, softness vs. clarity

Depending on where you fall in the seasons, your natural features favor a softer hue vs. a brighter one for a more harmonious look. If you’re categorized as Summer or Autumn, you’ll typically have a softer overall appearance and are flattered by soft, tonal color combinations. Summers have cool undertones and often look best in soft, pastel shades, while Autumns have warm undertones and are flattered by rich, earthy, and muted colors.

Whereas, if you’re Winter or Spring, you’ll typically have more clarity and boldness in your overall appearance. Winters have cool undertones and look stunning in jewel-toned colors like royal blue and emerald green. Springs have warm undertones and shine in vibrant colors like bright orange and sunny yellow. Bold colors enhance your natural features and create a dynamic look.

Analyzing Each Season

While there aren’t any true “rules” to color analysis—again, you genuinely can wear whatever color you want—here are some general guides for each color season. We’re just going to cover the four main seasons here, but color analysts have broken them down even further by identifying 12 sub-types for a more thorough evaluation.

Spring

Springs have a high contrast with warm undertones. They often have light, warm-toned hair and fair to medium skin. Springs shine in vibrant and warm color combinations.

Celebrities in the Spring color season include Jessica Chastain, Emma Stone, Rihanna, Blake Lively, Kate Hudson, and Brittany Snow.

Vein Test: Start by examining the color of your wrist veins. Springs typically have veins that appear more blue or green. If your veins lean toward green, this suggests warm undertones, which may align with Spring if other characteristics match.

Eye and Hair Color: Springs usually have warm-toned eyes like hazel, light blue, green, or warm brown, and their natural hair colors can range from light to medium warm shades, such as strawberry blonde, golden blonde, or light to medium brown.

How Colors Make You Feel: Pay attention to how you feel when you wear different colors. Springs typically look their best in soft, warm, and vibrant colors like coral, peach, sunny yellow, and mint green. If these colors make your complexion appear more radiant and healthy, you might be a Spring.

Jewelry Metals: Springs often look better in warm metals like gold, brass, or copper. If you find that gold jewelry complements your skin tone more than silver, that’s another sign that you might be a Spring.

Summer

Summers typically have low contrast between their features. They often have light or ash-blonde hair, light skin, and cool-toned eyes. Summers look stunning in soft, pastel colors and muted shades that harmonize with their gentle contrast.

Celebrities in the Summer color season include Emily Blunt, Allison Williams, Barbara Palvin, Leona Lewis, Caitriona Balfe, Emilia Clarke, and Miranda Kerr.

Vein Test: Summers typically have bluish or purplish veins. If your veins appear more blue than green, this suggests you have cool undertones, aligning with the Summer season.

Eye and Hair Color: Summers often have light, cool-toned eyes (blue, green, or gray) and light to medium ash-brown or blonde hair.

How Colors Make You Feel: Pay attention to how you feel when you wear certain colors. Summers typically look best in soft, muted, and cool colors. If pastel shades and cool-toned colors like lavender, soft pink, and powder blue make your complexion appear more vibrant and healthy, you’re likely a Summer.

Jewelry Metals: Summers typically look better in silver or white gold due to their cool undertones. If silver jewelry enhances your skin tone more than gold, it’s another clue that you might be a Summer.

Autumn

Autumns also have low contrast but with warm undertones. They often have warm hair colors, warm-toned eyes, and medium to dark skin. Autumns thrive in rich, earthy color combinations like deep rust and olive green.

Celebrities in the Autumn color season include Jennifer Lopez, Keira Knightley, Doja Cat, Elizabeth Olsen, Jessica Alba, Sofia Richie, and Beyonce.

Autumns typically look best in warm, earthy, and rich colors like deep oranges, warm browns, olive greens, and mustard yellows.

Winter

Winters typically have high contrast between their features. They have dark hair, fair skin, and often, bright or deep eye colors. These individuals look striking in bold, high-contrast color combinations like pure white and black.

Celebrities in the Winter color season include Zooey Deschanel, Janelle Monáe, Alexis Bledel, Lucy Liu, Lupita Nyong’o, Viola Davis, and Selena Gomez.

Vein Test: Winters typically have bluish or purplish veins, indicating cool undertones. If your veins appear more blue than green, this suggests you have cool undertones, aligning with the Winter season.

Eye and Hair Color: Winters often have cool-toned eyes, such as deep blue, gray, or green, and cool-toned hair colors like jet black, deep brown, or ash blonde. If your natural eye and hair colors align with these cool tones, it’s a strong sign that you’re a Winter.

How Colors Make You Feel: Pay attention to how you feel when you wear certain colors. Winters typically look best in bold, high-contrast colors like deep jewel tones and pure white. If these colors make your complexion appear more vibrant and healthy, you’re likely a Winter.

Jewelry Metals: Experiment with silver and gold jewelry. Winters often look better in silver or white gold due to their cool undertones. If silver jewelry enhances your skin tone more than gold, it’s another clue that you might be a Winter.

Final Thoughts

Now, it’s time to play! If you think you might fall within a certain season, try wearing those colors and see how it feels. Switch out your jewelry and see how it looks against your skin tone. In my experience, color analysis takes time and testing to really understand. I never thought I’d purchase a muted purple set, but here we are. And I love it.

Finally, remember that while color analysis can be a helpful guide for choosing flattering colors, personal style and preferences also play a significant role. While color analysis offers valuable guidelines, you do you—embrace the colors that make you feel confident and beautiful, whether they align with your season or not.

Fall Denim Trend #1: Barrel Leg Cut

The barrel leg cut is making waves this season. These wide-leg pants taper at the ankle, creating a distinct barrel shape. While it’s undoubtedly a fashion-forward statement, it’s not for everyone. If you love straight-leg denim in your wardrobe, consider the barrel leg as its stylish cousin.

However, if you’re more expansive in the hips or shorter, it might be best to steer clear of this trend initially. Start with a milder barrel leg style, and if you love it, experiment with more exaggerated versions.

Fall Denim Trend #2: Long Denim Skirts

If you grew up in the 90s, you might feel a sense of déjà vu with this viral trend. This fall, they’re back in a big way, introducing an A-line shape and longer lengths. What’s great about this trend is its versatility. Pair it with a fitted tank for a casual look, or dress it with a blazer or leather jacket. Long denim skirts offer endless possibilities, especially when it comes to styling with your favorite fall boots.

Fall Denim Trend #3: Head-To-Toe Denim

The head-to-toe denim look is making a comeback, a trend that never truly disappears. The key to nailing this trend is matching your denim pieces. Avoid highly contrasting denim, but stick to close shades if you can’t match them perfectly. You can also explore denim dresses or jumpsuits as a less intimidating entry into this trend.

Fall Denim Trend #4: Designer Denim

Investing in quality denim is always a smart move. Fall 2023 denim trends are witnessing an influx of designer brands launching their denim lines. Even budget-friendly denim can look fantastic if it fits well, but designer denim tends to last longer and offers superior quality. Listen to the Second Life podcast with Libby Page, Net-a-Porter’s marketing director, for more insights on this topic. If you find the perfect pair that makes you feel like a million bucks, don’t hesitate to splurge!

Fall Denim Trend #5: Fashionable Flares

Flares are back. (Did they even go anywhere?) And they’re making a statement this season. Whether you prefer embellished, slit, oversized, ombre, or patchwork styles, there’s a flare for everyone. Embrace the drama and uniqueness that flares bring to your denim collection.

The Takeaway

As you navigate the exciting world of fall 2023 denim trends, remember that fashion is a personal journey. What matters most is finding the styles that make you feel confident and comfortable. Whether you’re into barrel leg cuts, long denim skirts, head-to-toe denim, designer denim, or fashion-forward flares, embrace the trends that resonate with your style and make this denim season your best one yet!

I’ve had a major glow-up over the years. Partly because I learned how to simultaneously tame and show off my thick curls, but mostly because I’ve honed my style. And as we shift into the colder months, you can bet I’m taking this skill into curating my autumnal closet—and all the best fall basics I’ll have on rotation from now until spring.

Obsessing over my style board on Pinterest has been a huge source of inspiration in my sartorial shifts. But trust me: it’s serious work (wink). I have a monthly practice where I audit and delete images that no longer inspire me, import new looks from my Instagram saved folder (pro tip), and even have a widget that refreshes every hour with another favorite look. I take my style seriously.

Doing this consistently over the last couple of years has not only helped me figure out and evolve my personal style but it’s allowed me to create a very efficient shopping list. It’s simple—all you have to do is gather your favorite inspiration images, put on a fun playlist, and recreate as many looks as you can using only your current fall wardrobe. And believe me, that’s where the tried-and-true, best fall basics come in handy.

The Best Fall Basics to Wear This Season

Go through this process once, and you’ll quickly realize that you need to track down the perfect sweater, jacket, or pair of boots to take your wardrobe to the next level. With this method, I’ve transformed my closet from an uninspired collage of trends to a collection full of fall basics and neutral colors that I can endlessly mix and match.

But know this: The perfect closet doesn’t have to be a rigid capsule wardrobe. However, it does have to withstand trends and reflect who you are. With that in mind, keep scrolling for the best fall basics and essentials our editors swear by—this season and the next!

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Madewell The Signature Trench Coat

This coat makes all my effortless French girl dreams come true. In this neutral color, it will layer just as easily over a t-shirt and jeans as on any other fall outfit. Obsessed.

Gap Double-Breasted Blazer

Did you get the memo? Cardigans are out and blazers are IN. I’ve seen so many classic blazers ranging from the perfect plaid to classic neutrals. This one is the perfect mix.

Reformation Kendi Denim Midi Dress

Nothing says fall quite like a good head-to-toe denim look. I am particularly partial to this Reformation number because it can go from day to night in a snap. It’s all in the accessories. Swap out your work bag for a smaller satchel, add a fun earring, and keep your heeled boots. This dress is the perfect length for any occasion.

Banana Republic Factory Wide-Leg Jumpsuit

Not only do jumpsuits automatically make you look put together, but they take all the effort out of planning an outfit. Perfect for work, lunch, or a wine night by the fire, this short-sleeved denim jumpsuit will easily become your go-to. I love mixing my jumpsuit with the fall trend du jour: ballet flats. But if I’m feeling like something more timeless, heeled boots make for a casual, yet chic seasonal look.

Madewell Layton Midi Slip Dress

Nap dresses are forever, but we love the simple, streamlined ease of a slip dress. The good news is that you can take it with you from season to season. While in the summer we paired this dress with sandals, in the fall, we like to layer up with tights, a cozy sweater, lug sole boots, and a scarf to top things off.

Everlane The Ribbed Mock Neck Midi Dress

This dress is the perfect mix of flattering and fitted while also being unbelievably comfy. Throw on a pair of statement earrings and you’re all set—this is a one-and-done sort of outfit.

Quince 100% Leather Motorcycle Jacket

Every timeless wardrobe needs a good leather jacket. And while many real-deal picks will set you back hundreds in price, this affordable option looks even better. We love the laidback appeal that’s nonetheless undeniably sexy. Consider this your ticket to cool girl fall.

Jenni Kayne Pleated Skirt

Maxi skirts are everywhere this season, but luckily, they’ll never go out of style. While this is on the expensive side, the investment is worth it. The timeless structure and quality design ensure you’ll be wearing it for years to come. It can be styled in endless ways, and worn just as easily to the office as for a date night out. — Isabelle, Managing Editor

Haven Well Within Organic Cotton Shaker Stitch Cardigan

I envision cozying up in this cardigan with a full monochromatic look, head to toe. It’s relaxed while still feeling chic, and can look cozy, classy, or sexy depending on how you style it. (Bonus: You’ll reach for it whenever you need an extra layer of comfort when working from home.)

Faherty Stretch Cord Wide Leg Pant

Admittedly, these retro pants are slightly outside of my comfort zone. But rest assured, they are so versatile and equally chic. They pair beautifully with boots, heeled mules, and white sneakers. They’re also the perfect accouterment to your fave long-sleeve (or perfect t-shirt) and cozy vest.

alo High-Waist Dreamscape Trouser

Trousers have become one of my favorite wardrobe pieces. They always look chic and are easy to dress up for a night out or a casual look with sneakers and a tee. I have this pair in both colors and they always get compliments.

Abercrombie & Fitch Vegan Leather 90s Relaxed Pant

It took me a while to realize that yes, anyone can truly pull off leather pants. These look stunning paired with a t-shirt to run errands, a black body suit to go out, and a button-down for work.

Madewell Square-Neck Long-Sleeve Crop Tee

A wardrobe essential. Don’t take my word for it, buy it now and thank me later. This tee has the perfect scoop neck and material that’s light and cozy without being fully transparent. (Which, let’s admit, is the worst quality in a white t-shirt.) Size up for a looser fit.

SKIMS Long Sleeve Crew Neck Bodysuit

This perfect crewneck bodysuit gives me 90s supermodel vibes in the best possible way. It’s soft, and stretchy, and creates the sleekest silhouette under blazers or on its own with vintage jeans.

Haven Well Within Fleece Rib Trim Joggers

Far too often, the sweatpants in our drawer are stretched out and ill-fitting—what we reach for when we really don’t care about looking pulled together. But I believe that every fall wardrobe in 2023 should have a perfectly cut pair of sweatpants that can go from workout class to lunch date paired with a trench and cool sneakers. These are super soft and will make you feel sporty on even your laziest day.

Reformation Flounce Skirt

This is the perfect mini skirt that pairs just as well with a chunky oversized sweater as with a basic tee. While this classic black mini is trending, I also think this is one of those essential wardrobe staples that you can wear through most seasons, while still looking timeless.

NAADAM The Essential Cashmere Sweater

When the temperatures begin to dip, I start to crave chunky woven knits. But even during the coziest season of the year, I like to keep my looks streamlined. This is the perfect, affordable sweater that won’t pill and the softness lasts forever. You’ll want one in every color.

Madewell The Wyckoff Chelsea Lugsole Boot

These are my favorite pair of boots because they’re both stylish and actually comfortable to walk in. I love that they button up almost any look and pair as perfectly with cuffed jeans as they do with cozy socks over leggings. An instant fall fave.

Tecovas The Jamie

The cowboy obsession continues. While it may seem like a niche trend, I’ve discovered that cowboy boots pair with all of the best fall basics. From my long, flowy dresses to denim skirts to cozy cords, this pair is the perfect statement piece that melds function with style. Pro tip: This pair is expensive, but one of the best for authentic cowboy boots you can trust will last for years.

This classic, yet on-trend shoe will last you forever. And while they give any outfit a preppy appeal, they can pair beautifully with just about any style or aesthetic.

White + Warren Cashmere Travel Wrap

I love that you can dress this wrap up or down and it’s a go-to for travel. Wear as a scarf for a bit of drama or a shawl to keep you warm. There’s nothing like cozy cashmere on your skin in the cooler weather.

A New Day™ Gold Multi Tube Hoop Earrings

If you buy one accessory this season, make it a pair of gold hoops. They look good with anything and can even elevate a simple sweatsuit. The perfect outfit topper.

TIGI Bed Head Hair Wax Stick

While this isn’t technically a wardrobe piece, it’s a style hack that I will bring with me into fall. I started slicking my hair back in a bun after being at the beach and feeling too lazy to wash my hair, but now I can’t stop. Something about a slicked-back bun with some fun earrings elevates every outfit—even a turtleneck and jeans. Plus, this wax stick is foolproof for those who need some help in the hair styling department.

Finish this sentence: “You’re never fully dressed without ___.” What comes to mind? A pair of earrings, a whimsical nail color, or perhaps a smile? I heard once that personal style is about the details, the little touches you add to your outfits that make you, you. I like this theory for a number of reasons. Firstly, it means anyone can achieve it—whether you prefer statement pieces or a neutral capsule wardrobe. It also means style isn’t reserved for special occasions. You can put a little touch of your personality in everything from your brunch outfits to your morning school drop-off looks. Style is the little things you’re never fully dressed without—the special-to-you pieces you’ll never take off. And now, more and more people are taking this mantra literally with permanent jewelry.

For many of us, our most personal pieces belong in our jewelry collections. Wedding rings, signature necklaces—anything with a level of sentimentality attached. Permanent jewelry is a trend that takes the familiar concept of friendship bracelets (plus every cool girl’s favorite accessory: anklets) and makes them more grown up.

Instead of stringing together beads and charms at camp, the permanent jewelry trend has become a ritual among best friends, family members, and more. It’s the matching tattoos of the #quietluxury era. And, whether you get a matching pair with a friend or on your own, it’s an instant way to showcase your personal style.

The Rise of Permanent Jewelry

If you kept up to date on the niche NYC trends of 2017, you might have heard chatter about the darling of the dainty jewelry world, Catbird. As an effortlessly cool Brooklyn-based brand, its ascent into cult-status territory came as no surprise. Catbird debuted its permanent bracelets in 2017, offering “zapping” sessions, aka, the opportunity for customers to get outfitted with a permanent gold chain on their wrist.

? Au Revoir – Sweet After Tears

Now, permanent jewelry is all the rage, garnering millions of TikTok views. You might be familiar with permanent jewelry like the iconic Cartier Love bracelets, but this new trend offers a more subtle—and affordable—way to access the summer’s hottest jewelry craze.

All over social media, people are sharing their permanent jewelry stories. Attending a pop-up in your city is a fun girl’s day activity. Scheduling an appointment for your bridal party is the new “it” shower trend. Birthdays, too. Some brands even do private events.

What’s great is that it looks good on everyone. Yet, permanent jewelry adds something personal and unique to your every outfit. True sartorial timelessness.

What is permanent jewelry?

Permanent jewelry usually refers to bracelets. However, some people also get welded necklaces or anklets. The process is pretty simple. Instead of using a clasp to secure the chain around your wrist, neck, or ankle, jewelers weld (Catbird calls it “zapping”) the piece of jewelry onto you in a process that takes less than five minutes.

Can you ever take off a permanent bracelet?

Permanent jewelry can go pretty much everywhere with you. You can shower, swim, and work out wearing your jewelry. Made of high-quality materials like solid gold or white gold, permanent jewelry is made not to tarnish or rust. It can even go through TSA airport security.

The only pause for concern is if you’re getting an MRI. Technically, solid gold chains shouldn’t be magnetic, so you should be good to go. You can test this yourself by placing a magnet to your wrist and seeing if it attracts. However, consult your doctor just to be sure. If they insist, you’ll probably need to remove it.

You may also need to remove permanent jewelry because of swelling due to injury, pregnancy, heat, or anything else that makes your wrist expand. If it ever feels uncomfortably tight, it’s best to remove your permanent jewelry sooner rather than later.

How to Remove a Permanent Bracelet

The good news is, it’s pretty simple. In the event that you need to remove your forever jewelry, just take a pair of scissors and clip it at the clasp. If you save your bracelet, you can take it back to get welded on again for a small fee.

Where to Get Permanent Jewelry

Looking for a welding appointment near you? Here are some brands to know. (Hot tip: With the trend all the rage this summer, book asap to guarantee availability.)

DIY Permanent Jewelry

While we prefer leaving permanent jewelry applications to the professionals, don’t worry if there’s nowhere near you to get zapped. Some innovative Etsy shops have just what you’re looking for. When searching for the best permanent jewelry kits, look for high-quality materials and an easy-to-use application process.

Below is our favorite DIY permanent jewelry kit to get you started on the trend and instantly elevate your personal style. See you on the other side of the zap!

What does it say about me if my Pinterest feed is dominated by soft linens on grass, wine glasses catching a glint of the sun, straw baskets filled with flowers, and rosé under dappled light? I don’t even have to type “picnic aesthetic” into the search bar—it just knows. I am a girl on a mission to romanticize my life and when it comes to snacks under the sun, do not even come at me with that red gingham print.* I need soft and supple. I need chunks of baguettes and wide-brimmed hats. I need a dress that declares, “I am the main character in a love story.”

woman sitting in field of wildflowers reading

And the thing about these charming picnic situations is that they all scream one thing: effortless. However, therein lies the problem for me. I’m known for rocking up to a picnic table with a Yeti cooler filled will an assortment of snacks, “just in case.” I want alllll the aesthetics of a dreamy picnic AND the simplicity.

Thankfully, Camille and the team were on board to bring this Pinterest-worthy vision to life. Could this picnic aesthetic truly be so easy and yet so inspiring? The answer, I’m thrilled to say, is oui! Armed with a handful of perfectly Parisian picnic outfits from (where else?) Sézane and a paired-down spread of five simple items, we set off for an afternoon surrounded by the sounds of summer and the magical Texas wildflowers.

*Don’t be fooled, I’m a full gingham girl for the entire month July.

French Girl-Inspired Picnic Outfit Ideas

Before we pack our picnic basket, let’s talk attire. Surprisingly, what you decide to wear might just be the most important part of this entire picnic ordeal. Though the psychology of fashion is science-backed, I think we can all agree anecdotally that our clothing has an impact on our moods. And while there are some practical non-negotiables when it comes to a picnic outfit (something you can easily sit in, for example), what you choose to wear sets the mood for the entire experience.

When it comes to channeling effortless romance, no one does it better than the Paris-born Sézane. The high-quality, feminine pieces go beyond the trends. Dresses, shirting, pants, and accessories are timeless closet staples—for picnics and beyond.

Outfit Option 1: A Billowy Dress That’s Made for Easy Movement

A go-to dress is essential for summer. Personally, I’m always looking for something with a little romance to it—a frill, lace, a puff sleeve—so that I can dress it down with a sneaker or up with a strappy sandal. When it comes to a picnic, you want something that doesn’t pinch or ride up, so the more volume the better.

Maxi Volume Dress with Embroidery Details

If your ideal dress is one that feels like you’re wearing a tent but doesn’t look like it, this is the dress for you. It’s full volume which means this dress takes up space in the best way. It’s incredibly comfortable with hidden pockets at the waist and majorly brings those main character vibes.

Outfit Option 2: A Shirt and Shorts Combo That’s Classic and Refined

One thing I know for sure is that every chic Parisian has a classic button-down hanging in her closet. And it’s likely this exact one. Channel those summer days of old, running around the neighborhood in denim cutoffs, with a more refined look—perfect for picnic-ing.

The Perfect Denim Shirt

This oversized denim shirt is a staple in any closet. It’s the type of piece that you’ll reach for every day—and, good news, it comes in multiple colors and patterns.

High-Waisted Flare Leg Shorts

Your first impression of these shorts will be the pure quality of both the structure and the fabric. They sell out fast so get them while you can—promise you’ll live in them all summer long.

Rome Shorts, $130

Tortoiseshell Sunglasses in a Timeless Shape

These sunnies have a slight cat-eye that makes them perfectly flattering for nearly every face shape. Grab them in one of four colors.

Chiara Sunglasses, $180

Outfit Option 3: A Shirt Dress That’s the Best of Both Worlds

When you can’t decide between a dress and a casual button-down, there’s a clear answer—the shirt dress. Both breathable for a hot day and chic for aesthetics, it’s a clear option for a picnic outside.

Natural Striped Shirt Dress

The safari-chic vibes take on dress form in this easy-to-wear linen blend outfit. Wear it with or without the belt and revel in the feminine detail on the masculine-inspired look that is the dainty liquette bottom.

Alani Dress, $220

Heritage Leather Clogs

We normally wouldn’t suggest heels for an outdoor excursion but these sturdy clogs are ready for the task. Plus, you can always kick off your shoes for a little grounding along the way.

what to pack for an aesthetic picnic — board with baguette, stone fruit, cheese, and book

What to Pack for an Aesthetic Picnic

I like to think of the picnic aesthetic as impulsive yet poised. It’s “Oh, look! The sun is shining and I absolutely must be outside!” mixed with, “But first, a trip to the market because this kitchen is empty.” Your picnic affair can be a party of one or a date—significant other or otherwise. Either way, all you need for a spread that’s both delicious and (let’s be honest) photo-worthy are these five no-prep items:

 1. Chilled Rosé. A bottle of wine or champagne is easily the crown jewel of any picnic. Sip it slowly and let its effervescence transport you to a world where wildflowers and poetry become your entire personality.
 2. A Fresh Baguette. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from the French is that a baguette is not a baguette unless it is fresh from the boulangerie. But if there isn’t a bakery en route from home to your chosen field of flowers, I won’t tell.
 3. Cheese. Of course, there must be cheese. Grab a single favorite or get crazy and pick up one soft cheese and one hard cheese for contrasting flavors.
 4. Stone Fruit. It’s robust, it’s colorful, and it doesn’t require any slicing. Of course, if you’re picnic-packing outside of summer, choose a seasonal fresh fruit so it tastes best. (Jam also works in a pinch.)
 5. Salty Nuts. Every good spread needs a salty punch to truly make it all sing. We unapologetically packed shelled pistachios for both flavor and color aesthetics.

June Basket with Embroidered Flowers

Forget the bulky picnic basket. This raffia bag is the perfect size to carry all the essentials. It’ll be your go-to all summer long—from market trips to pool days and everything in between.

Natural June Basket, $210

Grab the Necessities

To truly capture the romantic vibe of your picnic, grab a few additional items that will set the stage. First, ditch the traditional picnic blanket for a neutral sheet or tablecloth (this linen table throw was practically made for picnics). Pro tip: we’re after aesthetics but we’re not here to ruin our nice things. Bring a waterproof mat to put underneath your cloth—they’re light and easy to throw in a basket. Next, pack only the essentials to bring your spread to life: a small cheese board, cheese knives, and, of course, a wine glass (or two).

Final Touches to Capture the Picnic Aesthetic

Finally, take your picnic to the next level with the two most romantic things on God’s green earth: words and fresh flowers. Pack a novel or a collection of poetry. Or better yet, bring a journal to write down your own words. And there’s no shame in buying yourself flowers or picking a few along the way. Even a few blooms will add a touch of whimsy to your picnic spot—as if you’ve stepped into your very own secret garden.

picnic aesthetic spread on white linen

To wrap it all up, let’s keep it real. Life is far from romantic all the time. Did we step in multiple ant piles on the way to our ~dreamy~ field location? Absolutely. But this is your moment to embrace the wonders of everyday life, pesky ant piles or not. At the risk of sounding sappy, the joy of living is truly in the journey, and more often than not, it’s in our choices. It’s the lens through which we choose to see life. So, put on rosé colored glasses. Wear the dress. Pour the wine. Pretend to understand the poetry. And embrace the singular moment for what it is—utterly romantic.

The joy of living is truly in the journey, and more often than not, it’s in our choices. It’s the lens through which we choose to see life.

Tell me if you’ve seen it too: In our hyper-connected, digital world, fashion no longer seems to be a matter of personal style. Instead, Y2K trends are in one week, followed by 70s vibes (à la Daisy Jones) a few days later. And don’t get me started on the battle between low-rise and skinny jeans. I’ll take whatever’s comfortable, thank you very much. The point is, as we cycle through core trends, our outfits of the day appear to repeat a templatized structure. But, if you want to break free from the masses, you’ve come to the right place. Today, we’re chatting how to make maximalist fashion your own.

Maximalist Fashion: Tips for Curating a Wardrobe That’s Uniquely You

But first, let’s clarify. “Maximalist” fashion can conjure up ideas of going big or going home. And while we love exploring bright colors and fun prints, especially in the summer, the core ethos aligns with the simple guideline of following your sartorial bliss. So how do you make that happen? I chatted with two of my favorite fashion creators, Courtney Pentimalli and Alejandra Hernandez, to learn how we can all sift through the noise and embrace the style that feels best for us.

Courtney Pentimalli

Courtney runs the online community, The Fair Court. The brand was built around her favorite form of creative expression—getting dressed! She has always felt that putting together an outfit was similar to finalizing a puzzle or creating a collage. It is the epicenter of her journey in experimentation with art, in a physical form. The Fair Court began as a personal platform, but over time has grown into a place where she can share her styling tips and vintage secrets. Courtney loves helping people feel the most comfortable in the things they wear while encouraging sustainability at the same time.

Alejandra Hernandez

Alejandra (goes by Ale) was born and raised in Mexico until 23 when she got married and moved to California. She has always loved exploring her creativity, which inspired her to pursue a degree in architecture. Ale is a content creator and runs the online consignment and thrift store, Vintage Butterfly.

On Defining and Developing a Personal Style

The idea of creating a personal style can feel deeply elusive and impossible to pin down. It’s one of those things that when you see it, you know it. Someone dawns a bold print that wears like an extension of their personality. Or perhaps a coworker rocks an all-black ensemble every day with confidence. And while we love seeing others owning what feels best for them, doing it ourselves can come with a few roadblocks.

Below, Courtney and Ale share their tips on finding and continuously evolving a personal style that’s entirely your own.

Shop with intention.

Like many people, the idleness of the pandemic inspired Courtney to get creative with her closet. “I got really into Etsy—retail therapy was my coping mechanism. People would say how good I was at finding these unique pieces, and I think it came down to being really intentional about what I was looking for.”

Building on this, she adds that shopping with intention honors the intimacy inherent in building a wardrobe that feels like a reflection of yourself. “Knowing your body, what feels good, and what you feel comfortable in is such a deeply personal experience,” Courtney notes.

“I’ve always felt that putting together an outfit is like putting together a puzzle.” — Courtney Pentimalli

So how do you make this happen? It can start with a simple journaling session, reflecting on the styles, prints, colors, and shapes you’re drawn to. From there, jot down what may be getting in the way of wearing these pieces. Is it related to body image? Or perhaps someone made an unkind comment when you wore something out of the norm? Oftentimes, our clothing can touch upon aspects of ourselves that go beyond getting dressed. It can be helpful to discuss these questions with either a therapist or a trusted friend to help you gain clarity.

From there, create a vision board that outlines your intention and visualize the wardrobe you want to build. Gather images on Pinterest or from magazines and create a digital or physical collage that expresses the look and feel you want to exude. You can even add words, phrases, or mantras that capture the energy you want to bring to your looks.

Prioritize comfort.

Ale admits that, though she’s built a dedicated community around owning your unique style on Instagram, she struggles with identifying her aesthetic from time to time. But despite this ebb and flow, she knows that feeling at ease is what’s most important. “I’ve learned that, at the end of the day, I am going to feel most comfortable and happy when I wear what aligns with my true self.”

However, like most things in life, it’s all about striking a balance. She notes that it can be fun to take risks with your style. “You’ll never know if you love something if you don’t try it,” says Ale.

Courtney speaks to the physical element of comfort, encouraging women to embrace the changes our bodies go through over time. “Change is inevitable—own it. Confidence is something that many women struggle with,” says Courtney. But she encourages growing through these changes, letting go of the trends, and embracing what works for you. “Mentally and physically, everything just falls into place once you start wearing what feels best in your body.”

Step outside of what’s marketed to you.

As a style consultant, Courtney sees countless clients holding onto clothes that connect them to a specific experience or that they feel deeply nostalgic about. “Clothes should be a vehicle that help us move throughout the world with confidence,” she says. “Not the other way around.” Again, we may feel that we have to be a certain size or body shape to wear something. But Courtney wants us to let go of that belief immediately.

“So often, we’re not comfortable in the clothes we’re wearing because we’re only selecting what’s been marketed to us. We need to step outside of that box and have fun experimenting with the pieces that resonate.”

Remember: personal style is different for everyone.

Developing your own style is a process—be patient and curious as you discover what resonates with you. While Courtney still loves to look at what’s trending, she’s careful to approach it through a different lens. “I ask myself: Can I buy this vintage? Can I buy this secondhand?

She encourages exploring the trends you find yourself drawn to. However, it’s important to not invest too heavily—financially and emotionally. With our culture of overconsumption and the constant cycling of “-core” trends, it’s easy to burn out. “And,” Courtney adds, “you don’t want to give up that precious closet real estate to a piece that isn’t really you.”

Sparkly handbag.

When it comes to style on social media, how do you tune out the noise and find inspiration versus copying a trend entirely?

“We have to be careful to consume only what makes us grow, what inspires us, and what makes us better,” says Ale. It’s such an important reminder that goes beyond style. Remember: social media is a tool. As users, we’re empowered to direct the algorithm in a way that serves us inspiring, uplifting, and ultimately positive content. And as Ale notes, we can learn by what others are doing on social media and add our own twist. “But remember,” she cautions, “not every trend is for you to adopt.”

“We have to be careful to consume only what makes us grow, what inspires us, and what makes us better.” — Alejandra Hernandez

Courtney views social media similarly, seeing it both as “an amazing place to be inspired and exposed to new things” as well as a reflection of our collective push to overconsume. She admits that she’s had to unlearn some of the patterns she’s experienced by diving deeper into the fashion community online. “It took realizing that those things—that next purchase or piece—weren’t giving me the value I thought they would.”

Again, that’s where intention comes in. “Our money is our power, and where we spend it says a lot about what we support,” Courtney observes. So instead of immediately buying whatever is cheapest and on-trend, she encourages looking to small business owners or stylists who you can build a relationship with and feel good about supporting with your purchase.

If someone wants to have more fun with their style, but is afraid to branch out, how could they build the confidence to try something new?

Courtney’s response underscores the truth that finding your personal style is a process—and one that will be filled with plenty of paradoxes. While it’s important to get specific about the wardrobe you want to build, you can also learn by how you respond emotionally to pieces and patterns. “Don’t think too hard about it,” she says. “Remember, it’s a process and it’s important to reflect on how certain pieces, colors, and shapes make you feel. It’s not about other people complimenting or commenting on what you wear—it’s about what makes you feel vibrant.”

She adds that, when it comes to who you follow, find people on the internet you relate to. Whether you have the same body shape or gravitate toward similar pieces, get inspired by how they wear these styles. Conversely, unfollow anyone who makes you feel fearful to be brave with your style or try something new.

Ale agrees, citing experimentation as a core part of her process. “Take a risk! If you like a trend or a style but think you couldn’t rock it, just try it.” Ultimately, what it comes down to is letting your truth lead the way, but never be afraid to brave and bold with your style.

“It’s not about other people complimenting or commenting on what you wear—it’s about what makes you feel vibrant.” — Courtney Pentimalli

In our always-on, perpetually connected world, there’s obvious appeal in the possibility of a life pulled away from it all. Instead of running from meetings to appointments and trying to cram in a workout amidst the hustle (not to mention a 10-minute meditation), a back-to-roots lifestyle follows a different, slower route. From scrolling through countless Pinterest boards, related TikTok hashtags, and the many Reels dedicated to showcasing this dreamy approach—it’s clear that the cottagecore aesthetic is holding strong.

While the prevailing impression is one of Hill House nap dresses and shelves upon shelves of Penguin classics, there’s more to the cottagecore aesthetic than meets the eye. (Although those are components of the style that I’ll forever obsess over.) Really—it’s an ethos. Cottagecore is a mindset that prioritizes patience with the world, taking the time to sit with nature and observe its delicate intricacies. Those who practice cottagecore and weave its details into their lives know that connection with the people and places we love is the key to a whole and happy life. The ruffles and farmhouse flair are just the beautiful icing on the cake.

For those craving a little more romance in their everyday lives, this is for you. If you want to adopt the cottagecore aesthetic, keep reading for tips, tricks, and the best sources for inspiration.

How to Create the Cottagecore Aesthetic for Yourself

As many of my friends can attest, I’m a self-prescribed homesteading enthusiast. And while I knit, sew, and spend many an evening by candlelight, I can only take my canning and small-scale gardening so far. (I’m a Chicago urbanite.) But the beauty in taking inspiration from an aesthetic and cultivating it for yourself is just that. With the resources available to you, you can find more joy in what you wear, how you decorate your home, and the inspiration you surround yourself with each day.

Let’s dive into the what, why, and how behind the cottagecore aesthetic. Who knows—you might get the itch to fix up a country farmhouse by the end.

What is cottagecore?

Cottagecore romanticizes rural life. While past decades and generations have prioritized the comfort and ease of a technology-driven lifestyle, the cottagecore aesthetic celebrates the exact opposite. Simplicity, traditional skills (those that have largely been phased out by technological advances), and self-reliance are key components. Some of the activities associated with cottagecore include:

 • Sewing/knitting/crocheting your own clothes and linens
 • Gardening and growing your own food
 • Project-based kitchen skills including sourdough, baking, kombucha, etc.
 • Canning and preserving food

But as I alluded to above, there’s also a consciousness that’s an inextricable element of cottagecore. In an article written by Courtney Jay Higgins for The Good Trade, she explores the importance the movement gives to sustainability and developing a deep connection to and appreciation for the land. Personally, I found my way to the cottagecore mindset through Julia Watkins, who before becoming a writer and photographer began her career in conservation. (More on Julia below.)

All that to say is, the trajectory makes sense. Across all areas of life that the cottagecore aesthetic touches—fashion, home, food, and garden—a respect for the materials, plants, animals, and people behind our resources is evident.

With that in mind (and the understanding that cottagecore really isn’t a trend, but a concept that developed as far back as 2,300 years ago), it’s clear that cottagecore goes beyond being a style or something purely visual. Instead, it’s a way of life that can inspire good and beauty in all that we do.

Inspiration for Cottagecore Outfits

That being said, getting dressed with the cottagecore aesthetic in mind is one of the many creative ways you can bring it into your life. Cottagecore as it relates to fashion is defined largely by a traditionally feminine way of dressing. Think: Long, flowing skirts and dresses, whimsical patterns and delicate frills, hair tied back in a bow. Of course, this isn’t to say that to achieve the aesthetic you have to adhere to antiquated views on gender. Much of the cottagecore style can simply be conveyed through a penchant for vintage finds and cozy, comfy layers like a hand-knit sweater or your favorite well-worn socks.

Keep scrolling for some of the brands and creators who do cottagecore best.

@hillhouse vintage

With over half a million followers on Instagram, Paula Sutton knows a thing about effectively bringing the cottagecore aesthetic to life. (Further proof: Her bio reads: “Country Interiors, Gardens, Frocks, Flowers & Cake!”) Her style is cottagecore to a tee: bright prints, florals galore, Peter Pan necklines, and dungarees done to perfection. But what’s even more captivating about Paula’s presence online—and I have to imagine in real life as well—is the infectious joy she exudes in every post and story. While it’s true that social media has long been written off as a highlight reel, I have to believe that what Paula posts is true and authentic bliss with the life she’s created for herself.

@itsmargoroth

Anna Margaret (who goes by Margo) is the queen of thrifting. She regularly shares her vintage-hunting hauls on both her Instagram and YouTube. And you’ll regularly catch her frolicking through flower-flecked fields in a Dôen or Christy Dawn dress (that is to say, cottagecore apparel at its finest). And while her wardrobe does the aesthetic to perfection, be sure to also give her a follow for her cottagecore-inspired interiors. Her home is nothing short of a cozy cottage daydream.

@chloecleroux

As a creator, photographer, author, and plant-based cook, Chloe Crane-Leroux translates the cottagecore aesthetic to the digital sphere with elegance and grace. And though she’s New York-based, you’d never know that she captures most of her content in an urban setting. While she shares slower living through concrete, easy-to-recreate recipes, she also inspires this way of life through thoughtful captions and Reels that deserve a showing at Cannes. (Proof that I’m not exaggerating.) As an aside, her relationship with her mom is Nancy Meyers-level of cuteness. For the cottagecore aesthetic with a French flair, be sure to give Chloe a follow.

Inspiration for a Cottagecore House

PSA: You don’t need a house on ten acres complete with farm animals to create a cottagecore vibe. Even with just 1200 square feet and no outdoor space to my name, I’ve prioritized secondhand quilts, embroidered pillow cushions, and thrifted china to create a general sense of coziness. At the end of the day, you’re after comfort and a home that feels like a warm hug. Whether that’s through candles galore, hand-me-down heirlooms, or simply well-loved pieces, the aim is to make your home a visual reflection of your life’s personal narrative. Everything you give space to should have a story—and these are the creators who do it best.

@clairezinnecker

Friend of the site, Claire Zinnecker’s design talent and eye for potential knows no bounds. Case in point: she transformed this fixer-upper Austin farmhouse (that she found on Facebook Marketplace, mind you) into a true haven of beauty. She’s the founder of Claire Zinnecker Design, an Austin-based boutique interior design firm that crafts spaces with a resonant character and timeless appeal. And while Claire might not describe her aesthetic as cottagecore per se, she has the rare talent of expanding a client’s passions into the look and feel of a space. For more get-ready-to-go-down-a-rabbit-hole design inspo, follow the before and after of her Austin home on @savingidahouse.

@mamawatters

I’ve been a fan of Amanda Watters’ work long before I even got on Instagram. Every week, I ate up Amanda’s stories, seasonal musings, and creative projects on her blog (which she continues to regularly update). She’s translated her talent for writing and photography into a feed that keeps the beauty of a static photo alive. From home vignettes to reflections on motherhood to images that elicit simple joys, Amanda is a must-follow in your cottagecore social media kit. She’s also the founder of Homesong Market, a Kansas City-based home story that can also be shopped online.

@momentsbyjemma

When you need a few moments of blissful social media scrolling, pay Jemma’s feed a visit. You’ll find galettes showcasing every seasonal fruit, idyllic country landscapes, and composed corners of her home that will remind you to seek beauty at every turn. Jemma is also a talented amateur florist. Stunning dahlia arrangements, colorful cosmos, and vases filled with wildflowers have all merited a home on her page. And for true culinary delight, be sure to watch her sourdough English muffin tutorial.

@simply.living.well

Teased above, Julia Watkins is one of my favorite creators who shows the cottagecore aesthetic in action. Not only are her visuals dreamy, but she shares concrete tips to help you build traditional skills. Head to her blog for candle-making tutorials, tips on creating a low-waste home, and more. I also have both of her books, Simply Living Well and Gardening for Everyone on my shelf. Trust: there’s a treasure trove of cottagecore inspiration to be found within each.

Resources for Cottagecore Decor

To bring the cottagecore aesthetic home, I can’t emphasize enough: start making vintage shopping and thrifting a hobby! I love visiting estate sales on the weekend and hunting for pieces that have lived a life before me. I find that when I shop secondhand, the items I bring into my home share a loving energy with the space. That’s part of the magic of shopping with intention.

But if you’re also an avid online shopper, take heart: there are plenty of resources where you can find beautiful pieces and craft your cottagecore home. Below are my favorites.

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Homesong Market

Mentioned above, Amanda Watters has taken her eye for vintage and heirloom-quality pieces and turned it into a beautiful shop. Within home categories that span everything from the bedroom to bathroom to the sweetest pieces for kids, Homesong Market has it all. Amanda has revived the lost art of running a general store and made the experience available for all of us online. But because I want to live the magic in-person, you can bet I’m planning a visit to the Kansas City brick-and-mortar shop soon. Who wants to join?

June Home Supply

June Home Supply is intent on helping homeowners bring a quiet and simple sense of beauty into their homes. The pieces aren’t just stunning to look at. They’re curated to inspire thoughtful moments at home. Whether it’s dinner by candlelight, an afternoon spent reading with tea, or going about your everyday tasks with a sense of mindfulness, June Home Supply’s beautiful assortment makes it all possible.

Casa Zuma

I couldn’t wrap up this guide to the cottagecore aesthetic without highlighting Camille’s lifestyle brand, Casa Zuma. While the overall aesthetic is inspired by Camille’s love of the ocean, the intention runs deeper. Each piece is crafted to inspire presence in your daily life—a core tenet of cottagecore. Items are designed by makers all over the world to help you shape your home’s unique story. It’s a mindset that “sparks connection, nourishes your soul, and makes you feel more alive.” Expressing consciousness, slow living, and thoughtful curation, if that doesn’t describe cottagecore at its most fundamental, I’m not sure what else can.

Lately, life has looked like a busy blur of travel. And while I’ve loved making memories, connecting with friends, and jumping into new experiences, perhaps the most unexpected result of life on the go has been how it’s motivated me to do a closet clean out. Let me explain. Over the past two months, I’ve been traveling at least every other week and living out of a suitcase. That means I’m rotating between the easiest and most versatile outfits that 1) fit in my carry-on and 2) effortlessly take me from day to night.

Those unicorn pieces include my favorite Freda Salvador slip-on sneakers, this cozy Frank & Eileen travel set for the flight, an old DOEN dress that has easily become my most-worn (and complimented) dress, a leather jacket, a few workout outfits, and anything that might be specific to the occasion whether a wedding or work trip.

Grabbing these staples weekly has illuminated the fact that a small portion of my closet is for my tried-and-true staples, minus a few special pieces. And the rest? Nothing seems to be getting worn—and the items are taking up too much precious closet space. Clearly, a closet clean out is calling my name.

5 Tips for an Effective Closet Clean Out

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve Kondo’d my place (yes, Marie Kondo and her KonMari method is now a verb), only to fill it back up with gifted goods from brands, more seasonal items that I thought I’d wear and didn’t, and sadly, the clothes that I mentally can’t get rid of because of how much I spent on them. Every time I walk into my closet, I’m met with overwhelm and sigh to myself: “I have too much!”

Because I don’t have all the time in the world to tackle my closet and go into full-on spring (now summer) cleaning mode, here’s how I’m approaching Project Closet one step at a time. My best advice before you start? Be patient! Each step will take considerable thought and time, but doing this process thoroughly is the only way to create lasting change. Let’s get started!

Brunette woman wearing robe holding jeans up to body in mirror.

Step 1: Start With the Items I Know I’ll Never Wear Again

I have an entire section of my closet filled with cycling kits and gear from my cycling days in 2015-2017. Want to guess the last time I hopped on my road bike? If you guessed 2017, you win. It’s been five years since I’ve “kitted up,” so the likelihood I’ll get on it anytime soon is very low. Thankfully, there’s a huge resale market for high-end cycling gear, so I know I’ll be able to make a little more money back. I’m saving two kits should the temptation to go for a ride ever strike.

Step 2: Assess and Streamline All Duplicates

I reach for the same one cozy sweatshirt whenever I need to relax. Do I really need a closet full of 18 of them, most of which are stiff or not my style? Same with my multiple trench coats and workout tops. In this instance, more is not more and only takes up valuable real estate. The only thing that will stay are my white tees and tanks. I’m prone to spilling and always need a backup!

Step 3: Edit the Items I Rarely Grab

A huge percentage of my closet is filled with clothes that I only grab once or twice a year. Mostly because it doesn’t fit (too big, too small, uncomfortable), but also because the style no longer suits me. For some reason, I have a really hard time with the fact that I don’t have the same style I did even a year ago. It can be difficult for me to let go of these pieces, especially if they were a big investment. If the item can be altered to fit again and I’d wear it, I’ll keep it. If not, it’s out!

Step 4: Donate, Sell, Gift

ThredUp, Poshmark, eBay, Dress for Success, and pals. All options for me to either make a little money back, give to those in need, or gift to a friend I know would get use out of the products. I’ve been kicking my heels doing this because when I have free time, the last thing I want to do is take pictures for a website and have the product hang in my place. But it’s time. My goal is to take a few hours out of every weekend day and make it happen!

Bright, white closet filled with colorful clothes.

Step 5: Set Some Ground Rules for the Future

My sister has a friend who embodies a true minimalist attitude. If she goes shopping, she must remove the same number of items from her closet that she’s bringing into her closet. And she never buys something unless she can use it right now. She has a clear inventory on what she owns, unlike me who forgets about pieces for months at a time.

On another note, my fridge and pantry operate the same way, and I’m often buying the same thing twice because my organization is… non-existent. Sounds like I’ve just unlocked a clear need to hire a professional organizer! (Or take Camille’s kitchen organization advice!)

While the process feels daunting, nothing makes me feel more clear and grounded than a clean and beautiful home. If you’re hesitant to get started, know that I’m right there with you. Doing a full-on closet clean out is a lot, but trust that by removing clutter you’re freeing up space and time that you can devote to the things you love. Happy Kondo’ing!

I’m tired of the lie that neutral is boring. Listen, I’m certainly not a hater of the classic “pop of color,” but also no apologies for the effortless and classic look that is a white t-shirt and jeans with a perfect *chef’s kiss* fit. We at Camille Styles love to celebrate style in all ways, it’s true. However, allow me to state the obvious and say that we love a neutral look. Neutral decor for the home is calming—and the same is true for your closet. Today we’ll prove it, with a cool-not-boring neutral capsule wardrobe collection. Ahead, we’ll show you what you need to get started—and exactly how to style it.

We love a go-to shopping destination. After all, the name of the came when it comes to a capsule wardrobe is simplicity. EVEREVE is a new favorite destination among our editors for literally all the things. Clothing, shoes, and accessories from some of our go-to brands like AGOLDE, Splendid, Citizens of Humanity, Dolce Vita, Frame, Free People, Nation LTD, and more—all in one place.

We’ve partnered with EVEREVE to build out the most conclusive, hard-working, and stylish (obviously) neutral capsule wardrobe. These are your heavy hitters. You’re go-to pieces. Your foundation of fashion from which to build. Care to add color? All for it. Make it a red lip or a shoe pop moment—or keep it cool and calm. Either way, there’s nothing boring about this collection.

How to Build a Neutral Capsule Wardrobe

A capsule wardrobe is a collection of high-quality tops, bottoms, dresses, rompers, shoes, and accessories that can be paired together for a seemingly endless amount of outfits. It’s meant to bring ease and even joy into getting dressed. The trick is building a collection that not only plays well together but ultimately feels and looks like you.

The downside of building a collection is that it takes time and resources—it may feel like a large investment up front. But that’s exactly what it is: an investment. Collecting pieces that are made with high-quality fabrics and materials in classic shapes and styles means you’re removing yourself from the fast-fashion hamster wheel. You’ll wear these pieces for longer, and guarantee you’ll feel better in them, too. Plus, you’ll actually save money in the long run. Here’s how to get started in two easy steps.

Do You Really Know Your Bra Size? The post Do You Really Know Your Bra Size? An Expert Shares How to Find Your Perfect Match appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>
A fact I’m not proud of: I have no idea what my bra size is. Sure, I could work off the guidance the lingerie in my dresser suggests, but I’d be guessing anywhere in the range of 32A to 34C. Yikes. Personally, I’ve been walking around in my day-to-day simply believing that bras are one of the inevitable discomforts that I, as a woman, am destined to face. Alongside my monthly period that I simply can’t find it within me to be grateful for (sorry, but the cramps and mood swings make me a monster), bras have a way of making me feel that I’m simply not doing my femininity “right.” And while comparing breast size examples may provide others with answers, I become all the more confused. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you, but finding the right bra? It’s a whirlwind, y’all.

Breast Size Examples: An Expert on How to Find the Perfect Bra

So, as with everything I’m unsure of or self-conscious about, I went to an expert for answers. Cami Raymond, Senior Design Director for the women’s intimate brand, Ruby Ribbon, equipped me with jaw-dropping insights that completely shifted how I think about bra sizing.

First off? This should have been more obvious to me, but readers: our breasts change over time—not just through puberty. Our weight fluctuates or we may become pregnant—there are plenty of factors at play! As a result, according to Raymond, we should be doing regular bra fittings every 6-12 months. And guess what? You’re probably holding onto a few bras that should have been thrown out a long time ago.

It’s time to clear things up—for you and for me. Below, Raymond answers all of my questions from how often we should switch out our bras to the perfect styles for tricky situations. (That backless dress you’re planning on wearing to your cousin’s wedding? Don’t worry she has the answers.)

Cami Raymond

Cami Raymond is the Senior Design Director at Ruby Ribbon, a women’s intimates, shapewear, and athleisure company. For over 10 years, she’s been helping the company create products that empower women every day. She currently lives in San Francisco with her family, and when she’s not developing products for Ruby Ribbon, she’s pursing her other passion of horseback riding and show jumping.

So few women actually know their bra size. Where would you recommend they start?

You can certainly start by measuring yourself, but I recommend going to a proper or expert bra fitter to get a more accurate measurement. Also, think about what type of fabric you like, the cups you prefer (demi or full coverage), or if you want it to be convertible as you want something like a bra that you’ll potentially be wearing all day to be as comfortable as possible.

How often should we be sized for bras? Or is it a one-and-done scenario?

Getting sized and fitted should happen every six months to a year. Breast size and shape fluctuate continuously throughout our life. Even our bodies change for many reasons such as pregnancy or weight change. Plus, after a lot of wear your bras also lose their shape, so it’s always best to check on your correct size.

How many bras should we ideally have in our closet?

Ideally, you should have seven. Four for everyday and three for specialty use like working out, date nights, or ones for specific tops and dresses. Ultimately, you want bras that fit your lifestyle, but that still provide the support and lift you need.

When is it time to throw away a bra?

In general, bras last anywhere from 6-9 months. If you’re seeing the fabric get too stretched out, the straps get loose, or the cups lose their shape, those are signs that it’s time to throw the bra out.

Finding the right bra for different events can be tricky, particularly in summer. What are your favorite styles for those tougher outfits?

During the hot months of summer, we recommend Ruby Ribbon’s Original Cami. It has a built-in shelf bra, no underwire, and is made with antimicrobial and moisture-wicking materials. It’s great for under t-shirts that are clinging to you or wear it alone as a tank top. Either way, it smooths and supports you all day.

If you’re dealing with tricky tops or dresses, our Convertible Cami has adjustable straps so it can be made strapless if needed and act as shapewear. If you have any outfits that have a V-neck or a racer-back, our Lace Cami is a great option and also tones the stomach and back areas.

Lastly, if you’re wearing something backless but still need coverage our Posies are reusable adhesive nipple covers for smooth, seamless coverage. They also are made of premium matte silicone that has a smooth & buttery second skin-like finish that does not reflect light through clothes.

lingerie drawer goals, such good closet organization

I’ve been noticing a lot of comfort-focused designs—wire-free bras that are designed to support without any discomfort. On the other hand, both bras with fun and bright colors and neutral colors will be strong this year so customers can have more to choose from. Fabrics with a sheer mesh texture and lace detailing are also gaining a lot of popularity.

A Breezy Blue Dress

In my opinion, you will hardly find anything better than a one-decision outfit. Dresses and jumpsuits simply free up brain space when you’re making a million decisions a day. And that is exactly how I justify the number of dresses currently hanging in my closet. Camille’s dusty blue dress is a favorite around here because it looks like a top and a skirt but in reality, it’s the easiest dress you’ll ever wear.

While I’m not normally one to gravitate toward orange tones, the new season has me feeling inspired and ready to step out in something new. I’ve had this exact pair for 13 years and I have a feeling they’ll be seeing a lot of wear this year.

My favorite type of brunch is indeed a laid-back affair. It’s those sunny mornings when you roll out of bed and throw on a look that you know is going to stick with you all day long. Camille’s t-shirt dress is the most perfect example. Throw on sneakers and a cap and embrace your Sporty Spice era.

Tonal Outfit With White Sneakers and a Colorful Bag

Confession: I saw this whole look on Target (!!) and could not be more obsessed. This is a shirt and pants combo but that shirt could easily double as a denim jacket. The all-blue with a lime green pop?! I will be copying it immediately.

Dress Up a Jumpsuit With Pink Mules

Listen, a denim jumpsuit is a staple no matter what season you’re in. This one is a bit oversized and so easy to dress up or down. Go full-on spring fling with these fun pink mules and pair it with a classic chain necklace for an easy brunch outfit.

Coastal Cowgirl Denim Dress and Mid-Boots

Everyone is talking about the coastal cowgirl trend and I’m thoroughly convinced that she’s this year’s coastal grandma with a southwestern edge. Boots are a wardrobe must this season (have I convinced you yet?). And again, we’re looking to denim, this time in dress form, for a look that’s classically pulled together. Start with brunch, finish with two-step—not a bad way to spend a Saturday.

Casual Baggy Jean Shorts + Polo

This might just be my new weekend uniform. Denim jeans that you can actually move in, plus a nautical polo that’s just begging for a swinging ponytail to bring it all together. Or maybe I’ll swap the polo for a romantic blouse. Either way, pair it with a favorite tote bag for a quick market stop after the mimosas wear off.

Classic High-Waist Jeans and a Tee

Here we arrive at the most versatile pieces that you’ll wear again and again (and through every season): a classic white t-shirt that’s easy to layer, the famed Levi’s jeans that make your butt look like a peach, and a pair of Bottega drop earring dupes that, guaranteed, you’re about to see everywhere—if you aren’t already.

And finally, every brunch needs a girl in a coral jumpsuit. That girl can be you. Bring some color to the table and the fun along with it. You can’t help but feel happy in something as colorful and well-tailored as this beauty.
